I think we'll eventually see a point where technological efficiency and information saturation enable a situation where this kind of chain letter garbage driving social conflict from both sides, totally independent of reality, is the norm. I hope it's in 50 or 60 years rather than 5, but the rapid transformation of the internet over the past 10-15 makes me wonder if that's wishful thinking.

I have no idea what sanely navigating something like that will look like, if it's even possible...

Waking up is probably the number one thing that screws with me during school and the like. My brain doesn't process urgency of events or make any kind of value judgements until almost an hour after I wake up unless I'm very afraid of something happening that day, so more often than not I'm nearly late because all I can think on waking up is "ah, who cares really"...

I wish I knew a solution to that that didn't involve slamming cold brew from bed.

Why shouldn't the solution involve that...?

Valid point...

I hate buying an entire bag just to use it on cold brew, though. I should get some caffeine pills again, maybe. Regardless, I can definitely sympathize with the general idea of sleep being a mess.

Mine got eaten last time, and I'm too lazy to redo the links, but I might as well toss some stuff in.

Currently listening to Biota - Almost Never, which is very difficult to describe. I've heard some of their music called prog, but this is more like some kind of post-rock-y improvisational music -- guitar, accordion, horns, various electronic manipulation... There aren't really any uploads that aren't automatically-generated region-locked garbage on Youtube. Suffice to say it's very, very good stuff. Biota's other albums are nice too -- I've also been listening to Invisible Map, which is a lot poppier.

Also rediscovered Daniel Menche - Vent, which is an album of very purposefully/slowly-moving, austere drone. This is probably the best track -- the sound design is well-done, there's a very clear, intentional structure, and the atmosphere makes me think of some kind of high-ceilinged room of decaying concrete with gray light and rain seeping in.

Other than that, this other Bloodz Boi track got a lot of plays. Bit embarassed to like this sort of music, but there's definitely...something there. Maybe I'll be able to articulate what I mean later.

I've also been listening to a bunch more Main - Hz since getting it in lossless again. Exemplary cold, repetitive guitar drone. Some almost sci-fi tendencies, but not enough for it to feel like some kind of corny theming. Youtube doesn't have it, but if you can find it, try the "terminus" set of tracks.

Lastly, Kayo Dot - Dowsing Anemone With Copper Tongue is on heavy rotation again. It really is my favorite modern prog album I think -- 5:35 onward in __On Limpid Form is exhilarating.

This turned into quite the wall, didn't it? Not a lot of new stuff, but a good few things I'd forgotten, at least...

Edit: Forgot about Black Scorpion. Not a lot to say except that it's nice, spacy early 90s techno.

I enjoy salted caramel, but the thought of something like bacon in sweets just makes me recoil. Candied tamarind is ace too -- I need to find a source of that here.

Ooh, Kayo Dot! I just checked out some songs from them and really loved them and I'm excited to hear an album soon~

Hope you enjoy! If you can tolerate the growling, some of what Toby Driver did in Maudlin of the Well is good too.
Also, guarded recommendation probably, but if you can put up with some of the silly things it does, Coffins on Io is an interesting Kayo Dot release from this decade. Mortality of Doves especially is excellent if you like goth-tinged dreamy-sounding stuff (though the album still has some prog tendencies it's toned down a lot compared to Dowsing Anemone or Coyote or whatever). Tons of good memories of that album and 2AM sencha in the middle of nowhere from a couple years ago...

Addendum since double-posting feels bad: I finally got around to SOPHIE - Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides and love it to death.

Addendum 2: Intersystems' first album is terrifying, wonderful stuff.

And at that time was
Sick of the world and walked out into the mountains
And at that time was
God the maker and at that time was man

Another addendum: Braid - Chandelier Swing has been on repeat for ages tonight -- innocent 90s emo with some very pretty guitar work. Much more jaded than 15 and it still works.

As of late October, lots of Arthur Russell. Calling Out of Context is lovely -- probably his poppiest album. I still like World of Echo better, but it's more my thing than Another Thought is.

It's kind of depressing to think just how many vivid dreams I've forgotten. As for ones I do remember... there was one particularly odd one where I went to an electronics show in China. I don't remember how I got hold of it, but I had some Thinkpad prototype gear with pink glitter all over it. A few kids asked to borrow it, and it disappeared with them. Eventually they came back and prodded me to come with them to go get it -- I went through a side door out of the auditorium with them and down a tunnel with windows on both sides, sort of like the ones you see connecting medical buildings across a road. The tunnel was packed full of old garishly-painted home decor -- stuff with sunflowers all over it, that sort of thing. They started running gradually faster, and gravity seemed to lighten, to the point each step we took was a huge bound, and I noticed we were all chanting "ninety-nine" with each step. I also remember seeing a manmade lake out the window to the right. The last bit is hazy, but we got to a bend in the tunnel, and it opened up to some kind of raised square astroturf/rubber area with flowers painted on the floor. At this point, I realized the kids were all possessed by a clown that had forced them to steal the laptop. The dream ended with me noticing the clown, who charged at me like some kind of video game boss just before I woke up. I think I had started hearing disembodied voices that sounded like they were coming from a subway terminal or something similar before that, though I'm not sure what they were saying.

Sometimes this doesn't feel much easier to attain, honestly...

I guess my ideal would be having this be completely malleable so I can do whatever I feel like based on the situation... Sadly, my body is busy degrading in the usual irreversible ways, so this'll probably never be possible.

Homemade fattoush. It's a levantine salad made with stale bread, a bunch of vegetables, dried mint leaves, lemon, and olive oil.

I massdropped myself a CST L-TRAC (an all-black ambidextrous laser trackball) because I'm extremely irresponsible. I can't resist angular, monochrome, overbuilt computer hardware, I guess.

Have any of you had much success getting -other- people to convert off twitter? Seems extremely difficult IME, even for people who know they hate it.

My interaction with tumblr is a lot more positive -- people just reblog film screenshots, fashion stuff, and music there and I can pick over it at my leisure. Admittedly that's after xkit and a ton of adblock too...

Late fall and winter for sure. 40F or so and extremely foggy is wonderful, I love snow/ice as long as I'm not driving, rain is great... Feels like I can actually relax, I guess. Summer is pure stress and usually results in me being inside 24/7 or going nocturnal. Oh, and spring generally feels...awkward, especially the early parts of it. I strongly dislike February/March -- it's like the world's molting and everything from the past year's coming to an end.

Not sure if this would go better in the "computers" forum, but I'm curious about more than just the technical side of it. I've been running a little Prosody server of my own for a while now, and though it's a little rough in some ways, it's my favorite means of one-on-one communication. Do any of you use it? Run it? What clients and server software do you use?

I don't think I can really listen to music passively enough to do this -- my friend made a mix a while ago that he expressly mentioned was for sleep (probably tongue-in-cheek on some level, but eh). There was way too much to focus on for it to ever work that way for me. I could only do this if I'd been up multiple days first, probably.
