Sorry for necroposting, but I've been looking into the game and there is a lot of stuff that probably is better to explain...? (and compressed stuff that someone else should probably look better into and/or piece together)

First of all, about unused backgrounds... (address CEBF)
Most of them have two variants, for 1P modes and VS. You can't play as boss pokΓ©mon outside stage clear, so three of the elite 4 and the two stage clear bosses are unused. (Those use an unique layout)

($0A, $0B, $08, $06, $0C)
(Also note that Cyndaquil and Magby are only playable, so the Fire VS screen is only used in 2P mode which is unused in VC releases.)

And then the entire Panel de Pon cast has all its stages perfectly working right afterwards

($0E-$1A in order; The cloud, forest and water stages are mostly the same, but have a different background than the used ones)


To a lesser extent, player characters $1A-$30 (CEC0, CEC1, $1A pictured above) are all technically valid but seemingly "blanked out". They all use Chikorita's picture and Seel's ice blocks, share a set of otherwise unused sounds (that sound distinctly from PdP), and use unused palettes (that may as well just be glitched). Everything after that is just invalid, different data.
Also other few bytes are different from ones shared with the rest of characters, but I haven't quite figured the full format of the character data yet. (It's 40 bytes starting at 001011CA(?) for Chikorita)
(do note that playing as characters not normally playable for some reason crashes the game, even if they're just boss characters)


Similarly, along the music indexes there is a large gap of empty values, just like the blanked characters. The gap is large enough to have at least two songs for every panel de pon character, which fits with how the character data is arranged (two separate bytes determining each bgm, even though most used ones share themes).


Anyways I extracted these with xdaniel's tool


The pokemon character portraits and the panel de pon character portraits are compressed in the same way and in the same format.
It's apparently pointed at by the first three bytes for each character... So to get them in-game it'd be a matter of repointing that. I just don't know to where nor how.
(Chikorita's picture is at... 13c000? with this being 00404f)



Other things include a lot of cutscenes and character art from PdP, and uh, what seems to be the layout of a "final" stage...?
???
...which unlike the other ones I don't think is possible to get in-game at all. It doesn't even really resemble any game mode.
It also looks a lot like the (semi)final stage in what would much later be the Game Cube version (which was supposed to be for the N64, I think?), which I guess makes sense with the other unused overworld portrait of Kain.

It does allow for expanded reach and awareness, which is actually good since it does allow for meeting and forming an abstract sense of "diffuse circle" that has in a way less dependency and more focus on self-image... in theory. (In practice it's held together by corporations literally everyone trying to use it hates and a clusterfuck of etiquette directly as a result of atrocious web design, and said websites being intentionally designed to "produce content and traffic" with all that leads to)
But at the same time everything feels closed off. You can't really connect with people you like nor readily actually communicate on its own. Most people I've seen making groups of friends and more solid communities actually talk to each other in other places.


... But what I think is a far more important factor is that we're all living in Real Life Hell and too crushed to actually enjoy anything. And things like Twitter are focused on real life to begin with.


Honestly though, I think they fill different kinds of uses... yet being incomplete in one way or another. I guess in part that makes sense, you use may ways to talk to people... Though it still feels like everything has shifted to prescinding entirely of forms that people try to use on things that don't quite work.
Which ultimately it's obstrusive for less vocal people.

I have a lot of trouble trying to word my thoughts on this, but yes!

It feels like one is not a person, one is a brand of product. People are what amounts to some sort of business interpretation of a person and it's made clear what is it for.
Interaction in these is social capital to generate traffic, reach. You promote your brand, where apparently "people caring about what you say" is a brand.
While simultaneously, it kinda cuts you off communication if you don't play by these rules.

On the other hand I don't want to say much because I rather always feel like it's just that I am missing something and simply isn't for me, since I keep seeing people casually talking seemingly fine.

On forums, by their relatively non-timed nature, one's presence is freer to be constant and you can grow close to people by simply talking with them

More than "playing" though it's "devamping and editing the assets to use them in [pokΓ©mon or whatever]"
particularly since I don't have any idea what is going on and am stuck in some sort of fetch quest (and events randomly not spawning doesn't help)

on the other hand the music is quite good and am kinda upset I can't play through this properly. I'm actually curious about the story, too

I kinda wish emulua stuff was more used, especially along rom hacking.
Probably you could even have easy online multiplayer in pokeymans and other games by faking out game link input with it or something.

Anyways

Generally documenting ram even if it looks functionally useless is a good help- especially if you can get an understanding on how the addresses are actually used and when.

The game itself is important in that some will just take anything and run with it/kind of try to make it right. For instance, in Metroid 1 you can just write anything among the sprites and the game will "try". (So say, implementing Spazer through Lua is just a matter of writting three beams) In others, though, you won't get anything good out of it unless properly called since they like to read from rom frequently, so you can't just arbitrarily spawn things so simply.

Another part you may overlook at first is that the code runs on every drawing frame. This means if some instruction loads a value and reads from it in the same frame it'll be unaffected.

Also in general ui-like stuff is easier than directly affecting the game, since you need to essentially simulate interactions with it and the script for anything elaborate.

It's Hawaii!
There was a ton of speculation about it, which is interesting.

To be honest, I found it underwhelming at first since I expected some sort of surprise and something unusual going on especially with the legendaries.
Only after realizing how small the region looks like I got interested. There's no way the typical game fits in there, right?!
It also looks very open, with only prominently a road from a town to a big city. There's on the other hand several landmarks and roads everywhere.


I'm not feeling much for the actual pokemon... though I do like Kotobirb, and the legendaries look very neat.
... On the other hand, I adore Magearna, which I guess counts?

less favourite but still very good are also Megaman IV and V

and probably a lot of games, i used to play a lot gameboy games, but somehow my memory of them blurs them all that none stand out
maybe it's more that it's full of not so much "favourite" as a lot of "nice little game i like"

an idea i had was an "universal game randomizer"

basically a hacking tool to let people make their own randomizers for different games more easily

you specify the location and data of the tables to randomize, (or make tables yourself) and an easy way to put simple and common conditions (i.e. logic-checking, "don't require x for x")

"why not make a dedicated randomizer" to make it easier. something you just need to feed tables and numbers and occasionally "don't use these numbers here", as opposed to coding an entire thing
