Fedora already has a tool to manage SecureBoot I believe. Linux Mint usually just recommends to leave it disabled, and I honestly cannot be bothered to mess with signing my own keys or dealing with SecureBoot in any way shape or form. As long as motherboards don't require me to use SecureBoot, that's fine by me. I do use UEFI mode though, not Legacy/BIOS.

i have some interest in knowing how i act while high however, knowing how i become when i'm too tired to properly use my brain, being high might either knock me out instantly or create a really really weird RanAS that should probably never be summoned in the first place. one day i might do it only to know what it's like but that's a big if

plus it's also kinda illegal here but it's not like that prevents anyone else

That non-ASCII thing is a huge yikes.

So uh, update since last time. I've installed Windows 11 on my computer on a new cheap SSD drive that I plan on using every once in never, and in order to get the installation going I've had to open the registry and edit a bunch of keys to disable the CPU, SecureBoot and TPM checks. And honestly? It installed and ran just fine. Aside from some graphical oddities/glitches here and there, Windows 11 doesn't seem that bad IMO, but I've also barely used it. It's honestly extremely similar to Windows 10 except with more cool features (copy as path, Windows Terminal, etc.) a more pleasant interface which actually has colors again.

In other news, I've discovered that recent versions of Linux Mint do actually come with SecureBoot support straight from the box, and since my installation was done on UEFI mode then I simply had to add grubx64.efi to the list of Secure Boot keys just like that. I honestly thought my Linux Mint installation was still running on CSM mode, whoops! With that, I took my computer off of "UEFI with CSM" mode and enabled SecureBoot and TPM 2.0 for real.

Now, going back to Windows 11 with all of that enabled, I can see that my PC actually supports almost all the "minimum" requirements except for being a supported CPU. I was wondering, well why do I need a supported CPU if all the safety features that Microsoft has put into Windows 11 don't need it? Well, turns out, they're trying something called HVCI or Memory Integrity (which is also present in Windows 10 for the computers that support it) which seems to be the problem child:

Windows 11 (and also Windows 10!) uses virtualization-based security, or VBS, to isolate parts of system memory from the rest of the system. VBS includes an optional feature called "memory integrity." That's the more user-friendly name for something called Hypervisor-protected code integrity, or HVCI. HVCI can be enabled on any Windows 10 PC that doesn't have driver incompatibility issues, but older computers will incur a significant performance penalty because their processors don't support mode-based execution control, or MBEC.

And that acronym seems to be at the root of Windows 11's CPU support list. If it supports MBEC, generally, it's in. If it doesn't, it's out. MBEC support is only included in relatively new processors, starting with the Kaby Lake and Skylake-X architectures on Intel's side, and the Zen 2 architecture on AMD's side—this matches pretty closely, albeit not exactly, with the Windows 11 processor support lists.

Even a video Microsoft posted in one of their channels clarifies what's going on with these requirements. My CPU is an Intel Core i5-6600, which puts it exactly one generation behind support for MBEC, but two generations behind Microsoft's offical "support list".

Even so, there's a few reports that even with CPUs that support MBEC, Windows 11 still carries a noticeable performance penalty compared to Windows 10. I just wonder if they're gonna make any benchmarks with CPUs that don't support MBEC so that they can measure how important having a supported CPU really is, that'd be neat to see.

Posting this from Windows 11.

EDIT: "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/94.0.4606.81 Safari/537.36 Edg/94.0.992.50" BRUH they didnt even bother changing the nt version it's literally just 10

I use a rice cooker and there are no real considerations to make IIRC, though I have a simple one and I don't know if there might be any regional differences. I have one that's similar to this one:

Only things to mention are the differences using it. You should put more water than you're used to with a normal pan, but aside from that, it should automatically do its thing, just leave it cooking and wait until it finishes automatically. Oh, and also remember to clean the water vapor thing that it has on one of its sides (if it does have it). That thing will get dirty quick, and it should be half-full of water after you use the rice cooker once.

Despite how much I recommended Linux once upon a time I gotta admit I'm sort of between a rock and a hard place for now.

What I wanted out of Linux is an experience that is simple, similar to what I was used to with Windows XP and Windows 7, and that doesn't prevent me from delving deeper into the system in case I want to. And Linux Mint with the Cinnamon DE works very well towards that.

But, there's a few things that cause me pain using Linux:

- Graphics issues: the open-source AMD driver seems to have problems with switching power states, features like suspend are very prone to making the system crash, not to mention the occasional flickering windows that pop up once a day

- Audio issues: you have to hope and pray that PulseAudio works out of the box and that your speakers, headphones and mic are all set, because there's practically no tinkering/workarounds you can use aside from editing its configuration files

- Gaming issues: a few games that are noticeably more taxing on Linux, making it so that I have to play them on Windows if I want a smoother experience - even emulators too, Dolphin stutters in Linux but runs fine on Windows despite using OpenGL for both. Steam also seems to sometimes get stuck doing...something to the games, where I literally have to kill its process for it to get on with it. I think it may be related to some validation or shader pre-caching thing? whatever it is, it doesn't tell me and it's weird

The hard part now is that, with Linux I feel like I'm in control of my operating system, I can control what it's doing, what I want it to do, everything. But on Windows, well, you have control over it sure but it also really likes to decide things for you, and it tries to get in the way to make sure you don't do things in a way Microsoft did not intend you to do. It's just not the same as it used to be, maybe competition with the macOS is making them adopt these weird changes. Another thing is that I still believe that Windows is made to break after a few years, forcing you to reinstall it or, in the case of most people who don't know how to reinstall Windows, buy a new computer. Planned obsolescence at its finest. You don't get that on Linux.

Even this quote from a funny video, I feel like it now applies to Windows more-so than ever, not just to Macs:

Using a Mac is a little different than using a PC, it's not so much operating a computer as it is sort of tricking it, fooling it into doing what it is you want it to do, you kinda have to sneak up on a Mac. I don't feel like I'm operating the Mac as much as I'm just there sharing the Mac experience, and if I can do something useful while the Mac is willing, so much the better.

Installing 7-Zip on Windows 11 only to find out that once I right-click, I have to click "Show More Options" every goddamn time I want to simply extract or compress a file is frustrating. But aside from that, Windows 11 ran very well every time I booted it up, it's even updating properly. What I need to do (I think) is use ONLY Windows 11 for about a week (I have it on a different SSD for dual-booting) or a month and see how that goes. If I cannot replicate any of the video and audio issues, then that's gonna leave me fairly disappointed with Linux.

For my work laptop I have no reason to switch to Windows 11, at most I need to set up a virtual machine in there whenever I may need to use a program that just isn't gonna work on Linux. This idea will not work for my desktop because, well, if I'm already having performance issues while gaming as it is then using a virtual machine will help me none. If I did a GPU pass-through to the VM, I might be able to get it up to speed, but I only have one graphics card attached to this PC, and this is definitely not the time to be buying another one. Not to mention, this motherboard doesn't even have an extra slot for one anyway, so that wouldn't do me much good either.

I guess I could try having the GPU pass-through to my dedicated graphics card and leave Linux with the internal graphics while I have the VM open but I'm not sure how that would even work.

my current laptop has no stickers. i may put some on it at a later moment

if any of you do/like web dev i recommend the following:
2B or not 2B that is the question
Developer Merge Conflict Sticker
CSS Is Awesome Sticker

my previous laptop which was actually borrowed from work (and thus didn't belong to me) had a ton of stickers but most of them were corporate-related and i never took a photo of the stickers themselves, the closest image i have is this one. i put up another image showing which ones are hidden from this angle

Posted on 01-22-22 03:48:04 PM, in rest in piss 2021 Link
In 2021 I accomplished...not much really. A lot of my projects are still stagnated, burnout was high, stress was high, motivation was low and so was my attention span.

However, one noticeable thing that happened is that I grew closer to a couple of people who I can now trust as extremely close friends and I have made plans to visit them soon. They have helped me in many ways throughout 2021. I was feeling like I was wandering pointlessly through life, and now thanks to them I feel like I have a path I want to follow, unfortunately having something to work towards is now giving me a lot of anxiety I don't know how to handle. And even more unfortunate, is that this year is going to be complicated in terms of finances and managing time, but I went back to living with my father so that we can help each other for the time being, again. Work is currently stable, and college has been a disaster. Oh and I'm living in an apartment now. There's 3 bedrooms, but only 2 people living here.

That said, the current financial situation is barely sustainable and I already told him that if neither of us are able to improve our earnings by July then we'll have to move yet again. Otherwise, we're going to be stuck with earning barely enough money to pass by each month, and that is a dicey situation to be in, specially when I have plans to visit a foreign country (which will be...extremely expensive).

And as far as the world went in 2021...

...

There was some flooding not too far from here like 2 days ago, the power went out several times in the past 3-4 days and I'm pretty sure I heard at least 4 power transformers either blowing up or disarming.

There were strong thunderstorms that made looking outside the windows pretty much impossible as it was like a heavy fog had taken over the place, and I could see brightness from lightning strike every 1-2 seconds for at least 1 hour each day.

Summer storms! Have some ambient thunder/lightning, and sorry for the low quality, I recorded this using the laptop microphone:

Ambient minutes of audio from my laptop's mic:

Specific clips from my computer mic:

Aside from that it's been way too warm for my liking.

Forums create a record, an archive we can search through, so that whenever we want to revisit issues, or find help with a problem, or see what was happening during a certain time, we can do that. There’s a paper trail, and while sometimes that leads to embarrassing takes on tv shows and game reveals, other times it’s providing an enormous help with technical issues or parts of a game you’re stuck on.

Discord simply can’t provide that. It’s a river running in real-time, and while it does have search functions, the way the whole app is structured means you’re simply never going to get the same levels of detailed discussion or archived information as we can get from forums. If places want to open a Discord and run that as something else, then cool, but using it as a replacement for forums is a disaster.

Forums are mostly dying, sure, but I think this also opens the way for the remaining forums to become more focused. Talking and reading posts in here feels different than really anywhere else, even other forums. I don't know how to explain it.

I couldn't be assed to take better pictures so:

It's a Lenovo Ideapad 330 (15IKB). I bought it from a relative for a cheaper price than buying it new. The only major issue is that the letter Q doesn't work, but every time you press a key on the upper row, then it types in the letter you want followed by a metric ton of Qs. I fixed it by installing Linux and doing some tinkering with xmodmap to remap the Q key to nothing, and remap AltGr+0 to Q.

I bought it so I could use it when I need to take a laptop to work (despite us still working remotely for now). Since I'll just be using it for web development and youtube videos at the most, it'll work well.

Specs:
- Intel Core i3-7020U
- 4GB RAM (upgradable to 16GB, which I'll do later)
- Intel Graphics 620
- 240GB SSD*

It currently has the replacement WD Green that I received after the previous one self-destructed (I should eventually put a different SSD in there, that said this laptop will not be used that frequently so I can wait a couple of months and it should be fine). There's a spare HDD that I'll be attaching to this laptop soon™. I need to set up a Windows 10/11 VM in it too.

I'd say if you spent under 400 bucks you did well. They're fairly modular and do pretty well for a general use laptop.

Oh, nice! I got it for $275 ( R$ 5.50 = $1, current exchange rate ), though I could have bargained for $220 but I didn't feel like it + wanted to help them too by paying "full" price.

Gotta say, that's nice to hear, because I happen to also have a Lenovo phone (Vibe K5) and this thing is almost worthless LOL. Though honestly I've had it for a long time now, it's still running Android 5, but damn how I have been disappointed by it through the years. I have been a little worried about how good this Lenovo laptop would end up being.

Technically my current computer is fully custom built though there never really was a moment where I built all of it at once. Instead I had a pre-built PC that I gradually replaced everything in it part by part, until eventually I had an entire brand new computer, meanwhile the old computer itself was "re-assembled" as my dad's PC.

The current Aquamarine (MK.II):

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H110M-S2V (mini-ITX)
CPU: Intel Core i5-6600
RAM: 8GB DDR4 (x2 - total: 16GB)
GFX: Sapphire NITRO AMD RX 470 4GB
PSU: EVGA 650GQ

HDD: 1TB WD10EZEX (Western Digital Blue)
SSD: 500GB Samsung EVO 870

Case: PCyes Dwarf (blue)

The last upgrade to this computer was the SSD to replace the dead WD Green, aside from that I remember buying the graphics card in early 2020 right after I saw the Linus Tech Tips video about potential supply shortages. Well, it was a wise decision, but I never would've expected things to be THIS bad, specially 2 years later!

both my dad and grandmother take them to treat "depression" (which i think may actually be misdiagnosed borderline personality disorder but they don't have access to psychiatrists right now who would do much except keep prescribing them the medication they currently have)

they're the only medication boxes i've seen that come with a black label on them saying "this medication can cause dependence"

Posted on 03-30-22 09:48:00 PM, in (plurality) brains are weird how do they work Link
it's been a while since the last post

my brain is a mess i don't know how to explain

it's clear something is not right but i haven't yet reached a conclusion

while previously i thought that core me was mute i've realized he isn't mute, it's just that i left him mute for a long time after i introduced the "main me" to try and "fix" him. in actuality, core me is extremely emotionally sensitive, paranoid and has a lot of traits that make him complicated to deal with, yet he's very emotive and can be genuinely extremely happy in ways i didn't think were possible for a long long time. so i created a translation layer in my brain that filters some things, re-writes others, tries to repress some stuff, and does a lot of mumbo jumbo to try and ease communication, to make sense of myself and prevent more damage.

now the translation layer and the core, they co-habit depending on the situation.

i can't call myself plural but there is...something going on. i'm not sure it's a mindset i should lean into, i'm not sure if the end result will be positive or negative or neutral. for now i'm just waiting to see more potential answers in the future

My bland website is here: https://randev.xyz/

I haven't updated it in a while.

I didn't pick the current style/colors because it's pretty, I picked them because I was lazy and this is readable enough.

I want to eventually have a retro layout on the site but blarg if I have energy to implement one now of all times.
