One of my friends has a tablet PC. He doesn't draw much. Cue envy.

In all honesty, I could do even with a regular tablet... It'd probably give me the kick in the pants I need to start drawing again. It's a pity they're all but unavailable in Puerto Rico, and I don't exactly have any method of online payment

Jul's Second Law:

The average activity during a spree can be modeled by the logistic differential equation

dp/dt = J1p - kp2

where p= total number of posts, k is a constant determined by extrapolating the activity of previous daily sprees, and J1 is a constant derived from the application of Jul's First Law (see start of thread). The constant Pav*=k/J1 is therefore the limiting case of the spree- as t approaches infinity, average daily activity will approach the line p = Pav* without crossing under.

Society for the Human Improvement of Nations (SHION)
Chapter AU-04

Base of Operations: Daleth-04 (#0, center, gray)

Population:

632,078 active military, divided into 617,907 regular infantry, 7,861 artificially-engineered clones, 4,144 augments, 1,637 elemental Benders and 529 Aleph. 98,761 reserve military, divided into 94,260 regular infantry, 3,172 artificially-engineered clones, 724 augments, 489 elemental Benders and 116 Aleph. 26,201 civilian crew member, divided into 13,768 operators and maintenance staff, 3,818 medics, 2,118 engineers and 6,497 researchers. Total population: 742,869.

Economy: Non-existent. Being a purely militant city-state, the SHION takes whatever resources they need from any neighboring countries- by force, if necessary, though they do have a policy of establishing trade agreements with willing nations, offering weapons and valuable research in return.

Mission statement:

"The Society for the Human Improvement of Nations (SHION), an established PMC and autonomous city-state, exists for the purpose of achieving utopia through the rapid advancement of the natural sciences, applied to the context of an ever-globalizing and modernized civilization. By unifying all nations under a single, stable centralized government, we hope to eliminate the barriers that impede humanity's progress towards a new age of peace and prosperity.

But to do so, we require absolute cooperation from every man, woman and child on this planet to reform the current geopolitical model of divided regions and closed borders that serves only to distance ourselves from our fellow men and further the resentment between your brethren. It is therefore that the Society for the Human Improvement of Nations humbly requests all the world's leaders to sign a treaty of unconditional surrender and swear absolute loyalty to our postulates, so that we may all walk together on the path towards a better future. Should you refuse, the SHION is prepared to resort to military force in order to help you understand our vision.

You have 30 days to respond. I wish you all a good day."

-Dr. Alistair Stiles
Grand Provost of the Society for the Human Improvement of Nations

Unnamed river below the DAF Military High Command
05:53
--------------------------------------------------------------

"Ahhh!" Astrid raised her head above the surface with a splash. This was certainly not her idea of a refreshing dip. The water's temperature was so low it's a wonder the whole river hadn't completely frozen yet. Her shadow-morphing powers wouldn't work on deep water due to the difference in the refractive index, so she'd have to swim her way to shore quickly before hypothermia settled in.

As she breast-stroked her way to the nearest rock, she heard the low, buzzing whirr of a motor engine skimming across the surface. Astrid turned her head around to try and see where the noise was coming from. Had Yaolin and the DAF soldiers tracked her position already? Her first instinct was to try and hide behind one of the many rocks that dotted the riverbed, but she changed her mind when she saw the markings on that hoverboat.

"...Oh, thank God. I was just about to freeze to death out here," She waved her right arm as a signal to the SHION spotters. "Over here!" she yelled, taking care to do so low enough so as to not draw any attention from above.

"Hey, it's the commander! Quick, someone grab a rope!" One of the soldiers on deck passed a 50-foot metal rope and threw it overboard for Astrid to grab onto.

"Thanks for the save, men." She held on tightly with both her arms and legs, shivering all over while the reconnaisance hoverboat pulled her out of the brink. As soon as she was on board, another soldier came and wrapped an emergency blanket around her. "What's the situation, Captain?"

"The Kazemagerou are secured and currently en route to Santa Clarisa via splash-landing. Orders are to get back to HQ before the Chinese arrive. After debriefing, you've been ordered to report directly to Yggdrasil. Don't know what it's about, Major, but I hope they at least give you a commendation for today's success."

From the safety of his reinforced bunker control room, Alistair was aware of any troop movements from all nations. Thanks to his SHA-3984 "Panoptes" satellite which currently sits in geosynchronous orbit 320,000 kilometers above the planet, he could see every movement on the surface as small as a fly landing on a single blade of grass. Hence, when the Peacemakers were fired, he was anything but surprised, having already thought of every possible counter-measure to intercept their course and prevent impact. Turning his chair towards the monitor focused on the coast of Mahoukyo, Alistair let out a sigh of disappointment.

"Sigh... Why is it that they always want to solve things the hard way, Luce?" he asked to the female officer dressed in white standing beside him. "AURIOS, prepare the WASPs for intercept. Issue a general alert to the whole complex and order all active units to stand by."

Two rows of blast shields on the eastern side of Daleth-04 opened to launch a massive barrage of small MIRV-like missiles to intercept the Peacemakers in mid-flight and stop them from hitting the base.

"Open a channel to Mahoukyo and the Remilan estate. I want to personally give them a message."

A microphone appeared from the ceiling above the console Alistair was currently sitting at.

"Citizens of Mahoukyo, lend me your ears and listen! My name is Dr. Alistair Stiles, Grand Provost of the Society for the Human Improvement of Nations. It is with my deepest regret that I must inform you that your beloved 'leaders', house Remilan, have single-handedly refused to acknowledge our glorious mission and launched a pre-emptive attack against our base of operations. Therefore, as of this moment, the Society for the Human Improvement of Nations has decided to issue a declaration of war against the nation of Mahoukyo. Again, should you decide to surrender unconditionally and forfeit all of your primary resources to our cause, we will immediately repeal the declaration and proceed to welcome you with open arms. People of Mahoukyo, ask yourselves this: Would you stand still and wait for your inevitable destruction as your leaders pursue a lost cause, or take your destiny and future into your own hands? The choice is yours..."

Eight hours after the initial declaration of war against Mahoukyo, Alistair convened an emergency meeting with his joint chiefs of staff, the Aesir Council. These 12 generals, many of them veterans from the Zhi'Mar campaign, serve as the ruling elite of the SHION military structure. Every major specialty is represented here- tactical warfare operations, logistics, and communications to advanced medical research and engineering. These fearsome men and women are the ones responsible for maintaining their war machine well oiled and ready for battle.

As soon as everyone was seated, Alistair took the stand, adjusting his microphone before calling to order.

"As you all know, I've called you here tonight to discuss some pressing issues. Now that Mahoukyo has openly declared their hostility towards our goals, we must decide how to deal with them swiftly and efficiently without raising any suspicions."

One of them, a black-haired and purple-eyed female officer, raised her hand in protest.

"And we can't simply order a full-scale invasion... why, exactly? Or better yet, why not nuke them off the map entirely with the--"

Alistair was quick to express his disapproval at the idea. "That's exactly what we're trying to avoid, miss Dorin. And personally, I'd like to provoke as little international scandal as possible."

"I suggest we have our fleets and air troops form a perimeter around 300 miles off the coast of Mahoukyo. Close enough to place them in weapons range, but far enough into international waters that they'd risk breaking one or more treaties by attacking us head-on. And if, by any chance, they were reckless enough to try it, the Scinfaxi and Hrimfaxi will make sure to give them a pleasant surprise."

"Excellent suggestion, General Rodin. I trust you'll have your troops ready to move out at a moment's notice?"

"Yes, my Lord."

"Excellent. Now then, let's move on to other matters, shall we..."

The hull of Daleth-04 shook all over as wave after wave of airship squadrons and naval forces deployed from all sides, headed straight for Mahoukyo. As they were not yet given the order to attack, most of them spread out and stood their position, semi-surrounding the whole coastline and effectively blockading their commercial and supply lines. Meanwhile, a pair of massive nuclear-powered submarines secretly made their way under the battlefield...

Anya: It's a stress outlet. College math can be rather traumatizing at times, especially Calculus 2 and above. Those were the first courses I've ever scored less than 90 on, so naturally I still rage over it. So to compensate, I take it out on you guys by torturing you with difficult, dense analysis.

And because I love you all so much, here, have some complex integrals:

I beg your pardon?

(Note that- a. This isn't actually part of a midterm, but a quiz, which makes it worse, and b. This isn't even calculus, it's Differential Equations with an incredibly show-offy professor that loves solving things using complex analysis, which is material belonging to another course entirely.)

Nines: Re() is associative, so I'm actually taking the real part of the entire thing, not just k-iw, and expanding them at the end so I could just cross out the i-terms. Much easier that way.

This is actually how my ODEs professor decided to solve a particular example of an oscillatory version of Newton's Law of Cooling, instead of using integration by parts twice. Granted, it's cleaner- but the guy really threw us for a loop since complex analysis isn't taught until the higher-level courses (which only math majors are required to take, and I'm not one of them ).

Honestly, I'm half-expecting him to pull stuff like this out of his ass somewhere down the road.
