As far as I know, OTVDM is just the older name for WineVDM.

For the compatibility checker extravaganza, now you've just got to wait for the "Mandatory Update" for Windows 10/others coming with gw11.exe to suddenly report that the machine "can be upgraded" now. Of course, removing gw11 should be impossible/extremely unintuitive and horribly break the Windows install if you just go and delete it through a live CD.

Neither do I. I can only imagine how it was like to manually remove gwx on god-knows-how-many machines.

Also, I found out the hard way by breaking an install on my desktop PC running Windows 7. It would just boot to the recovery partition and consistently fail to repair anything, requiring me to use the restore CD.

(while the Windows 7 laptop I'm typing this on never got the "update" to begin with)


I didn't really care that much though, since I had HBCD so nothing was lost.
It wasn't a repeat of 2008, where there was a failed attempt at removing Norton Antivirus from a 2004 XP machine, and the restore CD by Packard Bell for some reason did *not* offer any way to preserve the contents of the C: drive, and so a bunch of data was lost.

Even the later restore CD from 2011 (the one used for Windows 7) did not offer any way to recover the C: drive either. Thanks there!

I guess Speedy Eggbert (2) counts in the list, if only because you can easily edit every level in the game, the recorded demos, graphics and sound.

Eventually they're releasing the source code for this game too, which should have already happened in 2019 but it isn't ready yet.

At the end, I got a SONY MDR-XB550AP to replace the aforemented cheapo headphones that disintegrated over time.

It definitely does a better job at filtering outside noise out.

I've never used it myself, but I dislike the Apple hardware for several decisions that Louis Rossmann has explained and I'm not going over.
The one which I very much dislike in particular due to having done this when the old XP machine died is:
Want to take out the hard drive and save your data? Lol no fuck you.

The software is seemingly nice but again, I never used it myself, probably never will, and it's a subjective matter anyway.

I've been used to Windows 7 SP1 for the past 10 years and I'm still using it, though I'll switch* to 10 Pro when I get the new desktop computer. This 7 laptop is absolutely not powerful enough for 10 so there's no point in upgrading it unless I wanted to hate myself.
*chances are, I'll try to dual boot it with 7 to get around certain annoyances

For me it definitely has to be something from the world of unlicensed games, but there's so much to choose from.

So I will choose this obscure one.

Aladdin II

Extremely bad conversion of the MD Aladdin game which you should never play for any reason, otherwise you will break your controller.
Before JonTron popularized The Lion King 5 with the three characters committing suicide in the game over screen (still very notorious before that), and Joel popularizing MD Felix the Cat with HET (also notorious back before that, when these games were initially dumped some years before), there was this, still obscure at the time, quality game.

It just has it all:
  • Ridiculous graphics. Badly drawn would be the understatement of the century:
  • The controls have to be seen to be believed. Jumping is ridiculously choppy and bugged (some of the worst I've ever seen in any video game), can get you stuck on solid ground and makes precision platforming impossible. Moving while jumping in the air only works whenever the game feels like! The controls are also delayed and if you swinging the sword while moving you can't stop until a few seconds later, which makes sword combat several times more annoying that it has any right to be, jumping on/from ropes is broken, precision jumping between platforms is impossible but the game requires you to do it anyway, and the list goes on and on...
  • Collision detection with platforms and pickups is just a suggestion. At several points the player character will visibly fall through solid ground, with the aforemented issues with jumping not doing any favours. At some points in the game when you have to jump on small platforms, you have to jump *while visibly standing in mid-air, after walking off the platform*, otherwise you will not reach the other side without falling off (or rather, you will visibly fall through the other platform, even when it looks you should be able to reach it).
  • Of course, collision detection against enemies is the opposite of generous, and good luck reflecting the swords. You might as well ignore them than trying to fight them (and lose several HP in the process)
  • To top it all off, the beepy music which is mostly a given for these games.
By the way, they also managed to mess up the health indicator! It only updates every certain amount of hits, and that certain amount is "a lot", as you can see in the linked video.



Overall, -1/10. It's like they tried (and spectacularly failed) to recreate the game off a bad telephone line.

7-zip not working under NT 3.51 is weird.

I've used 7-Zip 9.20's File Manager under NT 3.51 with no problems, though you do need some updated DLLs.
The required DLLs either came with Office 97, or were part of this DLL pack.

Dependency Walker is really your friend when it comes to finding if something runs on NT 3.51 (more or less).

Though there's surprisingly a lot more stuff that runs if you install the proper DLLs from 95/98/IE4 update CABs.
I've seen first-hand the following working:
- regsvr32.exe (important for registering extra DLLs)
- "Advanced INF Setup" (IIRC advpack.dll). Once that works, you can even install ImDisk through the batch/.inf file.
- VBScript (cscript.exe/wscript.exe). Yes.
- regedit.exe from 95 (once patched, but unstable)
- IExpress
- and so much more

well, related a bit to things, I don't have any real reference art of my common characters.
there have been some attempts, but I repeatedly fail to follow them and just tend to go off by memory -- which is partially the reason behind art changes. :V

there have been some legit changes during this time though. now I can more or less reliably draw in the chibi Bubble Bobble style, so the generic boy/girl characters tend to get drawn that way now.

also, I keep repeating this occasionally but I really should make a page with all of the art/characters I've drawn since the beginning (almost 10 years ago in 2011, wewlad). though that would take a ridiculous amount of time, and it that would mean fighting against the scanner's USB Cable on this laptop, which is extremely infuriating.
