Today I did some spring cleaning on the hard drive. There were only 4GB free out of 250 so I had to delete some unnecessary stuff.

One of the most bizzare things I found was an half-broken testdisk backup of... some partition. It included files from the malware collection, which I've never stored directly on the laptop since it'd take up too much space, so it was probably from an external hard drive.

The backup itself was useless and took around 2.7GB of space. You'd have things marked as ".reg" files being 30MB large and not actually containing text, alongside plenty other of broken files. Of course, I deleted all of that.

Oh man I never posted in this thread, keep in mind this is also under the perspective of someone using a laptop from 2011 with a screen resolution being the grand total of 1366x768.

When you have a reasonably spec'd machine 10 is... alright. It's still Windows so it will still run the programs you need. That, and the work laptop runs 10 so I'm more used to it.
With the exception of a few neat things (like the improved tiling features, though they also annoy me at times, or better high dpi support), I still prefer the aesthetics of Windows 7, the colorful icon style (designers are getting real lazy these days), the "non-flatshit" Classic Theme, and not having everything with ridiculous gigantic padding.

Granted, the latter two aren't as terrible with high dpi monitors but at least have an option for configuring them without having to resort to hacks which may or may not break on the next update. Customization options? In 2021? Ha ha no.

The 10 Start menu is a big bulky mess with giant tiles and advertisements. You can slim it down, but even then you're not getting things like quick convenient links to places like Downloads on a nice ordered list.

Also, give back menu bars on non-tablet devices. There should be no reason to use the hamburger menu Chrome popularized (for some reason) when using a mouse, but thay may be too much to ask for.

On the other hand, the Vista/7 Control Panel is terrible mess of pages where you have to navigate through a maze to find what you need unless you explicitly search for it, but even then it doesn't help at times. The new control panel on 10 is in theory better since most of everything is one single layer of nesting... it's unfortunate that it's incomplete, requires DWM because UWP, and like other UWP apps its graphic design is something I very much disagree on.

About to get that new desktop PC... for my parents, that is. There's some discount when buying computers through work so why not.

This also means I get to inherit the PC which is getting replaced, which is running Windows 7 and has a failing hard drive (with everything being copied elsewhere already of course) so it will be fun for experiments.

I still have to decide about the actual new desktop for myself, to replace the 2011 laptop I'm currently writing this post on.

5 years later, having the previous layout with a big fat "PHOTOBUCKET" watermark still gets me (and makes me mad too, so many old images ruined).
I then switched to imgur, but because images there apparently fail to be saved by the wayback machine due to the referer check imgur does, I'll be using kak.bplaced.net to store them, which is something I originally didn't really want to do (because free host etc etc).

edit: lol no I'm not storing them on bplaced anymore as it's even worse, between HTTP-only images not showing under HTTPS, and the wayback machine not saving them either. Should have checked before-hand I guess.

that said, and previous 2013-era cringeposts aside, I figured I'd try drawing a new avatar, which is something I've been putting off for quite a while. Done on XP's mspaint with a mouse, because of course I would.

This resulted in the quest for the new avatar, with these pictures being in chronological order. Mouse-hover the images for more info:

Since I happened to save multiple versions of the avatar in various states of completion, I figured I'd do the avatar mousehover trick, switching between the 100x100 and 200x200 versions.

it works well, though I had to touch up a bit the smaller avatar on the right side to make it more in-line with the larger avatar.

originally, I had done the hover replacement in a certain weird way, which worked, but had certain annoying drawbacks like the avatar being completely blank for previous posts... so I then looked at how Joe did it.

same base idea of replacing the background on hover, but definitely simpler execution (set image width to 0, and add padding so the otherwise obscured background becomes visible), so I lifted that and adapted it got inspired by what he did. the more you know I guess :V

I was 3 when the original board opened.

I originally came here in late 2013 through tcrf.net, so quite a bit late to the party, and I originally intended to mostly/only post in the tcrf section of the forum.
This quickly ended up not being the case, though I was kind of immature at the time. Through here and other places like Kafuka I'd say I improved on that part.

The whole story of how I got here is a fun one itself:
- Getting interested in videos of debug glitches of Sonic 3 & Knuckles mostly by Sonic8000 (sometime in early 2009 IIRC -- around the same time I also discovered danooct1)
- Moving some time later from "Debug glitches" to "Actual glitches", and coming across GoldS' legendary Sonic 3 & Knuckles Glitches and Oversights videos. At the time, the LRZ1+Megaglitch video was the latest one he made. This is what caught my interest in that channel.
- In 2010, GoldS made a video about unused content in Kirby's Adventure, which pointed to "wiki.rustedlogic.net". This is how I discovered tcrf.
- Tcrf has a link to a "Message board" (here), though I wouldn't join until Sep 2013.


also, kind of curious/ironic that, considering how late I came here, I'd eventually end up doing this and this. heh

You can also add blogs to the list of commonly used software.

Considering these details:
  • The classic registration trick for getting rid of dumb bots
  • The forum software not being commonly used
  • Jul not being indexed by Google (probably doesn't matter)
I'd wager this was some normal spammer doing manually what they do best*: spamming.

I double checked here with Firefox and Chrome, *both* in http and https. And it just works every time with no problems.

Does the mouse-hover effect on Joe's avatar fail to work on you too, since it's almost the same?

because I live relatively far from big cities, we'd only get a few trains every few hours or so.
what this means: I have to get to work by 9AM, so with trains I had to wake up at 6AM to catch the only available train at 6:45AM. miss it and you're boned.

nowadays I can just wake up slightly before 9AM for obvious reasons

nice things never last enough, and that includes low temperatures apparently.

again, the temperatures here are already mildly annoying when they get to 85-90°F,
so I can't even imagine how fun it must be to work when the temperature is in the very low numbers of 100°F or even 120°F.

I also seem to recall that, somewhere, it was mentioned how with all of the anti-spam measures in-place out there, most of the forum/blog spam is done manually now.

I don't remember exactly where this was actually said though -- it's been a few years.

okay, I tested this with Chromium, which does not have this problem. but someone else verified what happens with the original Chrome.

it turns out that, indeed, the problem is related to Chrome outright blocking http-only content (bplaced.net) on an https webpage.

and bplaced.net does not offer HTTPS to me. fuck.

NTVDMx64/WineVDM wins again.


I would be trying 11 and various customization/fun tools (OpenShell, deskn.cpl, WineVDM, old malware, etc...) inside a VM as well if I had a more powerful computer.
