Pokemon Gold Korean Save file

Maybe it wouldn't work as proof the Bill event never happened. But due to the 24-hour waiting period in the other versions, it might be detectable if (I assume) the Time Machine remains unavailable.

The Kanto-only Pokemon probably would remain unobtainable, though at least the Kanto starter line should still be visible as I believe they're all used at some point by other trainers. I think the fossils might have all been used at some point too.

Sounds like it would make about as much sense as YUUKICHAN'S PAPA (though I forgot what their real name is but that person's a female, right? Despite what the name would suggest.)

I don't know why they would play in any more color on SGB2 than a SGB1, the only difference between the two versions of the SGB is a link port (and supposedly there's like a 2% speed difference because of a bug in SGB1).
Seems like a ***ton of work just for a needlessly version-exclusive bonus.
(supposedly Tetris DX has a SGB2-exclusive border for whatever reason)

The Famicom version does have Continues. They just made you enter a stupid code every time to use it.
(though the NES version made it a menu option, they still put the cursor on Start by default. All the more rage-inducing the one time you forget to scroll down.)

there was even a cameo appearance by a character from Street Fighter II, although we won't reveal who she is just yet

So many possibilities.

Posted on 02-06-17 04:34:13 AM, in RARE.Ltd's expanded PAL resolution of NES games, add to the site? (last edited by KingMike at 02-06-17 04:35:36 AM) Link
I didn't check but it's true that NES can display 256x240, but it seems NTSC games were usually if not always designed to assume at least the top and bottom 8 lines would never be seen due to overscan (giving effectively 256x224).

So that is the question: did Rare do anything useful with the increased (presumed) visible space?

To clarify, the NES used different television formats between NTSC (Americas, Japan) and PAL (Europe).

NTSC is 60 frames per second, and has a resolution of (about) 256 × 224.
PAL is 50 frames per second, and has a resolution of (about) 256 × 240 &emdash; 8 pixels taller in each direction.

On a CRT, there will be overscan and NTSC will show 224 or less, but I know using a video capture device (without TV tuning) it can show 240 lines, probably so on an HDTV (though I've only really tried that once, as people who have tried an NES on HD will be immediately scared by the shitty quality of upscaled composite).
I can recall playing Galaxy Odyssey (FDS) and being able to see the hidden "0" sprite in the top corner of the screen (I assume the game is using Sprite 0 Hit for timing effects.) (in addition to the normal HUD display of a life meter and Oxygen count at the top of the screen)

I think the device I used was a Dazzle Video Recorder like a decade ago to record playing Dragon Scroll for the Famicom on a front-loader NES with the official NES-JOINT-1 converter.
I can find my video of it if you like, it's a good example of a game that was designed to assume overscan was present.
(I had to hack the whole window drawing just to extend the text window like 2 tiles without the game freaking out thanks to inefficient coding, possibly pushing the timing limit of Vblank.)

Not sure if it's the sort of thing worth noting...
looking again at Momotaro Densetsu Gaiden for the Famicom, and I notice the script dump has leftover strings for the PCE version's BRAM (File Cabinet, I think it was also called?) stuff.
(I believe the game originated on Game Boy, then was ported to PCE, and then perhaps the Famicom version was ported from the PCE, or at least used the same script? I haven't checked.)

I can't recall if I asked before, but what is the opinion on pre-release screenshots?
I mean, like the Final Fantasy Adventure manual (at least the Sunsoft release, which I have. But I feel like Sunsoft just took the original packaging and replace Square's name) I know has a few pre-release localizations.
I recall the first gameplay line was longer, and Dark Lord being called Darknight (I think the former was the final name).

I remember an old VHS tape I had with a sample copy of Shadow of the Ninja on it, and I'm quite positive it used to have some in-game debug features on it. I could never figure out as a kid how they went from 1-1 to 5-2 and beat the game, but I'm certain there had to be some little debug quirks in it! It even had "SAMPLE" in it!

I'm going to see if I can get the footage back from my pal.

BUT ANYWAY...I wonder if these are still in there, but disabled. I'm pretty sure infinite health and a stage skip are possible ones.

(I'm also gonna see if I can't get the VHS rips again and actually make sure the backups are in safer keeping this time. )

I think it was in January 1991 GamePro announced a giveaway of 10 copies of Shadow of the Ninja with a password feature.
Seems like a strange thing to add for such an extremely limited edition.
Unless come to think of it, is it possible by "password" they could've just sent out 10 copies of the game along with a printout of the level-select code?

This is something that could use confirmation.

I suppose it would depend on whether the games do left or right shift to move buttons from MMIO to RAM. I think I've seen both (shifting the bits the opposite direction would result in B = 2)
(but probably not like the first NES programming tutorial I ever read that stored every button in a separate byte )

If Bock has dumped it, it's probably a safe guess he'll release it in time. I don't think there's a need to pester him.

I wonder when that happened.
At least in the US, putting cigarette brands in a video game might've run afoul of cigarette advertising laws (banned from TV since the '70s, don't know if a video game would still count as "TV").
Considering the Final Fantasy series had a stinky plant that was blatantly a parody of that company, and they used a variety of knockoff names for it.

From what I understand, the Marlboro logo was pretty commonly used on Japanese racing game cover arts in the '80s, even Nintendo did that on the Famicom F-1 Race box. (due to the popularity of a particular sponsored driver? Was it Ayrton Senna, the same guy Sega got to endorse their Monaco GP games? That might explain things.)

I think if they recall a game, it would have to be a REAL serious issue.

I know Howard Philips has responded to the rumor Nintendo destroyed most copies of Stadium Events by saying that doesn't sound very economical? realistic?. Something along those lines.

Something along the lines of the WTC version of Spiderman... uh, 2, was? for the PS1? That was scheduled to release like a week after 9/11 but had to be recalled to print a less timing-sensitive version. That is how extreme a situation a recall would have to be.
