I'm interested in playing, I stopped playing on the server back when Splatoon came out but I still have plenty of projects to work on (finishing the squid farm, finishing the iron farm, helping with MM200's animal farms, finding a good place for - then building - an actual home...) but I don't know if there are enough people for it to be worth putting it back online.

There's been entire big updates since the server went down, I don't think they majorly changed terrain generation (at least on the surface) but we'd have plenty of new stuff to try out.

Been playing a lot of Monster Hunter Generations! Game came out two weeks ago and I've been playing non-stop, basically pulled me away from Fire Emblem Fates (which I was playing non-stop since that came out, haha). Almost done the offline solo stuff and I'm in a few groups of people that play online so it's been pretty fun. Been challenging myself to use only the Hunting Horn, too.

Also, if you remember my last post that brought up the Activity Log, I've since taken the time to make a more thorough and updated image!

When it comes to overall 3DS game usage, this image is still fairly accurate for the top third of it, apart from New Leaf's Welcome Amiibo update adding 50 hours (with more to come!). I forget how old it is, but you can see MH Generations only had 144 hours back then...

As for specifically this year...

(that's MonHun Generations up top)
Other notable games down the list:
07 - 54:47 - Animal Crossing New Leaf
09 - 37:39 - Rhythm Heaven Megamix
11 - 18:46 - My Nintendo PICROSS [Zelda]
12 - 10:07 - StreetPass Mii Plaza

And previous year totals...
2015 - 1577:55
2014 - 2119:40
2013 - 2190:09
2012 - 0888:01

Basically I'm always in my room on my laptop and almost always playing 3DS, so... that makes sense.

Posted on 03-15-17 09:13:48 PM, in How'd you learn programming? Link
I've always been somewhat interested in programming but never really bothered to actually spend time to independently learn it... In high school I stumbled upon Danmakufu and wrote a few bullet pattern scripts but didn't really polish or finalize anything, and we had a computers class that included visual programming for LEGO Mindstorms (image), then I later had a general physics class that used LabVIEW for more visual programming, but I had never learned an actual programming language.

Since I was getting back into university after a long break I wanted to ease myself back into classes again, and so last semester I took an online course which taught about the fundamentals of programming and basic C++. I quite enjoyed it! Writing my own programs outside of the curriculum definitely made me remember and practice programming so in the end I found the course itself fairly easy, although now that the course is over and I'm taking other classes I'm finding it hard to motivate myself to study C++ independently...

Really, my only regret with the class is that, uh, it seriously only taught the basics of programming, and not, say, how to write Windows applications or whatever. Only command line stuff. At least if I do want to study stuff myself then I know what to aim for!

Posted on 07-11-17 02:37:01 AM, in What're you playing right now? Link
Got Disgaea 5 Complete as soon as it came out over a month ago, and I've been basically playing it non-stop! I've already beaten everything in the game (on easiest difficulty) so there's nothing new left, but I still play because there's plenty more I wanna do: max out some pieces of equipment, clear the hardest postgame challenges on highest difficulty, collect every single item...

I've been doing a lot of tests to figure things out about the game; one of the things I learned early on was that different weapons have different random damage spread, and axes happen to have the widest spread (from +0% to +29% ATK). Therefore on average they'll do the most damage... so of course at that point I decided I wanted to max out an axe for my main unit. The problem is that axes start with negative base HIT/SPD, and the main way to boost item stats through the Item World, Training Bonuses, multiplies the base stat. There are ways to give tiny – but flat – additive boosts to the base stat, but at some point the base stat gets too negative and you can't "fix" it and get it back to positive...

Thankfully I did the math and found out that it is possible on carnage rank 1 axes (but not any higher), which includes all the 'fun weapons' with unique innocents (and their special effects), at which point I decided to max out a Trophy (because of its flavor text). After a lot of effort I managed to salvage SPD enough that it was equal to HIT, and after still more effort, just earlier today I finally got both HIT and SPD to be positive:

...Though I still need to actually start powering it up until every stat reaches the 2 million stat cap. Plenty more to go!...

This is kind of a challenge, since no matter what method you choose you'll need to grind on a single map a bunch until your total extracts reach 9 999 999... You want it to be efficient and mindless, so I'll avoid setups that require spell buffs or Magichange; also I know you're avoiding unique characters and the Sage class so I'll avoid anything from those too. A large part of the grind is actually preparing for it, haha.

20* carnage Asagi stage is probably way more efficient (doing the math, it'd take up to 27 runs with Metallia), but without a Sage's Land Decimator or Metallia's Greedy Mekhashefa, second-best is probably carnage Martial Training 4: at 20* it would take just over 200 runs, but each run should take way less set-up. The main problem is that the bears have about 1.1 billion HP, and (let's be conservative) 40 million DEF, and if you don't want to whittle them down then you essentially need to one-shot all nine with the 3x3 capture skill...

You can use a curry with 100 Thimbles as extra ingredients in order to get 100% guaranteed crits (which by default deal +50% total damage), then use a 100 Professional innocent to get another +100% damage so that crits deal 2.5x total. Then you can use Dark Knight's 4-slot evility Purgatory, which makes attacks deal 1.5x damage if they're crits. Thus you're guaranteed to deal 3.75x base damage with one innocent and only four evility slots!

At this point you still need to effectively deal about 295 million damage in one hit; bears have -25% resistance to fire, and -30% resistance to sword, so if you equip a sword in your main hand and a weapon with unique innocent Burner (to turn neutral attacks into fire attacks) in offhand then you take advantage of both weaknesses and only need to deal about 182 million damage.

Simplified to ignore all of the above, the damage formula is:
Damage = [SkillPower% * ATK * (100% + ATKbuffs%) - (DEF/2)] * (100% + DamageBuffs%)
From my very limited tests, the Capture 3 skill has about 175% skill power (where a regular attack is 100%); you want to maximize +stats% evilities and +ATK% evilities in order to overcome the bears' 40 million DEF, but then also stack +damage% evilities afterwards.

Assuming you have 10 million basic stats, then your first priority should be reaching +100% stats so that you have 20 million ATK. Taste of Victory is a 1-slot evility earned from Demon-level Chara World (or above) that gives +1% stats per map clear of the current map, so eventually it's gonna reach +100% which is basically perfect for this. Otherwise you could run 1-slot Cyan Power (+20%) and 1-slot Unstable Power (+50%) for a while.

You probably only have two free unique evility slots (from the 10000 mana bill, and the carnage Prinny overlord), but you're able to get the full two rows of common evilities so I'll assume you have all of that available. I think the following list of +ATK% and +damage% evilities is probably optimal:

- Assault Attack is notable here, since you want to attack the 3x3 group from their backside anyways (for side-/back-attack bonus damage), so if the unit isn't flying then they'll move 12 panels to go around them all (equip some carnage shoes), for +120% damage. It's a good thing that a Valkyrie is your main unit!
- Elemental Force reflects your current elemental resistance as an ATK% buff when you use that element; since you're using a fire attack (thanks to Burner), you'd want a 100 Firefighter in order to reach 99 fire resistance, for an easy +99% ATK;
- Magic Bundle is +30% ATK but skills cost 50% more SP.

- Over Limit (5 slots) gives +50% ATK but you lose 10% SP every end of turn; not an issue if you successfully capture all nine bears on turn 1;
- Mana Scarcity (4 slots), an Overlord-difficulty Chara World evility, gives +50% ATK but you only gain 30% mana;
- Attack Weakness (4 slots) gives +50% damage when hitting an enemy's elemental weakness.

With all of this, overall you have +229% ATK and +170% damage, so with 20 million attack, Capture 3's 175% skill power, and the bears' 40 million defense, you deal almost 257 million damage before weaknesses and crit multipliers; way more than the necessary 182 million!

The last issue is that, well, accuracy is based on your HIT and the enemy's SPD; if you only used your Valkyrie then you'd have about 60% accuracy when attacking from behind. Sadly there are no evilities that increase accuracy, and you can't increase your HIT stat without better equipment... The only way to reliably boost accuracy at this point is by having a second unit with the Assist evility in order to force it to 100% accuracy; thus you'd need to take out this second unit, target any bear, then move your Valkyrie behind the bears and use the Capture 3 skill. Set up correctly you should have 100% accuracy and one-shot all nine bears, and therefore guarantee their capture!

Then just run the map 200-ish times (making sure to subdue and extract before the prison reaches 128, so I guess go back every 10 runs?), and combine all the extracts, and you should finally have a capped extract of 10 million bonus stats!

Didn't touch the Testfires, but after watching some midnight-release streams and hearing about friends getting the game I impulse-bought it as well... and it's been pretty rad! The story mode level design is pretty good, separating Ranked mode's ranks between each mode (and making the squad ranked stuff not have letter ranks either) doesn't let players rely on just one mode they're good at to climb to the top, and oh my god Salmon Run is super fun with friends.

The new Dualies have been pretty fun too (and it seems like there'll be new long-range dualies tonight!), although I'm so used to having all the weapons and gear in the first game that having to start over is kinda painful... Oh well.

EDIT - Oh yeah, new NA and EU Splatfest voting should be up, I think. Mayo VS Ketchup!

From what I understand, having over 100 arrows or something makes shops stop restocking arrows, so if you then buy them all out then you can't buy any more until you dip below 100, or something like that. There used to be a glitch where doing the temporary 'lose all your items' challenges and passing midnight in the middle of them made all shops restock, since you currently had no arrows, but apparently that's been patched? Otherwise, there's a chest on a certain island that holds 10 arrows and respawns each time you load the game, so people load, grab the arrows, save, load, etc., but that's probably not something you'd want to do to stock up on hundreds of arrows.

MSN and Skype allowed for group chats but I barely made use of it, so I suppose that's why real-life friends just moved on to FB. I only ever heard about AIM when I found Jul and it had profile fields for it.

I still use IRC and Discord actively, but I don't really think many of my school friends would bother to use either of them...

Like, I can trace it back to my early childhood where my parents tutored me at arithmetic (to be 'ahead of the curve') and then kept me studying at home to be ahead of school's mathematics, in a way that helped me appreciate mathematics that most students wouldn't get from school (because of incompetent teachers, etc.), but in that respect I don't think I should be proud of having parents that decided to tutor me, y'know? I guess 'being able to intuit and visualize quickly' is nice though.

Other than that, with all the games I play and all their complex systems to master and take advantage of, I've been told I'm decent at analyzing situations and coming up with unusual solutions?

Because of the confusion between day and month, I always try to spell out the month instead of just express it with numbers, and put all four digits for the year... though in the end yeah, I still do "Day, Month DD, YYYY" (ex: Sunday, January 28, 2018) because that's the format that's expected of people in schools over here. I remember being handed an 'official English grammar guide' when I was a kid...

Weirdly, it kinda varies with language? Like, when I used to write the date in French I went with "DD Month YYYY" instead (ie., "28 Janvier 2018")...

I've been playing Animal Crossing Pocket Camp ever since it had its world-wide release, and I'm still playing! As a long-time fan of the AC series it's... definitely a different type of game, but it's cute enough that I still enjoy playing it. Main thing I'm aiming towards is 100% completion (of course), which means growing 145 of every flower! I've already collected all the flower seeds though so at this point it's just patience until they're all grown, then I can trade them in for flower-themed items.

Meanwhile, after hearing a group of friends gush about and have fun with Monster Hunter World for a week at launch, I caved in and got it for the PS4! ...despite not owning one myself, thus having to play on a family member's console, and only when family isn't watching Netflix and taking the main TV. It's super fun but I feel like it might be kinda short as a MonHun game, which I guess isn't too surprising given it doesn't have G-rank [yet], and the endgame decoration grind doesn't sound too appealing... but for now I'm just working towards making weapons and armor sets that I want. Maybe eventually I'll craft every single armor piece...?

Monster Hunter World! Can't believe my last post was almost 7 months ago saying I had been playing MHW, haha. Sadly I'm a PS4 player, and for the most part I've been soloing stuff because of the difficulty scaling making soloing way easier than grouping up with one or two friends.

Originally posted by 2Tie
what sort of weapons do you use?

I was first introduced to the series through friends in my college anime club, when they were doing group hunts in MH3U (3DS), so after reading the 3DS demo's manual and looking up info on the weapons and general gameplay I decided I should
1) pick one weapon of each damage type (cutting, blunt, shot);
2) prioritize mobile weapons.
As a result, I settled on Dual Blades, Hunting Horn, and Bow, respectively.

...and, uh, I basically haven't bothered to experiment with other weapons since then.

I've used other weapons in arena quests when none of the three were an option, and occasionally I made other weapon sets to farm specific difficult things (HBG to farm Goldbeard with the underwater siege glitch in 3U, Eldaora's Hornet to farm 140 Kushala in 4U, IG to farm White Fatalis in 4U, ...), and of course Prowler is kinda required to use in Generations, but for the most part I really stuck to those three (despite kinda neglecting HH...).

Compared to previous games, World is... weird. I kinda agree when people describe it as more of an action game compared to previous games' more deliberate and slow combat. As a DB main, going from World (attacking in archdemon mode is rarely useful, you can chain Demon Flurries and change direction easily, you can dash in any direction, you can go crazy with sliding attacks into Heavenly Blade Dance) to Generations Ultimate (demon mode drains stamina too quickly so stick to Archdemon unless you want to refill the gauge, you can chain Demon Flurries but are stuck going in the same direction, you can only dash straight forwards/sideways) felt really noticeable...
but uh, I feel like Bow really exemplifies the change. Going from "only shoot at charge level 3/4 and then power shot" slow gameplay to "get right up to the enemy and spread->rapid->rapid->rapid->spread and dash->rapid->spread repeatedly" non-stop action was a super-harsh change, it was basically a whole new weapon. Like, sure, it's super fun, but if you were to compare a usual World bow run against Kirin to a Generations bow run...

Honestly, as a DB main, with Behemoth my best DB advice is to, uh, probably switch weapon, or otherwise find a good group with a reliable tank.

I spent probably two days on and off trying to solo Behemoth when the update first hit consoles, first with DBs once a JPN player recorded a 20-ish minute speedrun, and then with Bow (once I realized that with my skill level DBs were way too short-ranged to be able to have enough DPS to finish the quest while still playing safe enough to not triple-cart), but even after all that effort the furthest I managed to reach was... timing out on the 35-minute quest timer while in the very last area.

In the end a friend finally managed to join me and we effortlessly duo'd Behemoth thanks to the extra DPS.
If you still want to stick to DBs, this was the DB set I made. Without the Azure Starlord waist I could only get Evade Extender 3, though as it turns out the Rath Soul waist's Windproof 2 was actually kinda useful for the tailwhip's wind pressure.

I put up two runs of Extreme Behemoth if you wanted to reference those, but for EX especially I'd say the key is having a super-competent group, and specifically a really reliable enmity-gathering tank. If a shield-HBG or whatever can shotgun Behemoth's face to prevent random Meteors and Charybdis-spam, and then stay against a wall while the rest of us concentrate on destroying Behemoth's forearms (and optionally with an active healer with Wide-Range so that the other players don't need to interrupt tanking/DPS), then the non-tank hunters shouldn't really be getting hit, let alone carting, at which point it's just a test of how reliable every hunter is.

Honestly, once you have a good group, it's a super-fun fight, incredibly satisfying to finally clear. I did it twice, but honestly if my friends hadn't mostly moved on from the game and the quest gave better rewards, I wouldn't have minded farming it as a late-postgame super-challenging super-rewarding farming quest. Gimme a dozen Hero Streamstones per run, game!

God, finally, access to the second USJ quest's Azure Starlord armor! Sure was annoying trying to make optimal sets without those extra Crit Element pieces.

It's really fun!

Got a copy of the game to share with a family member, but they've been busy for the last two weeks so I made sure to play as much as possible while I still had the chance. I didn't have any plans to play online regularly and thus didn't feel pressured to unlock everyone as soon as possible, so I put aside Smash mode/Classic mode and just took my time going through World of Light mode. I 100%ed it in about 24 hours of playtime, but it was so fun that I decided to aim for collecting all 1297 spirits and spent another week or so doing Spirit Board and Summon shenanigans; at this point the only ones I need are fighter spirits, from... clearing each character's Classic mode (or buying from the Shop). Oops.

There are a lot of characters but they're all seemingly well-balanced, at least for casuals like me and my friends. Sure is fun when everyone has multiple mains and yet no one shares any! When playing somewhat seriously, as someone that doesn't care enough to learn long combos or whatever, I tend to prefer projectile-based/keep-away characters, such as Link, Olimar, Robin, and to a lesser extent Villager (basically the same four I played in Smash 4).

Now that the only real thing left to do is finish the remaining 40+ Classic runs (and whatever other challenges I haven't done yet), and especially after playing almost six hours every day, I'm already somewhat burnt out on the game... which kinda works out well since family isn't busy anymore and I have to share the game again, which forces me not to overplay. Looking forward to visiting a friend in person next week and having a Smash party!

I'm so sad that playing online on PS4 requires PS+, because doing Kulve Taroth sieges is probably some of the most fun I've had with Monster Hunter World, and a more difficult KT plus neat new weapons with build-in Critical Element sounds like a fun time...

Since I've been busy with university and haven't been playing, during the last festival I ended up catching up on some of the event quests that I skipped — by which I mean doing one run of 2x T.Jho, two runs of AT Luna, and a bunch of AT Zorah. Having a more challenging Zorah Magdaros that forces you to actually engage with the mechanics of the quest (fight away Nergigante, protect the barrier, etc.) is... surprisingly great? Regular Zorah was trivially boring but AT Zorah is fun enough that I'd probably enjoy farming it, if I had any need for more streamstones.

Also coming up in the spring months is the Witcher 3 crossover event,

I know nothing about The Witcher and Geralt and stuff (just like how I had very minimal FF XIV knowledge for the Behemoth update) so that'll be interesting to see!

A G-rank update is gonna be pretty weird given the kinds of broken gear (ex: Drachen armor, Temporal Mantle) and upgrades (ex: health augment) we can currently get, and I'm kinda scared they're going to remove access to that stuff (to be re-unlocked later in G-rank) and/or totally trivialize it with even more broken stuff. This is the first time that 'postgame' gear like this is being obsoleted, right? I don't think the original MH4 had honing or crazy relics like MH4U did...

The Appreciation Festival (for the one-year anniversary of the game's release) is currently halfway done in Monster Hunter World! I've only been playing during festivals... so I had a decent number of challenging event quests to catch up on this time. Arch-Tempered Lunastra, double Tempered Deviljho, Arch-Tempered Xeno'Jiivah... and now that it's all done, there's still the Greatest Jagras event which gives a bunch of armor decorations in the rewards, so I'm farming that too to try and get my third Mushroomancer and Focus decos before the event is swapped out tonight.

New-game-wise, though, Etrian Odyssey Nexus just came out! Gonna slowly go through it as usual (and hopefully not drop the game like I did with Etrian Odyssey 5 due to schoolwork...). Seems like there's an easter egg accessed by (among other requirements) owning 100+ Guild Cards plus recruiting at least one Guild Card guest character (and using 'em in a fight), and you can get cards by scanning people's shared QR codes, so I ended up making QR codes for all 22 members of my guild. Gotta start scanning a bunch!...

The Witcher 3 collaboration has since come out! A repeatable special assignment as Geralt with a bunch of great dialog and a neat new monster (the Leshen)!

...as well as an EX Behemoth-style super-difficult limited-time event quest against an Ancient Leshen with a bunch of unique rewards.

Hm. I know I'm repeating myself here, but I just realized that I haven't really been satisfied with the three new post-release monsters (Kulve Taroth, Behemoth, Ancient Leshen), since all of them lack single-player scaling... which means that players on PS4 without PS+ (like me) can either struggle to solo it for a week, or simply can't experience the fight at all. Back when I did have PS+ I spent a few days trying to solo Behemoth before being helped out by a friend, and then thankfully managed to clear EX Behemoth before PS+ ran out, and I farmed a bunch of Kulve Taroth when she was new and really enjoyed it but now Arch-Tempered Kulve Taroth is a thing and soloing AT KT means spending 3 hours slowly grinding up pursuit level to the max just to have a chance of finishing the quest solo (so dozens of great new weapons are basically unavailable to me)...

The base Leshen itself was really fun since it was single-player-only and a simple intro to the monster, but I spent the last week grinding attempts at Ancient Leshen and finally after a week had only four over-40-minute victories under my belt (enough to craft all the usable gear), but for some reason they decided to give this limited-time event monster a pin attack that's inescapable without the help of other players (basically punishing solo players only), plus a 1% gem-equivalent item which you need multiple of to get all the new cosmetic stuff — and of course I still have zero...

Arch-Tempered events have been pretty fun, and to be honest I think the changes to Zorah Magdaros and Xeno'jiiva for the AT events have been really cool, but I'm starting to rethink whether I really want to get Iceborne if the expansion's challenges will all end up being multiplayer-focused stuff too.
