I think it's an option during terrain generation, though I don't know the details myself, especially if you also wanna mix amplified terrain and regular terrain. (I'd recommend against just using amplified terrain, having to generate/render all the complex land and shadows and stuff could be a bit taxing for some computers.)

I personally don't mind the hunger mechanics, though it not depleting as you run would definitely be nice. On Easy it only depletes to 5 hearts; on Normal it depletes up to half a heart. If we're preventing starvation from killing us, could we at least still set the server difficulty to Hard?

Come on now, that's a bit much.

For the rare plates, you usually have anywhere between 2-5% from a tail carve (one chance) and capture rewards (ie, about four chances) and about 2% from shiny drops (so maybe two chances) per quest, on top of the base 1% chance from certain quest rewards.

Anyways, to describe Monster Hunter... first off, go watch this video.

These would be my three succinct ways to summarize the game: absolutely gigantic monsters (every single one of which you can eventually kill once you learn each one's movement patterns and behavior), weapon/armor crafting for pretty fun customization (either full-on efficient but mixed armor sets, or opting for visuals regardless of bad skills), plus silly puns and humor to keep you mildly entertained while you aren't busy killing stuff all the time. It's definitely a time-sink though, I put in over 500 hours into MH3U and still hadn't made some overkill perfect armor sets yet (damn Abyssal Lagiacrus...).

Gonna reiterate that there's four-player multiplayer as well so people can help teach you how to play (and/or help you with the grinding, if they're generous), but to unlock all the content you're forced to play solo offline up to a certain point so don't expect to be carried by others all the time.

In short, as someone who mostly plays by myself I definitely second that it's basically:

Nothing about the new StreetPass Mii Plaza games?

Not gonna bother to describe them, they're kinda old news by now plus you can have them described for you in the plaza itself if you try to buy 'em. They're very fun though! I've been particularly enamored with Ultimate Angler and have been working on a spreadsheet with all the fish and their details, so if you do end up buying 'em (and I definitely recommend them!) then this should help you out (still a work-in-progress).

I feel incredibly conflicted about Splatoon.

On the one hand, it's a new IP with really fun gameplay and great music (and colors, etc.), but on the other hand it seems heavily online/competition-important and I tend to prefer to play offline or co-op, so even with the interesting offline campaign I don't know how much I'd enjoy the game. Still, again, it looks beautiful so I probably won't mind watching the higher-end matches once that kind of thing really gets going.

If I do get the game, I'll probably end up grinding the offline portions until I get really good gear, power it up to my likings, then only play with friends anyways.

I just remembered that the router here is two floors above the WiiU so I probably wouldn't be able to play online without lag. I probably won't be getting the game anytime soon, at least not until I bother to test other online games...

Kinda sucks too - the 90s atmosphere, the fashion aspect of the clothing combined with the Hyrule Warriors-esque "grind equippable items to unlock and optimize skills" would've probably convinced me to play online and not care too much about the rated mode and whatnot, but if I'd have to pay over 70$ for only the offline experience... no thanks.

Anyways, if you wanna experiment with weapon combinations, it seems like you unlock a new load-out every level, as well as after every boss in story mode, so it's probably common to find people just grinding levels as soon as they get the game without really trying to improve yet.

I got the game!

The School Uniform (from the Inkling Girl amiibo) looks amazing, by the way. Sorely tempted to actually use it in end-game gear set-ups simply because of how it looks, hahaha. Just need a non-intrusive hat and some decent plain shoes...

Completed the offline story mode but I'm still having a bit of trouble aiming. No experience with dual-stick shooters made me stay with Gyro controls instead but I tend to be a bit shaky when I'm in a shoot-out and usually end up dying... even when I ambush them from behind, gah.

Anyways, I'll see if I can reach level 20 by the end of the week alongside some decent 3-star gear.

They've added a new map to the multiplayer rotation (though it was already in the single-player campaign so it's not too much of a surprise), and because it's new, it's in both Turf Wars and Splat Zones right now if you guys wanna try out good ol' Kelp Dome.

Looks a lot less chaotic than it felt offline, though of course they always add a lot of random obstacles in story mode to make it more interesting. Gonna see if I have time to test it out in unranked mode tonight.

EDIT - It's gigantic. I'd imagine it would be easy to score a lot of points if you wanted to grind, but people who are good at stealth and managing where enemy players are would have a field day with this map. Haven't tried Splat Zones though but I bet it's fairly chaotic too, a lot of paths to the center plus plenty of ways to ambush the enemy while they're en route.

Posted on 06-23-15 12:13:34 AM, in What're you playing right now? Link

Got Crypt of the Necrodancer during Summer Steam Sales and I've been loving it. It's a roguelike where you can only do actions (move/attack, use items/spells, etc.) to the beat of the music or you're penalized, with plenty of fun characters to go through the twelve levels (divided into four zones).

Just beat the last zone with the main character Cadence, so now I wanna do the All-Zones Run before switching over to her mother, who can only attack by moving to a space adjacent to an enemy. I also need to do the never-pick-up-money run to unlock the move-every-half-beat character...

The soundtrack's really good too; the collector's edition comes with it and I've been listening to it even when I'm not playing, haha.
