So uh, hi. I plan to add info on three games (two of which I've romhacked over the years) and add screenshots from a few of my PS2 and PC games, but I have little experience with Wikis. Is there any way to have a personal sandbox of some sort I can futz around with without disrupting the recent changes? I don't want to clutter the page up.

Also hi!

Sup dude.

I have a bunch of stuff from Yume Penguin Monogatari (NES) and Sengoku Densyo (SNES) to add. I mentioned the former at RHDN years ago, it's a bit of unused script; the latter appears to be unused text of some sort, but I'm not certain I have the table set up right. It looks like proper Japanese to me, but I don't know much of anything other than some words and phrases.

Also, a couple of questions. One of my PS2 games (Bad Boys Miami Takedown) has a debug mode that can only be accessed via Action Replay / Gameshark codes. That's good content for the wiki, right? Also, do removed or added voices count for "regional differences"? Some of SNK's PS2 compilations have had voice snippets removed in their US version, plus the Korean versions of some NeoGeo games had Japanese voiceovers completely removed. And other NeoGeo games had different character names or voice samples used depending on the region they were played in. (Why did they change Marco Rodriguez to Khushnood Butt...?!)

So uh, yeah.

So uh, another question.

Does the wiki have its own Youtube account for uploading videos by the contributors? It might be better if it had one so stuff could be preserved somewhere without being exposed to random account deletions.

Edit: And just to edit the post instead of making a new one... Some of the games I'm looking into adding to the Wiki are SNK's PS2 compilations. Some of the games have removed voice data in the US version of the pack - would this count as "Games with unused sound"?

I have a -lot- of ground to cover on these packs. Wish me luck. :p

Posted on 04-20-12 01:41:54 AM, in Weird Discoveries (last edited by Foxhack at 04-20-12 02:17 AM) Link
I'm sure this classifies as weird.

So I've been digging into the PS2 NeoGeo anthologies a bit. The US versions of the Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury ones still have some leftover graphics from the Japanese versions, mostly company names and logos related to the netplay (which was removed for the US / PAL versions). They're never loaded, so they count as material I guess. I can't figure out how to work those PS2 graphics viewers but I did see the graphics, just garbled.

Earlier today while playing Fatal Fury Battle Archives Volume 1 on my PS2 (to look stuff up for the Wiki) I noticed that it was missing some songs in the music test, the attract mode songs that actually say "Fatal Fury" instead of "Garou Densetsu". They play fine in the game, so why aren't they in the sound test?

I got curious and ah, acquired ISO images of the Japanese versions to look them up. This led me to downloading audio extraction and player tools and found something weird in Garou Densetsu Battle Archives 1. The games are compressed in archives, and each game is made up of five different files - XXX.CTX, XXX.NGF, XXX.NGT, XXX.NGX, and XXXPRG.BIN, plus XXXR.NGX.

The NGX files contain the music, sound effects, and something I can't figure out. Also, the XXXR.NGX archives are basically the same as the XXX.NGX archives except they contain the arranged music instead of the original music.

But there's a ninth NGX file, 1003.NGX. That archive only contains two files, BGM and SE. The BGM contains all the music from the four games. Both arranged and original versions, 192 songs in total. The sound test only lists 96 songs, so 96 x 2 = 192.

This leads me to believe that the sound test uses 1003.ngx to play the music in the sound test, but the devs never bothered to fix the missing English versions in the file, so they won't play in the game itself. I'd do some tests but it's been absurdly hot lately and my computer's overheating.

I should be finishing that other project of mine but dammit, this got me curious!

Edit:
Samurai Spirits Rokuban Shoubu / Samurai Shodown Anthology uses a different format, it stores all the music data on one file. Odd music tracks are original, even are arrange ones. Neat.

Korea's funny.

I just added some info about the Korean versions of Samurai Shodown II and The Last Blade, but I was wondering if there's a template like "Compare", but for more than two images. If there isn't, can one be made, please?

Posted on 04-23-12 11:21:32 PM, in Any Japanese text need translating? (last edited by Foxhack at 04-23-12 11:22 PM) Link
Could I get a bit of help with this text?

This is from the liner notes for "Shin Gouketsuji Ichizoku Toukon ~Matrimelee~/Original Sound Track". The game included four extra characters from Rage of the Dragons. Three of them (Jimmy, Lynn, Elias) can be encountered as opponents in the game, but not the other one (Mr. Jones). The three you can fight have their own song in the game... and judging from the tracklist, Mr. Jones does too, but since you can't reach him, you never get to hear the song.

But the song IS in the soundtrack CD and you can still listen to it in the game via music players or the Universe Bios.

Track 16 - Joy! (Mr. Jones?) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0D0H5amZ_xs (starting at 0:26)
Track 17 - Anger! (Jimmy) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQNfVM-xXJ8
Track 18 - Sorrow! (Lynn) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PxE3owkAFA
Track 19 - Heavy! (Elias) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBvKXPsZQ7w

You can unlock all four characters via a code on the character selection screen, but the characters' theme songs don't play during versus matchups.

I'm hoping this text confirms my theory - that the song went unused because they didn't have time to add Mr. Jones to the opponent roster in the game. Thank you.

Wow, that's even weirder.

The person who wrote the liner notes makes sense, though, I've been adding info on NeoGeo games that have had most if not all Japanese audio removed in Korea. The game has a bunch of songs with lyrics, so they had to have replacements.

The US version has many of the songs switched out for some reason. :\

Thank you.

Another question.

If we already have screenshots for a game, like say, Sega Smash Pack Volume 1 on the Dreamcast, but they're from an imperfectly emulated version, would it be fine if I replaced the screenshot with a video capture?

http://tcrf.net/File:Sega_Smash_Pack_Volume_1_%28Dreamcast%29-title.png

This seems to have a weird line on the C in Smashpack and it runs all the way down. I can probably capture something using my own DC.

http://tcrf.net/File:Samurai_Shodown_Anthology-title.png
The quality's usually pretty good.

Posted on 05-05-12 10:01:01 PM, in Dance Dance Revolution for Windows - anyone have the character packs? Link
So, years and years ago, Konami tried their hand at releasing a version of Dance Dance Revolution for Windows.

It bombed hard because it was only distributed in one store in the US.

Konami had a bunch of downloadable character pack updates which were eventually ported to Stepmania, but unsurprisingly, they've completely wiped all traces of their old DDR homepage from the internet. Not even the Wayback Archive has a copy. I've googled high and low but all I get are results for the countless games they've released since.

So I'm hoping someone can help me out here. Does anyone know where I can get these update packs? I already have the game, I just need the extra characters. Thanks!

I use an Adaptec Gamebridge but that only captures from S-Video or Component at 480i. Plus the drivers are very wonky on Windows 7, and the included software plain doesn't work (plus it's garbage anyway.)

I use Virtualdub to capture video. It works surprisingly well.

Heh, this does not reflect Tennessee in its entirety. Most of the country-side and a small portion of the urban areas might hold views similar to those demonstrated in the link, but where I currently live it's not that bad. My personal opinion is that living near Nashville is best. I'm not sure about Memphis as I have only been there once or twice.

Politically, I feel that it is the more extreme conservative republicans that are pushing for legislation like these--Tennessee is a red state--However, there are still a fair amount of Democrats living in the urbanized areas. In fact, the previous Tennessee governor was democratic. Also, not everyone in a southern state are hicks, haha. (That seems to be a popular misconception)

One thing that I do like about Tennessee is how many friendly and caring people there are nearby. It would be near impossible for a Kitty Genovese type scenario to take place.

Oh I know. I've been there a few times and just LOVED the area. There were some... uh, hicks there, and every cop kept looking at me funny, but people are nice.

I'd rather live there than where I am now, anyway. It'd be much easier to get a job.

I've been poking around the Japanese version of Ranma 1/2 since the current Wiki entry is kinda barebones and doesn't mention any possible differences in the Japanese version.

In the US release, the game glitches a bit when you win as Happosai. The article mentioned that he might've been left out because of untranslated text, but he's still not usable in the Japanese version without the debug code. On the other hand, you get this text if you win sometimes. Actually, the first and third win looked fine, while the second had glitched graphics. I decided to lose on purpose, and the game crashed the emulator after I lost.

Can someone please translate this? I'm trying to figure out if it's showing the wrong text.

Let me guess, you were using SNES9x?

Zsnes, actually. I know it's far from accurate, but as I said, I was just testing stuff. I haven't tried it in bsnes yet (been busy) but in order for the emulator to crash it must've tried to do something really freakin' weird.

The corrupt text on both versions makes me think it's trying to pull data from somewhere it shouldn't, but since I'm not a programmer at all, I'm only guessing here.

Since I'm dumb, could someone please create a Power Instinct category? It should include Gouketsuji Ichizoku (Genesis), Matrimelee (Arcade and Neo-Geo), and Shin Gouketsuji Ichizoku: Bonnou Kaihou. I dunno how to do these things. :p
