So what is the damage of my fellow high school friends? What exams are you taking this time around and how do you feel about them? Cramming for the last minute? Totally prepared? Discuss.

I myself, in my senior year, will be taking a ball-busting seven exams!
1)Government - I'm feeling the four to five range if I study. I can get a 3 right now.
2)Spanish - I'm screwed. I took the class a semester late and only hope for a scrape of a pass on how well I do on the writings.
3)Calculus BC - I got a 99/108 raw on my teacher's midterm. So my hope is a perfect score.
4)Biology - If I review cells and the like, I may get a four.
5)Chemistry - I need to finish four chapters and then I'll be golden. Hoping for a five
6)Physics C: Mechanics - Mechanics was my only good part in Physics B, so after a little review, I feel I can five this exam even though the class isn't taught at my school.
7)Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism - Also not offered, but I feel if I read my review book fast enough, I'll get a four or five.

So, now that I built a healthy momentum on the topic, let's see what other people are worrying about.

Calc BC - Easy 5. Very easy.
Physics C: Mech - Easy 5. Very easy.
Physics C: E&M - Easy 5. Kinda easy.

Arrogance? You bet. But after APUSH last year and WHAP the year before, there's nothing left to scare me.

Grats, SWR, on actually taking 4 science APs. I admire that. Personally I could never have taken AP Bio; I'm not interested in things that breathe.
Thanks. I plan to double major in Physics and Chemistry and minor in math. Or get a Ph.D in Physics.
Knowing me, I'll drift to something in mechanical or software engineering though. But yeah, I'm a total science geek and proud of it.

After Insectduel provided me with a few links, I took the time to find as many Japanese hacks as the internet can offer. Of them are level hacks like Tower R E, or mod patches like auto scrolling and hammer throwing Mario. I provided mild descriptions for each file and hope the English community appreciates my efforts. If anyone is aware of a worthwhile hack not included, please inform with details.

Download

P.S. I'm going to try to put a few of the mod patches to SMAS as well. I'll share progress as I make it.

All of them were successfully patched on the 40,976 PRG1 ROM. There were probably a few I missed. You guys should check the SMB Archives site. You'll probably need a translator.

Thanks. I was indeed limited to hacks only found in the SMB Archives. Anything outside of that, I had no knowledge of.

My pride and joy of all of Stepmania!

Let's see. I've got quite a few accomplishments in the DDR real world. I have AAAs on Sexy Planet Oni (Singles and Doubles) from DDR Extreme along with Holic on Heavy. I've got AAAs on rainbow rainbow and My Summer Love on Supernova, along with the current record on all 10 footers (all passed) and 3 greats on Orion .78! I have a plethora of other achievements, but meh.

There you have it. Tomorrow I'm going to Six Flags Magic Mountain to compete in the DDR competition. I need the $500.

Edit1: Here's the link to World 1 demo if you're bored.

Anyone who goes on IRC or reads the SMAS dis thread, knows that I've been working on an editor for Super Mario All-Stars. The editor has been an idea of mine ever since I started collecting SMAS data back in '06, but only recently did I gain momentum when I decided to write it in C#.

Stuff I have done so far:

-A full palette editor which can edit all colors in the game,
save them to external files, and, of course, load palettes from
them too.

-A GFX editor very similar to Tile Layer Pro and Lunar Magic's (which was based off of TLP). Once again, GFX pages can be saved to and loaded from external files.

-A Map16 editor with very similar functionality to that of LM's.

Stuff I still need to do:
-An objects editor
-Enemy tile editor
-Animation data
-Property data (like enemy speed, jump height, etc)
-Levels (duh)

Stuff I plan to do, but probably won't for difficulties:
-ASM Editor
-ExGFX
-Extended Map16

Click here or here to see the editor at its current power.

Stuff I've done to the ROM:
-I've completely re-written the level pointers to allow up to 256
levels
-I've edited header data for custom (or infinite) time, starting on
any XY in the first page, selectable Layer 2 BG, and other goodies

Stuff I'm still working on:
My biggest problem with the SMB1 ROM is the "No more than 5 objects in a vertical line" limit. If you ever hacked SMB1 NES, you'd remember it was three. It's five in SMAS, but I don't like any limits.
The picture below shows what I mean.

To fix this, I had to completely erase how level data is written (it was hardcoded), so I am currently re-writing the level ASM routine to get rid of this. The plus side of this is that I'll be able to add something similar to SMW's LevelASM feature which can be integrated to the editor later on.

Another thing you SMB editors may remember is that you could only expand something across X or across Y, not both. So if you wanted to make large, rectangular objects, it'd be a tedious pain.

Well, I am not done with the work yet, but I can finally write individual Map16 tiles into rectangular shapes up to 16x16 in size in any position without stuff disappearing.

Think of it like making levels in LM with only the Map16 tiles. While this means levels can be made, I still want to make whole objects like pipes, castles, flagpoles, etc. and ASM like pageskips, bullet bill screen generators, and castle loops. So everything is still very WIP.

Finally, to wet your appetites just a little bit more, here is a Kaizo-like, level-only hack, TAS speed run of World 1 of SMB1 and SMB3. The levels were made painstakingly in a hex editor back in '06.
<object width="445" height="364"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/f4dRChfDh90&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="445" height="364"></embed></object>

I will release the editor when I finish the SMB1 portion (expect it by the end of '09 hopefully) and will continue to release it for every game the editor can work with. As you can see in the vid, I already have data on SMB3 (and of course the Lost Levels since it's so similar to SMB1).

I'm open to suggestions or features you guys would like to see in the editor.

I've actually been thinking of this idea for a good long time. I'd like it to start at the game screens, but then I face the issues of save data. I can start it as a lock on the select screen, but that's not too appealing.
I'll definitely look at the issue though.

Regardless, this is pretty neat. I would strongly recommend implementing a file menu over buttons, though, and especially over hotkeys:
File
- Save
------------
- Export to file
- Import from file

Also, having a scrollbar (or other method of selection, like a dropdown box) for selecting palettes would be better than buttons.

I will have all the functions selectable in the main file menu. Also, I do use a drop-down box for selecting palettes.

That looks fantastic man. I say the more Lunar Magic-like features you can get the better. The map 16 editor alone shoots this editor right to the top in my opinion.
If you like that, you're really going to love the next thing I'm working on: an objects editor. It will allow you to rearrange what map16 tiles certain objects use, like castles, pipes, you can even make your own. I'm dedicating an extra byte in level data for custom objects (or maybe extended Map16 depending on which seems better). But the standard objects editor will come in and will have room for custom objects regardless.

I only ask that you give SMB2 its proper time and effort. It seems like most people just don't give a rats ass bout it, hence why SMB2 editors suck/don't work.

Trust me, I feel the same exact way about it. I love SMB2 equally to all other SMB games and plan to give it all the same functionality and power as the other 3 games.

This is another SMAS SMB vid.
It's Acmlm's The New Strange Mario Bros. This video shows all the bugs and crap I still have to work on before releasing the editor. I did not show all the bugs, just some of them.

No progress has been made on the editor for a while

Anyway, here's some stuff I've been working on as of late.

Here's a little patch I made which replaces the SMB1 1UP with a poison mushroom. They act just like you'd expect. As a note, I did not point this to the SMB:TLL Poison Mushroom, but just rewrote the 1UP routine and tileset/palette info.

Also, is a Continuous Star patch, which act just like the continuous stars in SMB3/SMW (gives you a star if you have one, or a coin otherwise).

This patch replaces the 10 coin block.

Feel free to download these patches here.

And now, for the main distraction!
As some of you may or may not know, I've mentioned a few times that over 50% of the ROM data in SMAS is just Raw GFX. For me to want to build an editor, this causes a problem, as Custom GFX will surely nom an entire game if not handled well. "So SWR, what ever will you do? Will you just give up on MushROMs?" you may be asking. Well, at first, I was going to exclude any custom GFX, this may have made a whole lot of you upset I can imagine. However, a few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of learning the LC_LZ2 compression format, the one SMW uses on its GFX. I managed to build a decompressor with some trial and error. But this wasn't too hard, because I just have to follow the rules of the compression format. Sadly, this tool is useless because my goal is to compress the GFX, and that means looking for optimal ways to do this. In time (a lot of time), I finally built a compressor which, so far, has been working.

This photo showcases what a normal SMAS ROM would look like versus what their compressed GFX look like. In SMB1 alone, the game with the fewest GFX by far (SMB2 and 3 have about 2x and 3x as much), I've managed to save up 54.4 KB (about two whole banks). So one can imagine how much space this will save. However, I could not just slap this in the ROM and hope my emu would know the difference. That never happens (sadly).

You'd get that if you'd have tried.

Fortunately, at this similar time did I start learning what VRAM was, purely by accident I may add, and began reading up on it. I learned about DMA transfers and the like and then peeked in the SMW ROM to see ASM's style of decompressing GFX. I used something similar for SMAS and the result is this screencap

This took a little longer than expected because SMAS has a really creative (lame) way of drawing the Mario/Luigi sprite in VRAM which I had to account for.

What does this mean for you? What else? Custom ExGFX are no longer a question or hope, but a certainty! I will begin rewriting the MushROMs GFX class to make all the changes. Thankfully, because I already built a (re/de)compressor in C#, this will not take too long.

For those curious, the ASM file I wrote for the custom ExGFX totaled 971 lines and 144 KB with the compressed bin files.

Danielle, are you a lefty? I noticed your hi-hat on the right side.

Anyway, I do a little piano and drumming.
Here are some pics of my set:

I got into music about 9 years ago. Did piano for a year and then drumming for a year. I'm much better at drums and love it much more. My progression story is much like Danielle's. My hands were easy to work with. Took some time with hands and foot, and I've been practicing double bass a lot these days.

Yeah, it has be one of the smallest kicks out there. But if tuned right, plays a powerful and nice sound.
This set started with snare, kick, two toms, cymbal on the lamp, and smaller hi-hat. I've been adding to it over time and I've been looking for toms, but they aren't easy to find individually. Especially regarding my set (Black Mapex Venus) which is not made anymore.

On a side note, the two toms are 7"x8" and 10"x12". They have such a strong difference in tone I usually do rolls tom-snare-tom rather than snare-tom-tom.

Also, glad you like it. We must duel for the Rock Gods one day!
