Posted on 07-14-12 10:40:03 PM, in the heart vs the mind Link
In general, for me it's always the mind, but for some reason I often know it should be the heart instead.

For as long as I can remember, I have constantly been observing the lesson that whatever first pops to my mind, usually is the correct answer, especially if I start doubting it and give what I think is a "conforming" answer instead, or if miss the opportunity alltogether. Though it might also be a case of observation bias.

The battle between these two orientations is why people alternatingly perceive me as analytical and as whimsical.

Spiders in Finland are quite small. I tend to leave them alone (after all, they trap and eat more annoying insects such as houseflies or mosquitos), unless they are somewhere where I really don't like them to be, such as crawling up my legs or in a computer.

They did explain that FFS do "not encourage him" by giving him "any more attention".

I admit, when I still was a moderator (and other things), I also did tend to go somewhat to extremes to keep banned users banned.

However, while Xkeeper has (repeatedly) shown "I do not agree with you, and you do not seem to take me seriously, so I will deface you and proceed to be a general nuisance and an annoying brat" type tendencies, this is just silly.

Since thread necromancy appears to be somewhat frowned upon on this board, suffice to just say that what is on my mind right now is that this post was absolutely hilarious.
Rarely do I laugh at bad code, but I did, because it also had the circumstances.

I live about 30-40 km away from the capital of my country, but to this day I have never went by the underground train (metro), and only maybe twice by the tram. And I don't remember a single time in my life that I would have been travelling by bus without a) travelling with someone or b) it being a charter.

I travel by train regularly, and I have been to a boat, several times in a plane, boarded the underground many times in Wien and in New York during my visits there, but for some reason the metropolitan public transportation in Finland has remained foreign to me aside from the local train lines.

I don't really CARE that much about coffee. Then again, I'm not really a tea person either. But I enjoy both if served!

Not at the same time, though.

You may also note that game developers reused engines and/or parts of code from their previous creations.

The game engines for Rockman and Rockman 2 were largely identical, for example. The sound engine in particular in Rockman 2 is identical to that in Rockman 1 almost down to instruction. They did improve a few instructions. But the same sound engine (which takes up a 16 kB memory page including the songs) was a stock one: It was used in a few other CAPCOM games, I gather (though I have not studied it in detail).
It had features that were not used in Rockman 1 or 2, such as fading the song volume.

Curiously, they rewrote the engine from scratch for Rockman 3, adding pitch slide support among other things. (Rockman 1 and 2 had pitch slides only in the form of selectable preset vibratos.)

In this month I will once again be reminded how short the life is, and how little I have accomplished in the time already spent.

I will also possibly be getting a new car (which is actually an old car, akin to how the biblical new covenant is the old covenant renewed).

And hopefully this month I finally finish one or more of my YouTube videos that I've been working on for a bit too long.

[My background graphics / avatar may be missing for a moment due to DNS not having caught up to my ISP changes, which happened this month. Please disregard the loading timeouts.]

Posted on 08-03-12 08:00:29 PM, in What if you only had one more week? (last edited by Bisqwit at 08-03-12 08:33:42 PM) Link
I would probably try my best to ensure, that everything that I have unfinished, that is worth finishing some day, will be at least known by someone, if not directly continued by that person.
Which may drive me insane, as most likely I would find myself unable to find such people. Then I would just resign.

I would also say particularly nice words to some people, to not worry about me. Which I think, would not work very well. Because at least personally I dread the days when I will have to sort out funerals and inheritances of my relatives, and the associated taxes, bureucratics and other ultra-stressful but-thou-musts that come with it, not to mention any feelings that might take me completely by surprise. Which is one of the reasons I would never suicide. It's just the biggest* fuck-you that I can imagine.

That is, if the one week was definite and inevitable and not something like a doctor's life expectancy forecast. Because if I fall the recipient of the short stick in one of those, I intend to do most that I can to get a godly intervention, even if I was completely "full of days", just to gauge my life's worth in God's eyes.

*) Not true. I can imagine much more horrible things. But I still do not want to inflict that situation on anyone willingly.

Posted on 08-07-12 05:54:30 AM, in Looking at people in eyes (last edited by Bisqwit at 08-07-12 06:03:34 AM) Link
So I have been perplexed by this dilemma.

Only recently (a few years ago) I learned to look at people in the eyes. Previously, I always looked at their mouth, or their nose, because I felt that it helped me to understand them better.

But even now, I cannot figure out how to look at people in the eyes. I can look at their eye. The left eye, or the right eye. But I cannot look at their eyes. It's just impossible to focus in two places at the same time. If I try to look in the between of their eyes, at the nose bridge, I am not really focusing at either eye, and the whole effort feels wasted.

So usually I beam at their left eye. How do you people do?

Showers for quickly getting it done, baths for relaxation, enjoyment and serious contemplation times.
Though now that I no longer have a bathtub, I sometimes do the latter in the shower sitting down.

Posted on 08-15-12 04:01:32 PM, in I ate a grasshopper. Link
I ate a grasshopper today, after my cat lost interest in playing with the jumpy insect that appeared on my balcony out of a sudden making noise. I inserted the battered insect and its severed leg in boiling water, and ate it, after it had been soaking for a while. It had a similar texture to certain types of grass blades, but no particular taste that I noticed.

In some countries, particularly in southern Mexico and in many parts of Africa, grasshoppers are eaten normally. In most "western" countries, not so.
In the Bible, the grasshopper (or locust) is the only insect that is defined as kosher, i.e. fit for human consumption, so I did not particularly flinch. I generally try to follow a kosher diet in principle, because I believe that God is smarter than we are.

What is the strangest thing you have voluntarily eaten?

Motherboard: Raspberry Pi, model B - Broadcom BCM2835 SoC
- CPU: Integrated [ARM1176JZF-S running at 750 MHz]
- Ethernet: Integrated Ethernet-to-USB adapter [100 Mbit, smsc95xx compatible]
- Sound: Integrated [bcm2835]
- RAM: Integrated [256 MB boot-time split into 224 MB for system RAM, 32 MB for graphics RAM]
- Display card: Integrated [VideoCore IV], capable of 1920x1200 HDMI, not being used as such yet though
- Other connectors: 2 x USB, UART, an I²C bus, a SPI bus with two chip selects, 8 x GPIO
Primary Storage: Sandisk 2 GB SD card
Secondary Storage: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10, 400 GB size, connected through a SATA-to-USB adapter. Used as swap only currently.
Keyboard: Mini 87-Key USB Wired Keyboard - Black
Mouse: Logitech USB Optical Mouse
OS: Raspbian, based on Debian GNU/Linux
Display: ASUS PC laptop running through a brandless USB composite video capture stick :F
Power source: A transformer that produces 12V + 5V separately is used to power the harddisk. The 5V is also split into the microUSB power-in connector of the motherboard using a very ducttapey wiring system. I previously also used succesfully a Veho Pebble portable charger as the power source, but its charge does not last many hours.

Not my primary computer, though.
