| Apparently I no longer had an account here. Well, luckily reregistering was easy. Too bad I got one of my connecting IPs banned trying to log in on my nonexisting account.
Thanks RahanAkero for the correction. I have included it on that page now. I also put there a chart listing each string at the end and whether the information within were true, false, clear, and/or incomprehensible in Japanese and in English, and why did it change if it did. Off-topic note: Wow, same mood numbers (from 0-13 anyway) as at TASVideos. |

| In the last few weeks I have invested some time in doing something I have never done before: Dumping a Famicom/NES ROM.
It is the only NES game I have ever owned, a 5-in-1 pirate multigame cartridge. I recently covered it on my YouTube channel.
To that purpose, I bought an Arduino compatible board (and a solder sucker) and programmed the Arduino into an EPROM/ROM dumper.
Since it is a bit off-topic, I won't cover the rest of the dumping process here (it is already described at the NESDev board), but what is interesting is what's in the games. Apparently, they messed up when making the multigame cartridge. When burning the graphics for Arkanoid, they inserted Arkanoid's graphics... and graphics from a completely different game, Argus, that is not even found in the cartridge.
(Left: Original graphics; Right: NTDec graphics) As a consequence*, though the game can still be beaten normally, the graphics in the final stage and in the ending are broken. Admittedly, pretty much nobody can beat the game, so the chances of that mistake ever coming up barring ROM dumping were slim, but it is still a mistake. *) They are also broken because the game does not even attempt to switch to proper CHR-ROM pages, meaning the CHR-ROM contents of the wrong game are not seen.
Also, because of the special bootstrap mechanism the game uses to launch Galaxian (which resides in the same memory page as the main menu, requiring special maneuvers for the reset&IRQ&NMI vectors), the music easter egg does not work in this version of Galaxian (despite the game program code being identical to the real Japanese version of the game, barring the removal of copyright strings). More information: http://nesdev.parodius.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?p=96455#96455 I don't know how it goes with the copyright policies of this board, but for comparison, here's the graphics of the other games (real and pirate) side-by-side. You can also see the modified title screen (where all copyright & company logo strings were removed). Legend of Kage:
The Goonies:
Note the clever use of 1bpp overlays to increase the mileage of the CHR-ROM in the bottom left corner (title screen graphics). Urban Champion:
Galaxian:
They removed the company logo (NAMCOT) in Galaxian CHR-ROM. Odd, because they did not do so for any of the other games. |

The General forum... Must every board have one? (Rhetorical question.)
(The hierarchy goes board->forum->topic->post I presume. Sometimes the meaning of board and forum are swapped.) Aside from a few concentrated spots of a particular topic (such as TCRF wherein I posted earlier), I don't quite understand what is the point or purpose of this board. Can anyone elucidate? |

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have probably asked you about the board history once or more before, but I have good capacity for forgetting things... Tangible benefit: Spoilers don't work well on me. And had TASVideos/NESVideos not been taking most of my time back then, I would probably have been a regular here instead. :-) EDIT: No forum search feature? :o |

Originally posted by Xkeeper Yes, I had registered on the previous version of the board and had more posts there than I have here now; that much I remember. I did not remember being on the IRC channel, but then again, I have been quite random and unattached about then in general. I see what you mean re: whitelists not being updated. Yes, it's a difficult compromise. I have many images on my server but an abysmal upload bandwidth. I want to be in control of in which situations those resources are used. Unfortunately machines are like that: machines. They do what they're made to do, with no judgement to the situation. At least as long as people don't figure out how to upload a mind to a computer. |

No love for the perpetual testing initiative (puzzle editor)?
I am disappoint(ed). I made a few test chambers myself. |

I found it a neat diversion.
Unlike Hammer, the Puzzlemaker has a very short learning curve, meaning people can dive into puzzle-making right away and immediately. You don't need to invest particular effort in using the tools. Instead, you can concentrate on what you want to accomplish. Well, most of the time, when the editor's limitations are not getting in the way. Sure, it's limited in what you can do, but artists are not defined by their tools. Good artists make good stuff even with bad tools. Surely everyone has seen amazing drawings that have been made in mspaint, for example. And no, I don't think that "reflex twitch portaling go", i.e. puzzles that require impossibly accurate/rapid maneuvers, makes for good puzzles, either. |

Well, Jul is also the Swedish word for Christmas, and shares the common root from which the Finnish word for both Christmas (joulu) and a feast (juhla) comes.
For example, santa claus = julgubben in Swedish. And after watching this video (or these two) it should not be unclear what's my opinion of that :-) Also, I kind of approve of listening to What is love in a 10-hour loop. It's a catchy song with a great singer, a good melody and a good background music. Stupid lyrics, though, which caused me to initially hate the song. |

The term "just us" is really quite flexible and abstract though.
I never realized that "justus" is syllabilized like that. I saw that somewhere in Xkeeper's works before, but I never thought of that. For me it has only been a Roman name. (Also, an acquiantee of mine used to call me by that name for whatever reason I still don't know really long time ago.) |

Implications check: They employ fans? |

Do you refer to using the PC speaker in its squarewave tone format (as used by most of the 286 games), or using it to drive PWM music (PCM-like, but with a high-pitched background noise), such as many 386 demos and MOD players?
Because when you allow PWM, you can pretty much get anything. Also, do you count SN76496, the chip in Tandy 1000 (a PC with 8088 that I have) that gave the computer capability for three-channel sound and changing volume but otherwise sounds exactly like the PC speaker? About year ago I created this video, in which I write in assembler and demonstate a program that plays NES music on the Tandy 1000, and at parts it sounds pretty authentic: http://youtu.be/gjuHxjdv3ZE (music begins at 8:26). It is a successor to this other video, in which I demonstrate the soundchip in GW-BASIC: http://youtu.be/e3L_Ceat4Ss Incidentally, I also demonstrated how the chip can crudely approximate PCM sound even without PWM tricks, by simply reprograming all the signal generators very rapidly (but not so rapidly as to emulate PCM/PWM) in a precisely calculated manner. The sound in this video is produced through an emulated SN76496: http://youtu.be/YBxq7k45pBo - Surprisingly, the speech is understandable for most parts, as long as there is not much background noise. Unfortunately I don't particularly know any good cases for PWM-less PC speaker music (not that it doesn't exist). FM/OPL is more my thing :-) |

I agree that data storage requirements are not going to be a factor in the long run.
But this will make the art of focus pullers void! And that can't happen. (In a similar manner as home cassette recorders, and later CD copiers, robbed performing artists of their work, you know.) |

I have to say, knowing exactly what is involved in creating a hack like this (at least for Rockman 1 and 2, which I am quite familiar with), makes this twice as impressive. There's hardly any lag in it, either.
And the fact that you created it for I see you solved the problem of limited CHR-RAM space by vanquishing the shots of the previous weapon the instant the weapon is switched. That is probably the only other option to waiting until the shots disappear. |
