This recent thread got me to log into my photobucket, for the same reason. Just to make sure my images aren't deleted and my old posts from ~2003 don't lose their images.

Interestingly, photobucket complained that I had too many images and would only show 250, but it seemed like they were all there? I definitely don't understand that company. Either way, I think I actually might throw them a few bucks, just because they're actually not that scummy. I mean, it feels bad because it used to be free, and now they're holding our images hostage. But on the other hand, they've been hosting my pics for almost 20 years and haven't deleted one of them. And sure, they put their stupid watermark on them, but they're still displaying them on those ancient forum posts. That's actually pretty cool.

I think Roxie just clued me in to why I'm so suspicious of Discord. They're not chasing ad revenue. I can't believe that Nitro sales are enough to keep the platform running, and even if they're selling our data (which we all know they are), that can't fill in the gaps. Where is the money coming from? Or rather, how long will the venture capital last until Discord is just as ad-ridden as Facebook and Twitter and all the rest.

On (most) forums, that will never be an issue, because in general they're small enough that either the owner can cover the hosting costs, or at the very least a few diehards can make up the rest with donations here and there.

I think this is actually my favorite thing about forums. I frequently go through bouts of just not wanting to be on a particular forum (not for any reason, just, you know.), but when I come back, all threads I missed are marked as new, and if it's something I'd be interested in reading, I can quickly skim through it, read the posts I want, and move on. And I can mark the threads I care less about as read. On a discord channel, everything is just lumped into one big chat, so if you go even a few days without checking it, well, those conversations are, for the most part, gone. And it's not even a consideration with most other forms of social media.

Ahh, I really like this thread, it's reigniting my love of the humble web forum. I'm glad I stumbled across this place, and that I just happened to come back during this bout of activity. Thanks for being there~

I play nothing. I don't have the spiritual fortitude to learn to do something, nor the money to even buy a crappy instrument.

I think if I could play something, I'd like to play sax, trumpet, or piano. Probably in that order.

Wish I had one of these. I often find myself in dusty situations with not enough eyelashes to protect myself.

I mean I'm sure it was using Internet Explorer for rendering, but it was more like the old AOL or CompuServe browsers.

Since you can't get it installed without signing in, I'm willing to bet it doesn't work without a subscription. On second thought it probably doesn't work at all.

You could test it for only $9.95 for a one month subscription! If that doesn't get you in the door, I don't know what will!

I hated SMF too, but I had a few haunts that used it, so it kind of grew on me. I still wouldn't choose it, but I've grown to not hate it so much.

Anyway, the simple answer to all of the web's problems is to switch from a per-click model to a time-on-page model. Imagine if Google ranked sites higher if they were useful, and lower if you opened them and immediately closed them because of some autoplaying video.
