So of course, playing Mario Party 3 inevitably leads to playing Mario Party 2 (But not 1... Only villains go for that). It's a really weird thing for me, because while 3 is certainly the more polished game, and even has some of the best minigames copied directly from its predecessor, Mario Party 2 is just... More fun.
And by that, I don't mean to imply that Mario Party 3 isn't fun, or even that 2 is really more enjoyable. I just mean that Mario Party 2 felt more playful. Even from the very beginning, starting a game, 2 starts with the characters running down a pipe accompanied by a wild orchestra, while 3 starts with the characters taking an elevator, complete with elevator music in the background. Mario Party 2 has everyone dress up, and even Bowser, who is not just a villain, but an active antagonist in every single game, gets in on the fun. Landing on a Bowser space isn't even a bad thing, since you visit a cute and pudgy Bowser who is just as likely run away because he offered to give you 100,000 stars, as he is to take coins from you. This technically exists in MP3, but it's much more rare.
All in all, it's just a really goofy game, that definitely doesn't take itself serious in any way at all, while Mario Party 3 is more like a formal exercise to find out who the Superstar really is.
Oh yeah, and also, in the beginning of MP2, Wario comes in, says he's the best, then just minds his business until Mario walks up and punches him in the back of the head for no reason. Who's the bad guy now, Mario?
