Posted on 08-17-21 12:42:44 PM, in 20 years of Acmlm's Board Link
I guess I'll post my history with Acmlm, too. I was there, I saw it all.

I just never joined. I think I first became aware of it some time in 2003 maybe as early as 2002, thanks to Kiwibonga's clone board. A bunch of cool people from acmlm showed up there (but I think they all grew out of forums) before the board imploded in 2004 from poor programming (These are kiwi's words--at the time, and even still today I'm impressed that it managed to work at all!)

I always thought I wasn't cool enough for the big-boy ROM hacking board. I went there and saw all these cool projects, and neat layouts, and thought, "jeez, they'll think I'm such a l4m3r." (remember that this was the era when we still thought l33t was cool) (because it was) (and still is).

Anyway, I always thought the acmlm-style board was the coolest, but after acmlm kind of disappeared and I didn't really know anybody well enough to get invited to the various communities that developed afterward, I thought the whole scene was just done. It was really cool for me to find Vizzed and say, "Hey cool, I remember this." And from there finding the quiet and laid back Jul.

Well, see you in a month to reminisce about stuff nobody else remembers!

I like your website a lot! It doesn't feel like you were specifically trying to make your website look like something from the 90s or 00s, it's just kind of ended up that way because you're not really using the "modern" toolkits for making websites.

Very nice look and feel.

Posted on 08-17-21 04:23:51 PM, in How terrible is your ISP? Link
Not to brag, but my ISP is amazing. It's a rural co-op, so there are no hidden gotchas, and they genuinely try to give really great service. I have fiber to my house, and although it's more expensive than the local cable conglomerate, it's more expensive in the way that a house is more expensive than a tent. You get what you pay for.

Plus, since it's a co-op, if the company runs at a profit, we get rebates on our service based on the amount we paid in over the year. This has happened a couple of times since I signed up. I hope I never have to go back to corporate-owned service!

Hmm... I kind of got back into Animal Crossing New Horizons. Trying to complete my Pokedex Critterpedia. Not sure I'll be able to, though. That darn cicada shell is apparently very elusive.

I also bought Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1+2 for Switch. It's cool, it's fun, definitely a blast from the past, but if you weren't around for the originals (And aren't super into skating) it's probably not that interesting.

Oh dang, I kind of feel like you're missing out. The whole BSD ecosystem is really nice. You might say, "The world is quiet here." While not everything works, everything that does work, just works.

If you ever find a system where some BSD works for you, you should definitely give it a go.

Another problem with smartwatches is that they're all (subjectively, of course) super ugly. I really hate the way they all look. But then I found the Fossil HR Collider hybrid, and that's a watch I could wear. It's not as smart as a smartwatch, but it's a watch first, and smart second.

The only thing is, this version seems to have some reliability issues. So maybe Fossil isn't the way to go, but knowing about hybrid watches has given me a market to watch keep an eye on.

Back in my day it was uncommon to find someone on a forum older than 14.

now it's uncommon to find someone on a forum younger than maybe 28?

That thing is actually really cool! I suspect there were a ton of fun, interesting devices like this that maybe only 100 people remember.

I think kiwibonga still owns kiwibonga.com, so maybe watch that space for him? I should reach out to him, he was a pretty cool guy, and incidentally my gateway to acmlmboards.

Anyway, since we're indulging in old desktop screenshots...

This may be the oldest screenshot I still have easy access to. Fun facts: I'm now married to the person I'm IM'ing named <> Jody <>. Yes, it is that SuperYoshi, but before he invented YouTube Poop. Actually, this may have been after that video was posted, but before YTP was a thing.

Posted on 10-20-21 04:09:29 AM, in I'm making mac and cheese Link
Last week I had some friends over, and we wanted a pizza.

But the pizza joint wasn't doing carryout, only delivery.

But they don't deliver to my address. It was weird and annoying.

So I made some mac and cheese. It blew their minds away. they were so surprised at how good it was. But I was confused, because it was just Kraft instant mac. After discussing it, we found out that they don't read the instructions, they just pour some random amount of milk and butter into their pot.

It's almost like the people who print instructions know what they're talking about..

I work about five miles from where I live. But every time I consider it, something comes up to make it more difficult than it needs to be. I wish I didn't need to own a car, but I find not having one to be too debilitating.

A friend of mine recently got rid of his car--his wife still has one, but they've still downsized. I hope to emulate that soon. But of course, I have kids and they don't.

I think some time in August I started playing Animal Crossing New Horizons again. I'm enjoying it, playing probably about four times per week? I think when it came out I was so desperate for anything to do that I would just play it for far too long, and the game is really not designed for that.

Also been playing Metroid Dread. It's nice, but I might need to take a break, my right index finger is pretty sore...

Sleeping in and having wings sounds pretty dope to me right now.

But I'm the type of person who thinks living for 100 years is a fate worse than death.

It's a house, but the plot is pretty grassy.

It's in a nice neighborhood, close to some other friends of mine who happened to also buy houses recently. So that's a very huge bonus. I don't know what to say, it's a nice place.

Thank you for posting this. I love Game Boy games, but have never found myself in the homebrew scene. This should prove to be lots of fun.
