Well children, gather 'round and I'll tell you the tale.
You see, many years ago, the internet was not a thing that was just in our homes. It was something you connected to. Your computer wasn't just a means to a web browser, but a thing that functioned on its own. You had to plug your computer into a telephone line and it would "dial-up" to the Internet.
In those days, it was confusing for people because you had to put your ISP's phone number into a dialing program on your computer, then open your web browser to get anywhere. And back then, there wasn't webmail, so you had to use yet another program to get to your email.
Programs like AOL and MSN Explorer came in and had everything all in one. A single app that would dial in, and present you with a browser, access to your email, and instant messaging all in one window.
The experience was awful for anyone who had the slightest idea how to use a computer, but it wasn't made for those people.
