I'm gonna post this here because I figure, besides Pokecommunity, this'll probably get the most attention here. Plus I wanna see what you guys do with it.

Pokemon Generation I Graphics Compressor

The instructions are on the page. It picks which interpretation compresses the best and gives you that one (except for in the secret debug mode, which isn't that hard to find as long as you know how to _REQUEST it). It doesn't do that very efficiently though, as it just tries every single one and then gives you the smallest one.

Note: This page may at some time move, or be removed altogether. I'll try to edit the post should that happen.

So I (fairly) recently acquired a touch screen register from my work Arby's. It has Windows 98 SE on it right now.

Here's some specs:
  • Processor: Intel Celeron 566 MHz
  • RAM: 128MB (standard SDRAM SO-DIMM you'd find in a laptop)
  • HD Space: 10.041 GB (9.352GiB)
  • The screen appears to have a maximum resolution of 800x600, although up to 1280x1024 is supported by "scrolling"....
  • 1x Microphone port
  • 1x Speaker port
  • 1x Keyboard port
  • 2x USB ports
  • 1x Parallel port
  • 2x Serial port (DE-9 connector)
  • 1x Serial port (ethernet connector)
  • 1x Ethernet port
Currently, I have Opera 10.63 on it with Flash Version 9.0.280, and it runs YouTube great. It does pretty much anything I'd want to it. There are a few drawbacks though.
  • No battery
  • No Wifi
  • Fan is rather loud, and while it does a great job reducing the heat when it's on its stand, if I put it on my lap, it heats up rather quickly
But I had some plans to make it even more awesome, but I'm not quite sure how to go about all of them (in order of how much I want to do them):
  • Build a battery pack, and perhaps a car adapter. According to the bottom of the register, it's rated 12VDC, 6.5A, whereas the AC adapter box lists its output at "+12V (Direct current symbol) 9.0A" Does anyone know if I'd need any other specs, and how I could find such a battery?
  • Some sort of Wifi adapter. This one, I have a two options. There is an internal PCI slot, however, it's rather awkward seeing as there's no place for the bracket to come out of the computer. For a Wifi card, that may not be too much of a problem; I could just rip the bracket off. I'm just still not sure if it would fit. My other option (that I kinda like better) is to get one of those "AP-Client"s (basically, Wifi to ethernet adapter) off of eBay. The only main problem is they require a USB port for power, although there are a few unused pins on the inside that are labelled 5.0V. The thing is though, even though I have two ethernet ports, I'm unsure if the one labelled "COM" can be used for internet or not. Also, I'd really like to keep as many ports as possible free anyways. That's why I want to find a way to have it so when there's something plugged into the ethernet port, it overrides the AP-Client and uses that instead. But how would I go about that?
  • A new internal fan. Easy enough, I've seen some that are compatible with the voltage and the pinage and the same dimensions on eBay. I just hope they're quieter than this one.
  • Internal Speakers. Similar to the AP-Client, I'm not sure how I would get it so that plugging in speakers to the speaker port overrides the internal ones.
  • Internal Microphone. See above.
  • A 512MB stick of RAM. It might come in handy. Especially just in case I decide to do the bullet point below.
  • Windows XP. I'm rather unsure of this one. I know even as it stands now, it meets not only the minimum, but the recommended specs, but I'm still not sure how well that would run. Anyone every try Windows XP on a rather weak computer?
  • Bluetooth. See the Wifi thing about a PCI device. And again I'd rather not use up a USB port. Plus this'd probably only be if I updated to Windows XP (it would be a pain in 98), and I'm not even quite sure how much I need it in the first place

Any question/concerns/comments?

Hell, turn it into a kickass replacement for your car's dashboard panel?
Fuck yeah, that'd sound kickass (one of my managers at work suggested that too). Problem is, I don't have a car anymore (before and after). So I drive my mom's to and from work. Also it's rather big and clunky (35x28x8 cm, and I didn't weight it). Plus, I just want to it be a portable computer since I don't have one.

Depends if the jack has that sensor on it.
I kinda doubt there is. Is there any way I could build one with a sensor to replace the current one, or buy one like that?

(But seriously Linux would be even better )
Any recommendations for Linux distros with those specs? I'm not sure though, Windows 98 sorta has a nostalgic feel to it. Besides, if I ever need Linux, I have it on my desktop (dual boot Windows XP/Ubuntu 10.04).

My regular desktop (Warning: 3968x1080 at 24bpp == more than a 6MB image)

My "tablet computer"

My old Windows 95 computer (uses the generic image I had as my cell phone background and my old Ubuntu live CD before I got a new internal HD for my desktop; I should change it)

Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (in DOSBox on my desktop)

Not pictured: My desktop in Ubuntu mode (too lazy to reboot), and Windows 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions in DSx86 for my Nintendo DS (it's rather crappy anyways; 16 color mode means I don't use a background).

Yeah. If I tried to take a picture, I'd have to actually use a digital camera because there's no Print Screen button on DSx86. Unless there's a Windows program that can do that. OR!, if anyone knows how to make a small C program that does that with the Win32 API, and it works with the Win16 API, I have Open Watcom and can try to compile it myself (C please).

If you have a DS flashcart though, just google DSx86, download it from that site, and then go to the compatibility wiki, click on "Windows 3 with Multimedia Extensions", and there's a download link for it there.

Also my old Windows XP install. This isn't how it usually, looked, this is just to show how unorganized I was. For a while I just had the icon spacing regular and the default Windows XP background, but when I finally decided to start changing it, I turned the desktop icons off.

My Windows XP computer actually still has one parallel and serial port each. Unfortunately, since Windows NT does not allow writing directly to the hardware, I'm sure almost no software written for them work (since most software would have been before Windows XP). Of course, I use inpout32.dll for my custom parallel port projects, so I don't have to worry about that.

As far as really old computer go, I still haven't found a better use for my Windows 95 computer than.... Windows 95! I've found almost nothing that can deal with only 16MB of RAM and still run smooth. And the one or two I did find, either there's no GUI, or the GUI was made by someone so you can tell it's rather mediocre.

But on the topic of my specific tablet, does anyone have any other ideas/thoughts/answers to my question about it (besides Operating System which I'll decide when the time comes).

Here are some pictures. A few internal, and one external one.

Don't be fooled by the picture, it's not quite THAT dim. It could be a little brighter, but it's easily visible. It's easier to see it looking down on it than looking up on it though.

Like I mentioned in my first post, I was looking at an AP client. No waste of a USB port or the PCI port, and (I'm assuming) no drivers necessary.

Here's a link to one on eBay. It'd easily be small enough to fit inside the case; I'd just have to figure out how to wire it into the ethernet port, but if there's an ethernet cable plugged in, override that.

Case on vs. case off (PCI slot is in lower right corner).

Compare. As you can see, I don't really know if it would fit or not. I'd probably have to measure stuff.

My last thread kinda got overlooked, so let's try this.

ZIP file (7KB)

A tutorial on how to extend all the different data structures within Pokemon Generation I to add new ones. Includes an automatic exe file to do it for you, as well as the C source code. Should be compilable on other system with minimal tweaking.

Combined with my graphics compressor, you should be able to add Pokemon and completely customize them now. The biggest problem though is that only 152 Pokemon fit into the Pokedex's RAM (19 bytes * 8 bits per byte = 152 bits). Once I figure that out, it should work perfectly.

Other things I may need to add to this is bank checking (currently the banks the graphics are in are "hard coded"), and custom palettes (you can select which of the current palette set you want now).

But someone please give it a try!

If you mean one byte, yes. But in Generation I there's only 151 and adding more means a whole lot of repointing. There's a lot more to a single Pokemon than you'd think, even with the generic "base stats data structure" hunking a lot of it together. This program/tutorial is here to streamline the process.

Also, the program itself is updated to make the last byte of the base stats data structure to be the bank you'll find the image in. Thanks to Sawakita for the (simple, but still extremely helpful) ASM. The C source code is also updated, but I haven't put it in the tutorial yet. "Of course, with the program, I was able to automatically put the default bank for each directly in the base stats structure with only two functions and an automatic loop. That would be rather difficult to explain in a tutorial without Adding 151 steps. "

P.S. I believe Ckoolboyman did actually go through the trouble of making Pokemon ID's two bytes for Pokemon Prism, but don't quote me on that.

No, Sawakita released his tool a few hours before I planned on releasing mine.

Yes, any image is possible to be edited. The trainers have to be in the same bank, but the last byte of the base stats data structure controls which bank the front/backpics are in, like I mentioned in my second post. As far as the back pictures, yes, it will still get magnified 2x like the current way the game does it. I plan on fixing this eventually. And in Pokemon there's a lot of free space; you're really unlikely to need to expand the ROM.

Cool, cool, Linux and Androids.

Anyways,

I tried my best guess at measuring (hard to measure the space of the inside of something with the cover on). I'm thinking 3 to 4.5cm tall is all it can be. And it can't stick out more than 2cm past the end of the pins or it'll be in the fan.

Not to mention that if I was gonna use up my PCI slot, I was hoping on a Bluetooth/Wifi combo card, but can't find any that support Windows 98. Not to mention size.

I still like my AP-Client idea, only problem being that I can't figure out how to get a sensor in the ethernet port (or have some sort of physical switch)...

Edit: I figured out how I could do it with the audio output. The term is a "shunt". See here for where I could buy it online. Biggest problem though: shipping from them is $7 flat, no matter how much or little you get (unless you order over a certain weight or something). I can't justify paying $7 for a little $0.85 socket. Now I need to either find one for an ethernet port, or learn how it works and make one myself.

Because I don't know/think I can use the COM port for internet.

And I want to use an AP-Client for wireless and ethernet for wired, in the same plug.

How many times do I need to explain this?

It took up 3 bytes, same amount as when it's empty.

Someone should probably explain how auto_increment works, because there seems to be a lot of misconceptions in this thread. I'd do it, but I'm bad at explaining things.

$50/month sounds rather reasonable to me for someone in need of such a service, but I wouldn't fork that out unless I had as much popularity as say this place. As far as how much it's within reach of this board, how much do the ads usually raise a month? And how much do we currently pay?

URIs must be properly escaped, they must not contain unescaped
characters below U+0021 including the space character and not
above U+007E. Tidy escapes the URI for you as recommended by
HTML 4.01 section B.2.1 and XML 1.0 section 4.2.2. Some user agents
use another algorithm to escape such URIs and some server-sided
scripts depend on that. If you want to depend on that, you must
escape the URI by your own. For more information please refer to
http://www.w3.org/International/O-URL-and-ident.html

The table summary attribute should be used to describe
the table structure. It is very helpful for people using
non-visual browsers. The scope and headers attributes for
table cells are useful for specifying which headers apply
to each table cell, enabling non-visual browsers to provide
a meaningful context for each cell.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
. You may also want to try
"http://www.cast.org/bobby/" which is a free Web-based
service for checking URLs for accessibility.

You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
