Somerville Worries It’s Growing Too Hip
I feel like there’s this trend that once a city amasses enough “hip” twenty-somethings, the local newspaper publishes an article about how “cool” it is. Then they go on about how skinny the jeans are on the dudes that live there, how many “fashionable” hats there are, how many craft beers the bars have and how much the rent is going up. It’s cute and by that I mean really fucking daft. If my partner read this, she’d be convinced that the newspaper is trying to attract more “hipsters” to their little gentrifying towns, which isn't unbelievable since while I read this I admit I kinda felt jealous that I didn't live in Davis Square in my few years in Boston, but I already felt that way before I read this article. I'm sure a number of you chill in “growing ’hoods”. I’ve lived almost exclusively in cities that have been identified as the “hippest cities in America”, so this is nothing new to me. In fact, I used to think articles like this were “amusing” but now they’re getting “tired” because they’re all from the same mold. Has your town been noted for its boutiques by the local newspapers yet? -------------------- Sofi is a Seattle-based freelance artisan poster dedicated to handcrafting the finest in locally sourced commentary for over ten years. ✿ |

You probably didn't really know Portland back when the Pearl district wasn't so nice and SE Division was not yet “cool”. But neither did I. Man, I can't imagine living in any of the small towns near Vancouver, WA. Vancouver is “hip” now? Anaïs Mitchell – “Annmarie”
Right now I'm trying to populate my new iPod while being very strict about what makes the cut, like they have to be music I really enjoy and find really personal and stuff. It's super stressful because I'm basically like asking myself what my music taste says about who I am. If I'm ever the victim of a bizarre murder and they pry my iPod out of my cold dead rigor mortis hands, would I want to be found listening to Bon Iver? That would be such a massive blow to my cred, especially in this post-Grammied Bonnie Bear world. And I wouldn't even be alive to defend it, either. Okay, I could write in my will “she liked Bon Iver before he won the Grammy”, but why bother? -------------------- Sofi is a Seattle-based freelance artisan poster dedicated to handcrafting the finest in locally sourced commentary for over ten years. ✿ |

Originally posted by Gabu A lot of this is happening in San Francisco as far as I'm aware but mostly in the Mission. You can probably find a million articles about how "hip" the Mission is. What's really fun, though, is finding articles that talk about Oakland. Originally posted by Metal_Man88 Maybe. But seriously, you're in Orange county and you're near LA. I kinda doubt seeing an article like this happening in Irvine, though, since apparently it's the seventh richest city in the US for a population over 65,000 and they mostly write articles like this for former working class neighborhoods being taken over by cool kids. Check this out. -------------------- Sofi is a Seattle-based freelance artisan poster dedicated to handcrafting the finest in locally sourced commentary for over ten years. ✿ |

Originally posted by SankyThat's cool and now that you've mentioned it, I'm pretty sure that's how I get by, although I imagine the melodies and the harmonies since they're both pretty important to me. It really depends, though. I used to listen almost exclusively to instrumental music but then I started listening to music with lyrics and I found that sometimes phrases really affected me (like, lately I've been thinking about “you roared into the driveway of our / southwestern ranch-style house” a lot, mostly because I like how he says it) and I'd have to experience them several times. One thing that occurred to me at some point was that music wasn't just about melodies and harmonies and chord progressions—those were the bones—but it was also about soundscapes and textures, and lyrics are an entirely different dimension that also added to the texture both emotionally and aurally. I hope this makes sense. It's like 1AM and I just spent a very long day exploring the town Twin Peaks was filmed in. ![]() Anyway, now it's time for me to find headphones for my iPod. Any suggestions? -------------------- Sofi is a Seattle-based freelance artisan poster dedicated to handcrafting the finest in locally sourced commentary for over ten years. ✿ |

I started a new playthrough of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. This time, I tried to use Peach as little as possible so I’d have to rely on Mallow and items for healing. Once you have Mallow with Super Suit and Jinx Belt and Star Rain, every battle is kind of a joke. The Super Suit + Quartz Charm in general tends to render everything trivial, like, I defeated Magikoopa before he even summoned anything because Bowser’s timed normal attack was doing like 600 a turn and I beat the entire Axem Rangers crew over the course of like two turns through Star Rain.
I don’t see why Mallow is considered a "bad character" when there are so many elemental weaknesses in this game and most of the battles tend to involve groups (which he controls really well). Everything is weak to thunder or ice. Mario: Lazy Shell ★ Lazy Shell ★ Attack Scarf Coins are like super-abundant at the end of the game, too, so it’s easy to stock up on KerokeroCola and plus there are just so many battles that automagically heal you after you fight them as well as recovery mushroom thingies in the ? treasure chests. I used an inn like twice. ![]() The argument could be made, though, that at the end of the game, every character has the potential for really good crowd control and that’s cool! but if you make that argument that Geno is way better, I’ll tell you that you’re wrong because Mallow’s the only character with a 2FP all-enemy attack that hits elemental weaknesses. If I play again, I’m going to experiment with a magical Bowser. -------------------- Sofi is a Seattle-based freelance artisan poster dedicated to handcrafting the finest in locally sourced commentary for over ten years. ✿ |
