+1 for Escape Velocity, especially Nova. That one's my favourite by far. The only problem is there's no legitimate way to acquire the game anymore -- Ambrosia was never a sizeable developer+publisher and they've basically gone completely under at this point.

26 C (78 F), clear skies, sun shining. And I've now just realized I didn't open any windows before I left for work this morning so I'm going to head home and holy fuck it's going to be hot in my apartment.

e: I am jealous of you Australians and your warm winters. I would love to move there if it weren't for the murderous wildlife, poor internet, and the fact that the left side of the road is the direction of travel.

The back half of this summer was "the sky is brown and the whole province smells like a wildfire and oh god I can't breathe".

I'm looking forward to not having to deal with that for another 10 months.

I have recurring dreams, which is really odd, because generally they aren't frequently recurring. Tonight I had a dream that I haven't had in several *years*, but it went more or less exactly as I remember it.

They solved it.

Worth the $120/month I think.

Pacific Northwest summers are fantastic. Average highs of 20-24 C, rarely above 30 C, and still a bit of rain now and then. I'd take that year round if I could.

I need to pick up a good multimeter and a mini DIN-8 cable so I can fabricate a classic Macintosh RS-422 to RS-232 downgrade cable and post from the Macintosh Classic II sitting on my desk.

The helium-filled Seagates are usually shingled magnetic recording (SMR) drives so they're a bit slower but have incredible density and reliability.

The WD EasyStore or WD Elements external drives have either a WD Red or the HGST equivalent inside them, so you can get one of those on the cheap and rip the enclosure off for a decent, reliable hard drive.

e: HGST is owned by WD and OEMs most of their high quality drives.

There's no infrastructure that supports owning an electric vehicle around here if you live in an apartment, and lol at the concept of buying a townhouse starting at 400 fucking thousand dollars.

China's fossil fuel CO2 emissions last year were equivalent to 3 billion passenger vehicles. Fucking Bitcoin's CO2 footprint is equivalent to 6 million passenger vehicles. There are about a billion passenger vehicles worldwide.

Replacing gasoline and diesel engines with electric ones would remove the direct carbon output of the vehicles but it would increase the energy requirement from the worldwide electrical capacity significantly, and guess how much of that is being generated by fossil fuels?

capitalism dot txt. Absolute shame that a couple relatively minor accidents caused by bad design and poor materials handling totally smashed the future of nuclear power.

Also, their claim of "we've not ended up in a world where everyone has a SIP URI or Jabber ID on their business card" is kind of strange from my point of view as my business card actually has my SIP URI and Jabber ID on it, and I know plenty of organizations whose email addresses are also valid SIP URIs and/or Jabber IDs for those users. The question is whether or not those SIP domains accept calls through random gateways and those Jabber domains have open XMPP federation.

nb: I don't maintain our collab infrastructure at work so I don't actually know if you can just dial my SIP URI from anywhere. I think we have open XMPP federation though.

this is a really really weird thing for me because I've known and been friends with trans people for half my life at this point, both on and off the internet. when this thread showed up I put myself under the umbrella of "every now and then" because it was usually less of an actively thinking about it and more of a "well if it happened it wouldn't be bad" and sometimes a "it'd be neat if it did happen".

last night I was casually browsing the internet and stumbled upon /r/transpassing and thought to myself longingly at several points, "gosh, I wish I could look like her", and it started kinda falling together in my head maybe a bit? I don't know. it'd be nice I guess. another thing I've wondered more recently that I never used to was "how far could I transition without anyone noticing" and maybe that's like, a step or something that puts me over that boundary of "every now and then"? I don't know

fuck this is difficult.

Comcast broke one of their Newark edge routers connecting to an IX in France a few nights ago. 15-20% packet loss for anyone on Comcast accessing datacenters in Paris. They didn't fix it for close to a day and a half.

As someone who helps maintain a game server in Paris with ~1000 daily users worldwide I have to say fuck Comcast

I'm telling my boss in an hour that I want to move back to Vancouver and work from the office there aaaaaaaaaaaaaa

(turns out even for introverted people, moving somewhere where you know exactly zero people and where the general cultural climate is repeatedly described as "newlyweds and nearly-deads" due to its composition of young couples and retirees is NOT exactly good for one's mental state)
