Oh, this is a fun one.

Linux is a horrendous pile of hacks curated by awful people and if the Year of the Linux Desktop never comes we're better off without it.
The Free Software community is actively harmful to its own goals. Open source has a large number of terrible people but it's not unified so there's no one big group of bad.
Windows 10 is better than Windows 7. Anyone still using Windows 7 because they're angry about upgrading deserves whatever hellvirus they get the day after end of support.
Modern design languages are not unilaterally bad.
PowerShell is really nice for administering systems.
Cryptocurrency should be illegal.

OS X is neat because it's officially a Certified Unix and it doesn't blow (contrast AIX and Solaris, and I guess HP-UX and SCO if those still exist in any capacity). Certified Unix just means you have a lot of money to blow on Big Iron dickwaving though.

OpenBSD is my favourite Unix-like.

Yep! It uses the same backend as the -AppxPackage PowerShell cmdlets. probably not unpopular on this forum, but generally unpopular everywhere non-tech: i don’t like 16:9 screens.

I haven't owned one in a very long time but I got to use a pair of 1920x1200 screens while I was working on-site for a customer the week before Christmas and it was absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately they're so much more expensive than 1920x1080 and I don't even know if anyone makes 1920x1200 high refresh rate monitors...

I bought a Pixel 2 recently after years of using a Nexus 5. The battery lasts three days of use as opposed to twelve hours. It's nuts.

I don't know where all you folks are getting a dozen notifications a second out of. I get a notification for any incoming messages or emails and that's it. I think there's three or four apps I've turned notifications off for altogether because if you get tired of seeing notifications you can just do that unilaterally for an app.

It had the most descriptive bluescreens of the VxD-based Windows releases. That makes it the best one.

(The best 90s OS is OpenBSD 2.6. Fight me. )

Chicken fajitas and a beer -- Granville Island Brewing Lions Winter Ale. It's one of my favourite beers and I'm sad that its season is almost at an end; it's only available from October through February.

It's 18 or 19 depending on province here. 19 in my province.

I bought a 750mL of Canadian whisky tonight. Fairly local stuff too. I have not yet opened it but it's cork-plugged and that is all kinds of neat.

Zaat is one of the worst films I've ever encountered. I highly recommend watching the RedLetterMedia review of it instead of the film itself.

I have now opened that whisky.

It's a solid rye with a bit of an apple aftertaste to it. Kind of Granny Smith esque. 92 proof, aged eight years. It certainly has an unabashed spice to it, reminiscent of a dark spiced rum. It's plenty good for sipping, and I imagine it'll be good as a mixing whisky as well. Possibly something to augment my usual rum and coke.

Gibson's Finest Bold. Turns out I was wrong, it's actually from Ontario. I was thinking of a different distillery that's *in* Gibsons, BC.

The Simpsons is still at least vaguely entertaining.

It's not explicitly "tune in for this show which is very good" like it was from seasons 3-11 but the newer stuff still gets a chuckle out of me.

I'd go with The Simpsons.

Overall I rather enjoy Blizzard's approach to loot boxes. It's all cosmetic, there's no trading market, no cost to unlock boxes, and you can reroll.

They added a cash shop a while back to WoW that has two aspects. Cosmetic pet and mounts, and WoW Tokens, which you can buy and sell for gold in-game and are worth one month's subscription or the equivalent in Battle.Net account balance. This has dramatically fucked with RMT gold sellers as well as giving people with a veritable battalion of max-level characters the ability to pay for their subscription with in-game currency instead of real money. Hell, I know a lot of people who used gold to buy tokens and use the converted balance to pre-order the next expansion.

The key things here are that the loot boxes don't have keys and the loot and microtransactions are bind-to-account cosmetic stuff. There's no gambling market to be had here.

I haven't actually watched a whole WWE event in probably close to 15 years.

It's fun to watch some of the clips but the camera work is just horrendous these days. It feels like it's nothing but smash zoom, shakycam, rapid cuts, and like the camera operators are mimicking the moves as they happen.

That all being said I'd probably watch a modern event if it involved smelling what The Rock is cooking.

In the post-Oscar hype I got around to seeing some of the nominated and award-winning films.

The Shape of Water wasn't good. Generally when you do a romantic drama you set up at least something resembling a plot that would allow for the circumstances of the drama and the romance to happen. This film just leans heavily on the fact that it's vaguely fantasy (I think people are calling it "low fantasy"? though I thought that was code for "Arthurian style medieval fiction, without the proliferation of magical elements") to just say "eh, well, this happens."

The ending throws away the low part of "low fantasy" entirely and it turns out we've been watching Guillermo Del Toro channeling the Brothers Grimm and then trying to turn it around with some Disney at the end.

Maybe I just don't "get" it.

Get Out should have won best picture. I didn't really feel that the score was all that great, but I guess it was the least meh out of the nominees in that category (if it weren't *original* score, Baby Driver could have and would have taken that hands down).
