I had a fire/appliances inspection today so I spent most of the week thus far after work cleaning my apartment! This has been a fascinating experience

Considering I'm still able to post from work they didn't seem to care about the totally-not-a-datacentre in my hall closet.

big. cans.

I actually don't have any audiophile gear. At home I use a pair of Logitech G430 headphones with the USB dongle functioning only as a DAC. When I'm walking or at work I have a pair of chinesium bluetooth headphones that cost $40 but definitely sound better than $40. My car has a nice bluetooth sound system stock as well.

I can't stand in-ears. I would probably have to have some expensive ear canal modelling done if I were going to use in-ear monitors, but that's way too much time and money for me.

I also have a Google Home Mini that gets some use as a speaker when I'm cleaning my apartment or working on hardware or anything where headphones won't work well or I need an ear free.

Big three for me:

- Get my hobby OS project sufficiently well built to have a port of LibreSSL (at least libcrypto, though libssl and libtls would be rad).
- Renew my Cisco certifications, certify with Nutanix and maybe VMware, so I can get the promotion I'm eyeing at work.
- Find romance. This is somehow more difficult than the "write OS from scratch and port TLS to it" one.

Dark Souls is neither difficult nor terribly good and FromSoft has spent way too much time and effort on those games compared to stuff fans actually want.

Nintendo needs fresh blood running the show so they stop coming up with terrible ideas like selling a pack of cardboard for $69.99. Their output has been at best decent and average a solid meh since the back half of the Wii's lifespan.

World of Warcraft is still good and has only improved with content and gameplay revisions to fit the modern MMO environment. Vanilla was a hot mess in retrospect and while I'm looking forward to the Classic remaster project there's gonna be a whole bunch of minds trapped behind rose-tinted glasses that are going to straight up explode two weeks into its lifespan.

Todd Howard and the chucklefucks behind Bethesda need to stop re-releasing Skyrim every year and actually put some goddamn effort into making a new Elder Scrolls game. Skyrim Together looks so damn good and it's going to make Skyrim a fun game again like it was before the half dozen re-releases, and I'm genuinely worried that Bethesda will C&D it within a few months of release because it'll hurt their ability to keep re-releasing the game.

I put an SSD in my relatively old now ThinkPad T520 (2012) and that alone made it usable by 2017/2018 standards. It's literally a miracle upgrade to extend the life of a machine by another few years.

I want a stack of late 80s/early 90s computer audio and synth products. An MT-32 and an SC-88 Pro are at the top of my list. I'd also love a Gravis Ultrasound MAX, and, uh, I guess a working PC old enough to slot it into. I've got nothing left with ISA slots.

What's that Onion article they repost several times a year? "No way to prevent this, says only nation where this regularly happens"?

At the risk of invoking an argument, god damn am I ever glad we do gun control right in Canada. Firearms classification, licensing based on classification, regular background checks, a significant waiting period on licensing, mandatory safety courses and exams. Handguns and other restricted have additional restrictions on storage and transport and require a license that has an additional safety course behind it and the RCMP conducts interviews with the references you put on your application.

I can count the number of school shootings that have happened here in the past 40 years on one hand.

Mostly because I'm still used to the rest of the internet where horrid arguments spawn from opinions on gun control.

It's hard to find a workable solution for America because no matter what you do you're going to need to send in the National Guard to take two hundred million guns by force and a lot of people are going to die. I guess the best to do is ban them, recycle the mass production crap, and send the interesting stuff to museums or export them to countries that aren't trash fires. And hope the National Guard has modern body armour.

Thinking about it, there could be some actually really scientifically useful benefits from recycling guns. There's probably a lot of low-background steel to be salvaged from most guns made before 1945.

Also, probably more controversial, but we should lock all the NRA lobbyists in Guantanamo-style concrete cells with their favourite personal firearms and one bullet.

I played Donkey Kong Country Returns with a more to use the controller instead of motion controls recently and there were multiple times where I maxed out the life counter at 99. I used a lot of them but spare lives were so readily accessible that it might as well just not have a life counter at all.

One of my favourite platformers is VVVVVV, which is incredibly difficult but uses checkpoints on every screen and instant respawn instead of lives. The checkpoints are also sometimes used in the level designs as puzzles.

Starbound shows a lot of signs of being negatively affected by scope creep. Not to the extent of, say, Star Citizen, but there's enough that it hurts the game quite a bit. That and its original release being really quite crap.

Ooh, there's one.

Star Citizen is a fascinating failure of mismanaged funding, scope creep, and development process, and the only way it'll ever reach a quarter of what it's set out to do is if a studio with some semblance of patience and understanding of game development buys Cloud Imperium Games and fires Chris Roberts, the same way that Microsoft Game Studios saved Freelancer from development hell in the early 2000s after five years of being stuck in an eternal design stage and Chris Roberts almost running out of money.

Regrettably many of the people who play competitive games are gaping assholes, so I don't really play competitive games anymore.

The big problem is that America has a deeply broken culture overall, and the gun problem makes it so much easier for the murderous part of the culture to show up in international news feeds every few days. We didn't have many massacres here before the two or three gun control acts we have were put into place. We haven't even had one since we loosened a few firearms laws. We're just not a country with a violent culture.

This is kind of morbid, but I genuinely wonder what America would be trying to kill each other with if suddenly there were no more guns.

I should point out that in the case of America, I do sincerely believe that as long as there's rampant violence, little to no gun control, and the right wing is arming itself with intent to defend their hatred against leftists, the left needs to be ready to arm the fuck up in self-defence.

I don't think a bad guy with a gun is stopped by a good guy with a gun, but a bad guy suppressing schools of thought with a gun isn't going to be stopped by people from those schools standing firm and vowing to resist the bullets.

The solution is to get rid of guns but that's not going to happen in an America that is degenerating into massively-supported neoconservative authoritarianism with legions of people who would commit violent atrocities to defend that degeneration.

Designate the NRA as a terrorist organization and use that to arrest any politician who sides with them or takes their money. Flip the House and Senate blue. Start enacting gun legislation.

The NRA has been lobbying against legislation intended to prevent massacres and hate crimes under the guise of personal freedom, but actually for the purposes of lining their own pockets and propping up an industry that produces tools designed to kill. Their supporters include political advocates for suppression of minorities, supporters of forever wars in developing countries that severely damage those countries' ability to develop, and alt-right "anti-antifa" groups that open carry military-style hardware to counter peaceful demonstrations.

They are an organization that works by spreading terror and misinformation. They should be treated as such.

I am certain no one who values a society not degenerating into conservative authoritarianism would miss them.

e: Also reminder that the NRA supported California implementing gun control when the California branch of the Black Panther Party started arming themselves for self-defence and for defending equal availability to voting.
