| Randomly came across a YouTube channel that's been uploading early VHS footage from the San Fransisco Rush arcade games, including the cancelled Hot Rod Rebels. Stuff that was meant for internal use for work-in-progress versions of the games.
Here's the YouTube playlist. |

| So, somebody named Robert Hoskin recently uploaded footage he took following EGM staffers around a couple conventions in Japan. I found out about the videos in a post on Protodude's Rockman Corner about the footage of an early build of Rockman 4, specifically the scrapped sphinx boss!
I made a timestamp megapost like this a few months ago for a video of E3 1995, so I figured I'd try making one about these too. The Gaming Adventures of Edward Semrad. ( Part 1 of 3 - with Martin Alessi ) Consumer Soft Group trade show (March 24, 1991) There's not many lingering closeup shots of games in this one but here's a few quick timestamps. | Ah, nice work! It does seem odd they would use English text for the intro here.
The Berlin Wall also uses (grammatically dubious) English text for its intro. Weird. (Also I edited the post with the things Diving pointed out.) |

| I'm making a thread for this because it's full of fun stuff to talk about.
An old Sega Channel development disc from 1996 has recently been released (Hidden Palace link). It's full of source files, several menu test ROMs, ...and a couple Daggerfall demos for some reason. But there's a bunch of other interesting stuff too...
First of all, two "new" Mega Drive games!? Presumably these were exclusive to the Japanese Sega Channel and I'm pretty sure they never seen the light of day since. I can barely find any mention of these online. "NYUSHI.BIN" (入試直前チェック難問奇門危機解決) is some sort of educational quiz game. "PLANET.BIN" (プラネットメッセージクイズ) is... some sort of astronomy/astrology-related thing. I've already made a page for one of them. (Also, a copy of that mysterious "Game Can Special" is in there too.)
Second, three SC-exclusive versions of Primal Rage! ("PRIMALCN.SGA", "PRIMALRG.SGA", "PRIMALTD.SGA") These have been documented a little on the game page. Third... a potentially early version of Yuu Yuu Hakusho: Makyou Toitsusen? There are references to a "YU_YU" file on the disc... the problem is the actual BIN file isn't there. But the "GI" folder holds files that are... based on the ROMs? I don't know if they're compressed, truncated, corrupted or what but they don't boot in an emulator. But the files do have (messy unformatted) ROM headers and the one in "YU_YU.GI" is dated a month earlier than the final version and the "GM" code is copied from Gunstar Heroes. I don't know what could be done with this. Fourth, after comparing the rest of the ROMs of retail-released games with existing ROM dumps, the only other one that's different seems to be Kyuukai Douchuuki (KYUUKAI.BIN). No idea what's different but it's mostly some changes in the first half of the ROM.
So yeah, a whole lot of goodies in here. |

| So it can potentially be salvaged? I wouldn't mind looking at it since it's one of my fav MD games. I have no idea how to go about decompressing it though.
I'm guessing these "GI" files might be what was actually sent through the service to cut down on loading/transfer times? Also I started making a list of games listed in the menu ROMs just for the hell of it. |

Yeeess, thank you!! This really is an early version of Makyou Toitsusen.
At a glance this is the same version I made a prerelease page for a while ago. Very nice! EDIT: Oh my god... track 80 (and many others) in the sound test is SMOOTH CRIMINAL ripped from Michael Jackson's Moonwalker... what the hell lmao |

| Okay so I started a page for the YYH proto. It's over here.
There are a whole bunch of unused graphics in the game that were cleaned out of the final release. Initially I assumed these were random things cut from the game, but upon closer inspection, these are actually from different games. Seems like this build was written over top of other stuff.
At the end of Kuwabara's tile set seems to be a spindash animation. I'm guessing this is Sonic because in the next graphics bank...
...it's Tails! Specifically his overworld sprites from Sonic Crackers! These are at the end of Yusuke's tile set.
Next is this at the end of Hiei's bank. I can't really tell what this is supposed to be, at least with the palettes I have going...
This is at the end of Sensui's bank. No idea what this is from but it's a little guy.
More little guy at the end of Jin's bank. |

I managed to eke out something resembling human in that one blob of graphics and it's...
... Shiva and Ash from Bare Knuckle III. Also the new Hidden Palace page for the game says it has data for (a prototype version of) J.League Pro Striker 2, and sure enough... ![]() |

Also the background Famicoms and hidden Game Boy in Junk Man's stage have been removed. Probably worth documenting as a revisional difference. |

| Minor bump of nothingness, just some random observations regarding this old YouTube video uploaded in 2007. (There's also a Part 2 from 2011 with news blurbs and stuff I didn't do comparisons for.)
"0395DEMO.BIN" seems to be (mostly) the same menu seen in "Month 1". The video has Golden Axe II in the "The Arcade" menu, which seems to be missing from the ROM though for some reason. "1095DEMO.BIN" seems to be mostly the same as "Month 2". The video shows a "comic soon" message for "Express Games", while the ROM shows the list of games. "0995DEMO.BIN" seems to be the same as "Month 3". No discrepancies I noticed. --- EDIT: Also, just to make certain, I decompressed all the GI and SA files and compared them. They're all identical to each other. Then I compared them to the BIN files already on the disc... and they're also identical. ... That is except for "SCMENU". All three files (BIN/GI/SA) are located in the "GI" folder for some reason. The GI/SA are identical but those are different from the BIN... I'm not sure in what way, but they don't boot in an emulator (no headers) so I'm not really sure what they even are. |

| Just noticed another video was uploaded a few weeks ago. Not much closeup footage but there's some other stuff running in the background. Still nice to see nonetheless.
The Gaming Adventures of Edward Semrad - At 10th CSG Gaming Show in Ikebukuro. 6:00 - Shadow of the Beast (Wondermega) 9:55 - Super Double Dragon (SNES) 10:25 - Phalanx (SNES) 10:58 - Blashit (SNES) [different HUD layout it seems] 12:31 - King Salmon (MD) You can see a Sega R360 cabinet in action around 21:30. EDIT: Uh... that's supposed to say Blaz-eon lol... |

| Well here's something amusing I just discovered.
The version of Comix Zone released on Virtual Console in the US was actually a prototype lol. The ROM is just called "ComixZone_USA.SGD" but it's identical to this Jun 9, 1995 prototype on Hidden Palace. The European and Japanese ROMs are identical to the final releases, so they got that right at least. |

| Nintendo announced back in January it was shutting down Miitomo on May 9th. I know, it wasn't very popular, and it's not really a "game", but I figure Nintendo's first smartphone app is worth some sort of archiving effort.
The majority of customization assets (clothes/wallpapers/flooring/etc.) are stored on Nintendo's servers and are downloaded to the app as needed. So once the app shuts down, all of that will probably disappear too. I used a packet capturer to try and sniff out where the data is coming from. The model assets seem to come from zip files stored on "download-cdn.miitomo.com". ("api.miitomo.com" is another URL where... stuff comes from.) Here's some samples:
(Replace the "android" with "ios" for the iOS assets.) I've tried manually downloading stuff by going through the numbers but, um... there's a lot. The shirt numbers alone go up to at least 1000. But a lot of those numbers just don't exist? For example, "headwear0066" through "headwear0099" don't seem to work... but "headwear0100" does... but other numbers going up from there don't... but "headwear0211" does... etc. It'd be nice to be able to just crawl the whole thing, but I've gotten 403 errors trying that. - - - The textures are PVR 3.0, ETC1 encoded (via GerbilSoft). I managed to open them with something called PVRTexTool, but there might be something else out there. Here's some random examples: - - - And here's some other random URLs I picked up:
And one that might particularly be TCRF related: http://download-cdn.miitomo.com/native/20180125111639/android/v2/unused-assets_csv.zip |

Nice. (Also, welcome!) I actually just found the manifest last night. It's quite helpful. There's also one for iOS:
http://download-cdn.miitomo.com/native/20180125111639/manifests/v2_20180405_3_ios/manifest.json einstein95 parsed out the links and apparently tossed them into ArchiveBot, so... I guess they'll be appearing on the Internet Archive in some form.
I might download them too for the heck of it. |

| Argh... I was just considering downloading them too. At least the one with the Rockman 4 footage was saved. It was probably the most significant one.
Metalman put together a nice prerelease page based on the footage. Even got some stitched-together maps going. |

A while back I was looking at the manual scans for the games on the NES Mini that Nintendo uploaded. Here are some Zelda things I noticed.
In this infamous screenshot from the English manual, if you zoom in, you can see the remnants of the Japanese text, which was presumably inked over. (Note the text in the JP version is right-justified, starting just above the old man.)
And in the Japanese manual, if you look closely at the pictures of the sprites, you can see remnants of the grid for whatever they used to display them. These are some of the more obvious examples. Notice the "ABC" in that generic NES font along the top and left sides of the sprites. |
