Don't think I ever have and ever will meet any Jul`ers. It's a long swim to the United States, hehe.

This.

Although if you came to England, I'd be happy to meet up with you
I was in London last February. Great city, think I'll go there again sometimes.

I'd say message boards. They're still my favorite means of communication online, but unfortunately they've kind of lost their magic as soon as 'social networks' came into the picture. I use MSN and AIM too, the latter not so much.

That.

I'm actually getting used to it. The only thing I still don't like is how Google creates a page overlay when you click on an image and land on the website it belongs to. Closing that overlay is somehow delayed, too. :/

I've never really been a fan of a phone with a bazillion gadgets. Especially touchscreens I don't 'trust'. I have the LG Crystal phone from when it first came out, and it became unresponsive and buggy after 2 months. I just want a simple phone to use as an actual phone. I'll use a PDA for everything else (organizer, calendar, etc.).

I actually don't have this game in spite of the fact I totally want to. And I have my reasons for it. I just know that when I'll get it, I'll be totally addicted for years, my discipline will reach point zero and all my work will stay unfinished.

Both my parents are quite skilled with the computer, in terms of usage. My father even knows his fair share about hardware. Saves me a lot of time.

I dropped out of college quite early because of lack of interest. At the time I was still attending college, the only IT related education here in Holland was a very general system administration related one. Nothing related to programming / software- and/or web development which was what I was really interested in.

I've been a professional web developer for years now, last 3 years even as a project leader. I started out with simple PHP and sloppy HTML way back, around 2000 or so. Up to date I have experience with pretty much all techniques necessary to make a decent website / application, and I can work in many programming languages. The only thing I have actual certification for, is ASP.NET 3.5.

For the rest, I'm great at cooking. I started with simple spaghetti when I was 12 years old. Nowadays I can cook pretty much everything.

I was actually on the IRC channel of Acmlm's board, when someone said that a plain flew into the WTC and I thought he was kidding. Until I switched the TV on.

Yeah, so, thread title pretty much describes topic context. Social networks will never beat good ol' boards if you ask me (heck, they even mimic 'em ), but still, I've become quite hooked on them a few years ago. I use Facebook, LinkedIn and a Dutch Facebook-ish social network called Hyves.

What about you?

Twitter's a social network too, yeah. And I have one, in fact. Though I just have it to claim the name, I don't actually "tweet". I don't like Twitter.

Other than fun and 'social', I have to say LinkedIn is actually useful. I got a bunch of projects through connections in LinkedIn.

I don't like any low fat / fat free, low sugar / sugar free, low carb 'feelgood' products. If I want to have a nice, greasy burger, I KNOW how horrifying, unhealthy and deadly it is in terms of healthiness and fat / carb amounts and I'm willing to take the risk. I don't need the government, companies or other people taking those precautions for me.

A lot of annoyances mentioned in this thread are matters of usability and accessibility. It's amazing how many web designers, programmers and web masters boast about how their website's source code is 'XHTML compliant' and uses 'valid CSS' (only syntax-wise and not logically, of course), but have totally no regard for stuff like the WCAG or WAI guidelines.

I never understood why so many board systems require you to log in to view user profiles.

It's a certain kind of privacy. I for one don't like board profiles and such popping up in search results on Google because I once registered at the place. Even though I don't visit any 'weird' websites, I don't want people to be able to see where ever I go. Of course, restricting the whole profile / board to registered and logged in users is a little drastic. Using something as simple as a robots.txt file is already sufficient to prevent the majority of crawlers / spyders from indexing specific parts of your website.

Except people can tell from your posts, unless you want to have those hidden, too.

The idea is plainly retarded either way. Use a robots.txt file if you don't want people searching your forum's profiles, or (for the users) just leave your profile with stuff people can't trace back to you.

Human readers can tell whether it's you or not, reading the posts. The thing is, people need to end up at the forum in the first place to do so. Profile pages tend to mention 'real names', causing crawlers and spyders to index the concerning page, in the end making the real name actually search-able for the whole Internet.

Which is why the bots are told not to index the page and you don't put your real name there if you don't want people to know.

That's why I mentioned the usage of a robots.txt file in my earlier post. There's META tags to point crawlers / bots whether they may index / follow the page, too.

True, but all the majors earch engines respect the robot.txt and META rules. I don't care about any unknown crawler / spyder indexing these kinds of pages; most people will just use Google, Bing and Yahoo (or other known search engines) for their searches and won't come across any exotic / unknown search engine easily.

Of course, if you just don't want to be found by your real name, don't use it anywhere. I'm always very careful about where I go and what information I put up. I once went to a financial forum where another user quoted a post from my blog (where I used my real name). In no time, my full name was searchable on Google and everyone that'd search my full name, ended up at that forum. Took me weeks to get rid of that.

Posted on 09-28-10 09:34:15 AM, in CSS: Prevent text from overlapping positioned element (last edited by Leroy at 09-28-10 06:37 AM) Link
This is what 'container' and 'wrapper' divs are for. Create a 'top most' container div with the background image (positioned bottom right), a div 'underneath' that with a min-height property identical to the image's height, and in that div underneath, put all those right-floating divs and your post text.
