You can also try Linux Mint; based on Ubuntu, but actually does something unique. Okay, fine, Ubuntu has its artwork and installer, but otherwise it's the same old GNOME.

Mac if you want a working operating system out of the box; or you can just get a Dell with Ubuntu preinstalled.

Yeah, if your experience is from 1998 where Linux took way more than 10 minutes to install (and way more effort than clicking some buttons), and Mac OS 9 was truly made for idiots. There is no valid claim on either operating system from today.

But yeah, before going and installing some OS, it might just be better to make sure it actually, you know, works.

Before trolling against other operating systems, you might want to update your facts. Thank you.

One computer doesn't mean that it is broken for everybody. Do you really think a million Ubuntu users have the operating system because it won't work on their systems?

I've told you before to be more careful on what you buy. Contrary to popular belief, it is not difficult to buy open and supported hardware, I've done it for a very long time. Hell, these days, it's getting increasingly harder to build a computer with proprietary hardware. The main thing is to buy wireless cards from Taiwain (more specifically, try to buy from Taiwainese companies, not importing ), and avoid NVIDIA/ATI for video cards (last one might not be easy if you're a heavy gamer).

Most American wireless card manufacturers tend to keep their hardware a secret... it makes it difficult to support such hardware in a free operating system (OpenBSD pretty much has the best support for wireless cards of all the free OSes, but it's not a likely system for your average desktop user). They do this to protect "trade secrets" and such nonsense. On the other hand, Taiwanese manufacturers pretty much need to publish open documentation in order to stay in the market; as this makes it trivial to support in free operating systems (such as Linux), they are fairly popular for these platforms.

Well Kas' point was that using Apple's hardware+software combo, you have none of the support issues you may run into while using Linux. Kind of a moot point since the hardware and software are provided by the same vendor; they better support their own hardware else they'll be dead.

UAC. Most users disable it. Not to mention, Microsoft's own knowledge database tells you that it's completely optional to implement in your own programs; aka, viruses can legitimately bypass any UAC prompts.

Yeah Pentium 4 is massive failure and whoever decided to put it in a laptop should be shot.

Go run memtest86 on your computer to rule out bad RAM.

95 C or F? Mine's normally around 102~113° F doing nothing. Max load can bring it around 140~156° F.

It's not uncommon for hardware sensors to be completely inaccurate (once I had a reading of 220°F... obviously wrong, any CPU would hard shut off long before that). Sometimes it's a permanent issue, sometimes fixed by shutting down and booting again. Honestly, I can't imagine any single application being "better" at it than any other—they all read it from the same place.

There's nothing that can't be broken by bots... at least if you still expect normal people to use the service. (If you have a seemingly random image made by some formula and expect to have a solution to be entered... you'll probably both avoid normal users and bots).

I like the idea of CAPTCHAs, even if they're not perfect. The general idea is that the image is too difficult to read by a bot, but not too difficult to read by a human. It is a very hard line to walk on, especially if your current CAPTCHA has been broken by someone and implemented into bots (remember that the software doesn't operate on magic, somebody has to actually code them).

Didn't I already say most of that?

You also seem to forget that bots != magic. If someone were determined enough, it wouldn't be hard to have them operate specially for this site. Don't fill in the hidden homepage field, etc.
