I live in the GTM+1 time zone, so it is already 01/01/2008, 20:42 h. Happy new year!

Didn't go to see the fireworks at the Brandenburg Gate as expected, since the area was overfilled and blocked for more visitors (1,2+ million people), so we just went to a bigger street where other people were standing, and when it got 0:00, it was fun to watch, with some beer among us. The rest consisted of playing card games, ultrastar as usual and getting to sleep until recently. So I don't like usual parties, as 'parties' are mostly defined going to clubs and such, too

I don't use Google's in-built tools as well, although the site is my the homepage in all installed browsers. The only feature I use comes from Firefox itself:
When you highlight something and right-click it, there is an entry which allows you to search for that particular word/phrase/etc. in the currently selected (search) engine. In a new Firefox profile, you have that small search field right from the address bar, where you also can switch those pages or add something like Youtube and other ones.

Pretty neat for me, as I don't need to open up a new tab and copy that word into Google, but can do it nearly automatically.

Posted on 01-03-08 02:03:39 PM, in Need some info on a trojan... Link
There is not much information about it, but at least better than nothing:
http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/trojproxyax.html

I strongly advise to format the hard drive, along from your (clean) computer download SP2 and burn it onto a CD. You might be able to remove the antivirus on the infected comp by using an up-to-date antivirus, along with Hijack This, but there is a very high chance that particular trojans (hello agobot and phatbot) screwed the entire operating system, changed programs and so on to use other backdoors .... I doubt a virus scanner or any program can kill such a complex trojan.
Backup anything important, if possible put it into a neutral environment, such as an old computer disconnected from the internet, scan/try to desinfect that stuff.

Since you reinstall SP2 offline, there is much less risk in getting something while normally downloading the SP2 and all following updates via Windows Upate (which requires Internet Explorer ).

Then I'm toss in an old one in too. Just explains how the "check if all characters are living"-routine went off. I was still too weak to defeat Indalecio, in turn I let him do really nice things like Divine Comedy, Explode, Noah and Earthquake in succession on my party.
While Claude was near death and everybode else dead, he used a Ressurection Mist item to revive Rena, he immediately died, few seconds later Indalecio did his aura ring attack, seconds of waiting - full HP for Rena finally! "Destroyed-", game over.

I wonder if this beats Kaizo Mario World in terms of diffituly, especially the later stages are like a playable 'Mind Saw movies' for the players in terms of sadism
As for the frustated player ... yeah, known thing. Actually it all depends on the comments of the player.

Posted on 01-12-08 12:14:17 PM, in DRM Mk. II: The Watermark (last edited by Surlent at 01-12-08 09:15 AM) Link
This week I had to hold a lecture with four other people, we also mentioned the problem DRM [not in-depth as it was not the main object, though] and Amazon's approach to sell DRM-free MP3s, but these also have watermarks included (which I am fine with, too - at least no DRM or any bad file format which require specific audio players and special mobile MP3 players to work with.

Funny thing, I hope this thing fails. Watermarks are usually okay, but the mentioned problems like CD-players unable to play this file could show up ...
Other things were not mentioned. Compare the prices for a single (even if it is DRM-free) track or album from iTunes and the like - now go into a store and check the prices of a CD. You get no jewel case, no fany booklet, no nice artwork and no printed CD.
If this doesn't change or digital music will be siginificantly cheaper (they SAVE a lot of money for not printing CDs and the like ...), this will cease to exist or the consumers simply will be pissed of even more, using programs like Soulseek much more ...

It seems to occur rarely indeed, as an older youtube video shows. Despite the music being hihger pitched (bad dump/ROM ?), the same sound occurs at 0:47, also while the player swings Mario's Raccoon Tail immediately after the 1UP symbol appears.
Funny thing these small things never got explained until now, though.

Separate windows are great if you have space and/or a high desktop resolution. If you run 1024 x 768 or even the next lower one (trust me, there are still people using/stuck to 800 x 600 pixels), many smaller windows instead of one actually take more space than saving it.

Of course, a possibility to toggle single- and multi-window mode might be great, but I think it is way too far to discuss something like this that early ...

Basically I heard only bad opinions of friends having Visa (majority of them with fairly new, both cheap and expensive machines) preinstalled. Of course if a laptop came with tiny 512 Megs of RAM and a Vista Home , that cannot be much of objective criticism, but otherwise it is driver-problems mostly.

Otherwise I'd have nothing against Vista itself, I just have to second chungy's post: If those flaws get fixed, possibily in a future Service Pack or even better as early as possible, I'd change my opinion about Vista immediately

Wintersun - Wintersun, the only album I own from them (their only one?), this thing really is a master-piece if you are fond of Melodic Death Metal, especially the various faster tracks ... like "Battle against time".
Currently Mega Man 3 Wily Metal OC ReMix" by Gux is running. When it comes to video game remixes, this is my absolute favourite piece (still, this thing was released in 2001!). It is a superb remix of Wily Stage 3 and 4 from said game ...

I hope the bump proves no problem.

Usually real ones are far more amusing. Since I have no specific error-page handy just now - things like "xxx will be installed in a few seconds", like another dialogue box pops up, saying "This may take several minutes".

Reminds me about the old (fake) one

"You have moved the mouse. Windows must be restarted for the changes to take effect."

There are also those pages with "stupid" customers calling the tech-support ...

Weird. PdP had not that much text, the characters could be looked up easily, since there were no kanji in the dialogues I think (although it is confusing without kanji sometimes). Of course, just an idea - I don't know how hard it actually is, when it comes to translating some text boxes and/or the hacking amount (simply using a hex editor to translate?).

Will ... yeah. I thought putting my hands on the tutorial in Sutte Hakkun. But again, this game has ... LOTS of text, I have a time hole (not enough spare time to handle university stuff _and_ putting in effort for a good translation), and I'd have to translate from Jp into English - and since English is not my native English, it would be very hard make it sound "right", not too stiff but not too lenient either. And I am simply not good enough because of it. Identifying kanji in games with not too low resolution is extremely easy with help of the internet, if you know the radicals. Problem is informal language sometimes, missing particles ...

And the question is: Close to the original or not?
Let's mention that retranslation of Breath of Fire II by d4s, he and some other hackers translated from Japanese directly into German language, put in fancy HMDA effects, a song (!) and other cool stuff - but although accuracy is very important, it just doesn't fit there.
Japanese tend to use double words often, like "to colour something with colours", of course two different words.

So I also think, like in any other language it is similar like me?
Mayme some people simply want to have everything perfectly, but cannot do (yet)?

Windows will always try to split up memory usage between installed RAM usage and page file. So even if you had like 4 GB of memory installed, it still would use a part of virtual memory, too.
As for the RAM consumption you can always run tools like Process Explorer to see the processes eating up RAM.

Some programs actually _will_ require a present page file, otherwise they will not work (properly), also Windows wll warn you every time about this, and that a memory dump will not be possible. You could lower you page file though, as the old rule "page file size = 1,5x RAM" will not play anymore a major role on modern computers. Also setting something past 2 GB of VM might be useless.
I think people with less RAM should use a bigger page file, while those with 1GB and more can work with a smaller amount of virtual memory, but I am not sure about that.

Even if that funny Wiimote/keyboard idea could be thought about, many keyboards don't allow too many multiple keypresses simultaneously - be it a cheap one, a non-existent driver or a limitation within our operating systems. But at least that keyboard idea for a Wiimote is way more accurate than trying to "emulate" an analoge stick via keyboard in terms of intensity: Something like "tapping stick left very silently" by pressing "m", "moving stick left a slight bit more (n)", ending in "moving stick left as far as possible (for y)"

Some people could consider Pepsi light also "healthy", as it contains no sugar or calories - time to re-think about those definitions. "Diet chocolate" means people think it is actually no problem to just eat more ... but it only has sugar replaced by something artificial, to make it "better" consumable for people with diabetes.
As for calories ... it is the same, eh. Other than that, luxury food is not meant to be eaten in large portions, though.
