If I don't use my computer I can do a big work unit almost every 2 days, but I keep disabling it to play games. I know it's running in the lowest priority, but it really does slow my games to a crawl. The only reason this makes sense is because all 4 cores of the Core i7 share the same L3 cache and memory controller. The L2 caches are nowhere near the size of (for example) a Core 2 Duo L2, therefore mandating high performance from the L3. So if my single-threaded game takes most of one core's time while the other 3 cores mostly fold, the game still gets 1/4th of the attn of the RAM controller/cache. For most apps this doesn't matter, but for some games, it's critical.
And enabling/disabling is all day is irritating.
If anyone else has any insights as to why it's impossible to play games and fold, let me know. |

Christ dude, how many cores does your system have?!
Whoa sorry for the double-post as well as the fact that I somehow never read your post...
8 Threads/4 Cores. It's a Core i7 860 and it's at 3.9GHz. |

What, is that supposed to be a racist comment?
Nah, it's supposed to be a nutritional comment

I've had mine stopped so long I might not make the 4-day time limit. I'm going to work soon though; at least I can let it run while I'm there. Late still counts but possibly for less points. |

25 days is too long. With that much time, we would probably figure out how to stop the world's end. Or at least figure out how to transport as many people as possible to another planet.

I didn't. I'm too lazy to go check, but you're probably right, there's probably a big difference in manganese too.
What I meant was that I used to have to take magnesium supplements, but I kinda really don't like them (and they cost money) so I started eating sunflower seeds and only whole grains. Even snacking on a box of spoon-size shredded wheat really helps. For the most part, I don't even take vitamins anymore. |

That's mostly true, but I made a video of what happens when you try to play Half Life 2 with f@h running in the background. It isn't pretty; I might upload it when I'm not feeling lazy.
As far as normal work goes, I still notice it. 8 threads sending countless request to access random pieces of the 4466MB of RAM that it's using will cause slowdown. There's not really anything that can be done about it unless Intel makes a processor where each core has it's own memory controller. Not even increasing the priority of the programs I use while decreasing the priority of the VM will resolve this.
I did just re-overclock my cpu to run at 195x20 instead of 177x22 so that the Uncore will run faster. It seems to help enough that I can just leave it running in the background now (for non-gaming usage) and not be annoyed. I really should have done this a long time ago. |

My personal favourite element is definitely vanadium, since it's element 23 and named after the Norse goddess Freya
I actually have vanadium supplements too. Very small dosage. Stuff like that shouldn't be necessary, but things like huge amounts of citric acid added to everything tend to deplete all metallic elements from your whole body. It's even hard to find juice that doesn't have extra citric acid added. |

Nah, you should be fine. I'm gonna try a few test on my CPU to see if I can prove what's going wrong; whatever it is, I'm almost certain it's specific to SMP, which is (and will likely stay) not officially supported.
