It blows up with an incomprehensible error message if the ROM is read-only.

The file format is extremely simple. It starts with a fourcc ("OMF2") and a 32-bit big-endian integer that indicates the address of the file table. The file table includes file names, start addresses, and file lengths.

It should be very easy to write an extractor tool, but unfortunately I don't have access to my development environment right now.

There is no ROM address for it. The RAM addresses from 0x80400000 to 0x807FFFFF are all in the expansion pak, which Super Mario 64 does not use.

This is Kagami holding a very large hammer.

If you have layouts enabled and put your mouse pointer over it, it changes to the letter in a writing system of disputed origin.

The Fuze+ has two USB modes, called MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) and MSC (Mass Storage Class). The mode has changed for some reason, which is why your computer now recognizes it differently. Switch it to the other mode and it'll return to the way you had it before. It'll be somewhere in the options menu.

このたびは、コナミの

まことに、ありがとうございます。

An extremely literal translation would be: "At this time we would like to thank you sincerely for purchasing T.M.N.T. 2: The Manhattan Project by Konami."

The first line of the Japanese text corresponds to the phrases "at this time" and "by Konami" in the above sentence. Please don't assume Google Translate is correct, especially with Japanese.

I wouldn't use such a literal translation in most cases, though. I'd choose something much more natural-sounding, such as the current translation on the wiki.

Now, if you put that together in literal translation, it'll look like a mess.
Maybe if you leave them in the original order. English relies heavily on word order to be comprehensible, and Japanese grammar tends to put words in the wrong order for English.

As an example, here's what I get when I chop up the same sentence as before into parts of speech. (If you don't like grammar, feel free to ignore everything but the numbers.)

[1. adverb as topic] [2. proper noun as adjective] [3. proper noun as direct object] [4. verb in gerund form] [5. adverb] [6. verb]

Now take a look at the same information, but for the sentence in English.

[1. adverb with conjunction] [6. first-person pronoun, verb, and second person pronoun] [5. adverb] [4. verb in gerund form as object with preposition] [3. proper noun] [2. proper noun with conjunction]

I ended up rearranging everything in order to get a sensible literal translation. (Additionally, some information changed from explicit to implied or vice-versa. Item 3 is explicitly a verb's direct object in Japanese, but that fact is only implied by word order in English.)

Bonus mode: Google Translate probably suggests "Thank you Konami" because the phrase "このたびは" is commonly used to start formal expressions of thanks.

Have you checked that they're not in some other simple format, such as 4- or 8-bit with a palette?

You could also try corrupting the disk image and see if you can narrow down where the character sprites are stored. If you can find them, someone here might be able to decompress them.

You could also try following the game's code in MAME's debugger. Beware: it's very time consuming! (However, if you can locate the compressed graphics, the debugger is excellent for reverse-engineering the compression format.)

I doubt any of that is necessary - the hardware probably supports only one RGB format, and that'll be the one that any sane developer will choose for the palette. It's probably the same format as the background graphics. You should concentrate your efforts on finding the indexes first.

Okay, I'm confused. How many bits per pixel are the images you are able to display?

That's not what a palette is. A palette is a lookup table that is used by indexed color images, such as the character sprites you are looking for.

There are several different formats for graphics; the most common two are RGB and indexed.

RGB images are typically stored with 15, 16, 24, or 32 bits per pixel. These have bit layouts of 555, 565, 888, and 888. Your decoder works on images of this type. RGB images do not have a palette.

Indexed images are typically stored with 8 or 4 bits per pixel, and sometimes even less than that. The bits are usually packed together so that a 2bpp image has four pixels in one byte. The palette is a lookup table containing the RGB values, usually stored in the same format as individual pixels in an RGB image (555, 888, or whatever). The image data refers to entries in this table: a color value of "0xF3" in an 8bpp image refers to color 0xF3 in the palette; the same byte in a 4bpp image represents one pixel of color 0xF and one pixel of color 0x3.
