| Ha ha ha, I carry no such burden, not this day! This day I am free! Free to rise when I please unbound by the shackles of your clock-changing witchcraft! ...But I do have to clean the house and look for a job. Oh well ![]() |

| I'm now pretty competent in PHP, but there's one thing that's really built my confidence in it - I've been doing it for a job. Working with other professionals is really good for getting a solid grounding in something. You have lots of time to spend with a subject and you spend it with other people who are also very good. It's a great combination. CSS and HTML I feel quite the same as you do now. I mean, I can make any layout I want, but am I using CSS to its potential? Am I using the cascading ability well? I really don't know if I'm using it really well. I'm also thinking of taking up Ruby on Rails or the Zend PHP Framework in my free time, but it's a whole new tool to learn to use, and I'm going to make so many mistakes in any project I do. It's disheartening... |

VLC is nice for playing those odd video files that you download that are encoded into formats you've never heard of or care for. It's very good at that. And it's also not bad at playing Windows Media stuff on the Mac. But it's stupidly unstable. The Mac version crashes a ridiculous amount, just keels over, shuts down and dies. The Windows version is a bit better, but has a habit of chewing up the audio every so often. No crashes here, though. It's good. It's definitely the best effort out there, and will probably continue to get a little better over time. Originally posted by OoBurns I could just as easily say you fix it for me ![]() |

| Make sure you keep copies of every CV and covering letter you type. I write brand new covering letters and usually tailor some details in my CV for every job I apply for. While applying for a job recently, I met a really great guy who owned the company I was applying to. His advice is directed at web developers, but is great advice whoever you are: http://www.ashyoung.org/2009/09/how-to-get-an-interview-as-a-web-developer/ |

| What he needs to learn is that people are not commodities to be won or bargained for. Leaving it longer won't help. He needs to find out that women can just not be interested in him. No amount of effort will change someone's mind. Perhaps you should seek help from a dedicated women's issues community, say on Livejournal. I don't know of any in particular, but they should have some experience in working with these issues. Also, if violence remains on your mind, there should be lots of self-defense classes in your area, some may even be targeted specifically towards women. He might be bigger, and self-defense is clearly a last resort, but there are lots of very effective things you can do to defend yourself :-) |

Number one being don't write your own Framework, use Zend Framework or CakePHP. They know much more about PHP software quality than pretty much anyone. Xkeeper, you could easily get yourself a job doing junior web work if you could piece it together in a marketable way

Originally posted by Xkeeper I don't understand, are you talking about freelance? Clients will always be jerks, but then you can always say no. Don't feel pressured to do work for free - your time is money and people must understand that. But you should be able to get a job with a company doing some basic testing in a junior role. You've maintained a legacy piece of software off your own back for years, you should have some value to someone. I've cited the Acmlmboard in two successful interviews, and in both cases it's been an item of interest. Think what you want, but it's kind of given me a career :/ |

Originally posted by GabuChickenleg Not quite. A crime becomes a "hate crime" when it is committed not against an individual, but against a minority group of people. Minorities often live in fear of being singled out for who they are, or who they are perceived to be. The new hate crime legislation in the US protects gay people and transgender people, who I can speak for here. Gay and trans people are often assaulted and murdered because of a hatred of them as a group of people. Hate crimes add extra penalty on top of the actual crime to punish the crime committed against the group of people targeted; fear. It also punishes the disproportionate amount of assaults and murders committed against gay people and trans people. It also punishes the assaults and murders committed against people who are perceived to be gay or trans, though who identify as neither but were nevertheless singled out. Hate crimes are very important - the repercussions of such crimes go way beyond the victims themselves and cause widespread suffering and despair. |

Originally posted by Xkeeper You'd be surprised how much this is an issue in the web design world at the moment. There's been a glut of articles in the past week about what to look for in a project before you just say no. There's also the ever present no-I-will-not-fix-your-fucking-computer stories that every IT worker in the world ever can tell. People have an apathy for technology, and will drop anything when it gets the slightest bit technical because it's the technology's fault and not theirs. And they'll happily trade your skills to get the technical thing fixed, before devaluing them and undermining them publicly. This and your story is fucked up, and needs to stop. We had a new starter at work a couple of weeks back. Myself and my coworkers were introduced as the "techies" and "not to come to them if you want a question asking, because understanding them is difficult". And this is a dedicated software company. And that was said with me in the room. That sort of attitude is an insult, and betrays a lack of respect for software quality, the software business and IT staff. I'm becoming a firm believer that the type of manager who moves into an industry sideways is going to become extinct. You can't learn an industry like you learn management, and one cookie-cutter course in management will not replace someone who has worked in that industry for years to found their own business. I also have hope that kids having complex mobile phones, laptops and games consoles will mean far less intolerance of technology in the future. Lack of respect for software quality and software engineering principles pervades the industry, and leads to shoddy and frankly shit products and businesses. |

Originally posted by Xkeeper Precisely. I hate the creepy executives who rant on about "mind management" and "self marketing" and all that rubbish, but learning how to present yourself effectively is something anybody can learn and it's not difficult. Think about the broad skillset you've accrued: server management, PHP programming, standards-compliant HTML markup, CSS styling, community leadership, security enhancement and cross-browser interface design. As you have unrestricted access to the software, you could even write a back-end statistic package to demonstrate community activity in an interview. Don't forget to mention the community has also historically been in the three-figure range on the Big Boards leaderboard - only losing our position because our hosting is supported by donation and not advertising and we've moved several times in the past. Also, having the skill to write quick, secure, maintainable code is really something to be proud of. There are lots of people who write or manage software projects who are willfully ignorant of these issues. The truth hurts for these people and they'll just sweep it under the carpet. Professionally developing software is a big challenge, but the big problem is people who do it just because they can; the ones who aren't interested enough to sharpen their skills and improve themselves. |

It takes just two hours to get between the two capitals - you could have a business meeting in France and be back home in time for tea. In contrast, it still takes me three hours to travel from Sheffield to Reading - I'm not even leaving England. That's staggering, Paris is just two train journeys from my house (I would walk less than half a mile just to catch the trains). |
