| Macbook: - Cheapest Mac Laptop, cheapest model is fairly (but not awesomely) priced - Comes complete with hardware and software that will work harmoniously together. No need to worry about drivers, or WiFi. - Mac Laptops have very good battery life. They also have very good power-management and hibernation features. - 13 inches and robust design make it very portable and easy to carry around. - Operating system on par with linux distributions for stability and reliability. Unsurpassed for usability. - Excelent support for dual-booting Windows, and very good software available for virtualisation (VMWare Fusion and Parallels). You don't have to say goodbye to Windows, yet you don't have to bend over for it either. Which is the best way to keep your relationship with MS ![]() - Have to upgrade to MacBook Pro for larger screen or any decent graphics hardware ![]() - Black paint on your MacBook costs stupid. But it will make you look like you have more money than sense. That can be good or bad, depending on how much sense and money you have. - There's still plenty of freeware alternatives for your office software, emulation, web browsing, text editing, development needs. By all means, there are some fine laptops by other manufacturers, but if you want to put Ubuntu on a laptop, make sure you choose one with the most common, run o' the mill components if you want it to be completely hassle-free. I'm waiting until January to get a Macbook Pro, as I can afford the premium and i'd really enjoy the benefits that come with it. As I'm working with PHP, there's no MS software I need to work, either. One word of warning, before you buy Apple. Jaunary 15th is Macworld, and Apple is expected to refresh their product line. Notebooks and subnotebooks are hotly tipped to be announced / updates. Do not buy an Apple before Macworld if you can help it. |

| Pretty much, WiFi (not sure if that's a term that's localised to Europe) in my experience has been the biggest problem when I've been running Ubuntu on a laptop. This mostly due to a lack of support from the hardware's manufacturer, the range of protocols used, and the poorly managed university wireless network. The Mac is wonderful in this respect, because hardware and software are indeed one big package. That's not really a moot argument though, it's still a heck of an advantage over other buying from other manufacturers, from a support perspective. I did see a Mac fail to connect to our uni's network though, due to poor certificate and hotspot management. You will also suffer with support departments when running anything other than Windows too, because if anything goes wrong, they'll blame it on Linux / Mac OS. |

Fine, its not worth it to you, but its worth it for me, and I have never regretted it. |

| Yup, Photoshop, Firefox + Firebug + Tamper Data, TextWrangler, Spotlight and VMWare + Windows + IE are all invaluable for web development. I'm also planning on spending some money to get BBEdit and a subversion client. I'm still using Windows at work because I haven't got a decent portable, but when I buy one, I'm buying one to have a seemless development environment. No more having to switch between Windows and Mac keyboards, and Windows and OS X shortcuts at home and at work. It also helps get around the hardware purchasing cycle at work - I'm still using a P4 1.7 with a ATI Rage and Matrox Mystique. I can't wait for a Core 2 Duo ![]() But yeah, you don't need a reason to buy a Mac. People just tend to see them working and then want one. The key to the Mac is the basics. Every day-to-day function you need from your operating system is taken care of out of the box, and it's hard to understate that. Sure, if you're gaming every day, you'll need to boot into Windows alot, but at work and everywhere else Macs really come into their own. Macs are great for graphics nuts, but they're also great for web development, video editing, word processing, web surfing, e-mailing and enjoying music and movies. They also make great World of Warcraft machines, too. |

Wow, I just discovered something remarkably similar for the Mac yesterday. Works exactly the same way, supports copy + pasting synchronisation and dragging and dropping files too ![]() Teleport for Mac I'm going to try using this program at work later on, so I can control my work machine and my laptop with my desktop's keyboard and mouse. Thanks! |

| The UK's had a dual system working for a while. The digital signal can be picked up and processed by pretty much any TV sold today. The switch-over has already begun, the analog system is being switched off slowly region-by-region. I don't really see what all the fuss is about. Radio is fine, mobile phones are fine, my cordless phone is fine, my wireless network is fine, as is everything else that uses wireless communications. All that's happening is that the television space is being shifted around a bit. Digital technology also means that more channels can be broadcast in the traditional bandwidth it occupied. I've got an HDTV that can process both analog and digital, and I've got a USB-key-sized receiver that will allow my Mac to receive, display and record digital TV, so I don't even need a TV watch digital TV ![]() |

| I'm doing the best kind of post-christmas shopping - it's Macworld in a week :-D I'm in the market for a new laptop, and Apple is expected to refresh it's portable range in a week. I might wait until March, however, to actually buy. I'm also saving for a used 500cc motorcycle ![]() |

| Banned for life? It sounds more like they stole exhibits that switched them off. Yeah, they should've only done it a handful of times and posted it anonymously, but a ban for life? Sounds like Motorola threw a hissy fit. Funny as hell though ![]() |

| It is small and very pretty, but that's where my attraction ends. If all I needed was a machine on the go, it'd be perfect - but I was hoping for a speedier processor and a basic independent graphics package from nVidia or ATI. Everything else is great about the hardware - particularly the weight and the backlit keyboard. BUT I would've gotten one anyway if it hadn't have been for the price. Before VAT, people in the UK are paying £120 more than people in the US. That's an incredible ripoff. The similarly-specced Macbook clocks in at just over half the price. I don't really want to pay that kind of premium for what is arguably a lesser machine. As it stands, the Macbook Air is now in the price range that I was considering for the entry-level Macbook Pro. I'd much rather spend the extra cash for more power - why should I pay Apple more to take stuff out? I guess all I want is a 13" Macbook Pro to replace the Powerbook 12". Small, fairly specified yet clearly priced below the 15" and 17" models. So, I'm going to wait for the Macbook Pro refresh. I know Apple's going to sell loads of Airs, but I think I can afford to lose a little portability over a lot of power ![]() |

| I use Textpad for writing PHP in Windows at work (although Notepad++ is also quite nice). - Visible white space - Line numbers - Nice search / replace / find in files / find next tool. - Tabbed window management - Text highlighting It's not as hard-working as Netbeans or the MS IDEs, but it does a good enough job. I particularly miss the auto-completion tools that the afformentioned sport. I use Text Wrangler on the Mac at home, which is like Textpad and Notepad++, but when I get a Macbook Pro for work I will probably buy BBEdit. As for Vi and Emacs, meh, I can think of more important things to worry about. I use neither, and I've got nothing to complain about. Programmers make the biggest dramaqueens. |

| It looks to me to be positioned against the other alcohol-alternatives like the J20 fruit juices. They're non-alcholoic drinks that are promoted with similar advertising as lagers, alco-pops and mixers, but are alcohol-free for the self-conscious person who drinks responsibly. Mine's a Erdinger, then ![]() |

I think it's great. I've been making myself one of these lately, and, well, I'm considering going back and starting again from scratch in Photoshop ![]() Don't listen to Grumpy, I think the colours are great and it really sells you well. I especially love the border and the fade to the bottom of the screen. It's not too narrow, either - the content is presented well, and if it was any wider you'd seriously sacrifice readability due to wide paragraphs. I'd argue that websites shouldn't be designed to extend beyond 1280 pixels wide, so using the max-width and min-width properties in CSS I design sites to start stretching at 800 pixels wide, and stop stretching at 1280 pixels. It's a really complete, very accomplished website that sums you up really well ![]() |

Originally posted by Xkeeper Hey, you were being really nitpicky . You went into a lot of detail about the things you don't like, but didn't actually say what you liked about it. If it's kind of neat, say why. Besides, the contrast is alright, not optimum, but the colours are well considered and nicely indicate where the reader's attention should be focused. I get more bitchy about "unused" screen space, anyway. I mean, unused by what? There's not enough content there to fill it anyway ;
