Well, we've been talking about it in IRC and also have been regularly doing Skypeamp, which is just taking songs we like and putting them through line-out.

However, while hydrapheetz has a radio going on, he says he can't have too many users connect to it, which isn't good for everyone.

So, what I was thinking was, after finding a suitable host to have the radio be, have it to where users can upload their own songs somewhere and then get them approved by someone or some people and then have them be part of the broadcast. Not only would it be songs in a random order, but if the users want, they could upload "commercials" for things or just talk for a brief time just for the funny factor.

Now, I dunno how this would all go about. I'm out of the question as I have connection issues as it is. However, if done, this could truly be a way to listen to much more kinds of music than the ones that we regularly listen to, something that would be cool for all of us, I think.

Suggestions or comments?

An icecast server will allow "sources" to connect to it, this way only one person needs to actually connect to it, and the server will automatically send the data to the clients. This would probably be a great solution if we can find a decently fast host with plenty of bandwidth to spare.

*yawns* FFR does this thing with WinAMP... it's pretty simple, isn't it, to set up a radio server?

I don't think it is hard to setup but what I want to see is a upload system with approvals as well, so wherever the server is hosted, it has to allow uploads from many users.

I don't know how FFR does their radio (didn't know they had a radio in the first place) but you also have to consider that we need a host that isn't just of us (us meaning user, like hydra's radio is). FFR has their own server and Pump Haven also has a radio that is hosted on their server, so we need something like that for reliability.

I'd also think that having ground rules for uploading would be needed too. For instance, making the MP3s a required bitrate or something so that way we don't have to worry about a 10 MB five minute song being uploaded or something like that. Also would need ID3 tags implemented as well...

I'd rather first find a reliable host for things so that way we know we have a host and can then start worrying about an uploader and such.

I think the main problem right now is definitely a server

There's just not enough of us to warrant anything big, either...

I heard about peercast, that might help, dunno. I never really found out how to make a radio server, mainly because of the horrendous bandwidth involed.

Peercast could work, but then one person would have to really stay on and listen to it all anyway (which I can't do altogether). I dunno, I may use it for my own personal use, though...

Again, a server is the only thing we need, which might be kind of hard to find...

(Upstream) bandwidth is the main reason why I'm streaming Vorbis-encoded audio at a lower bitrate.

Amusingly, BMF claims that this server has 'unlimited' outgoing bandwidth...

...but even I'm not willing to push him that much

Well, this is just an HTTP server as far as I know, not a virtual server like ||board or boardII...

So yeah, uh... I don't think we can use it for that.

*Xkeeper shrugs

I'll just uh... edit the thread title with some more relevant information, then.

I've done it before. It's really pretty easy and I would've done something like this a long ass time ago if I had the bandwidth to foot it.

56K against an entire community is a no no. Just ShoutCast it and sent out the IP following port 8000. It's not hard for basic use.

EDIT: The last time I did it was 3/27/04. DAMN...it's been a damned long time since I had good bandwidth.

The problem is a few things;

- Most of us don't have the bandwidth for more than, say, two users at good quality (five tops)
- Most of us aren't online 24/7 and don't have the most stable interweb ever (hi)
Assuming that some people (like, uh,... me) would be listening to these, we might like to let songs drag on, since things like SPCs or NSFs or whatever don't have predetermined end times

Keep Winamp going in a playlist with song requests and have it muted with multiple instance in the background. Whoever has it can open a second one and use their Winamp like no tomorrow.

You can set max users and bandwidth in the INI. 64kbps/22KHz is more than sufficient. It's radio. I wouldn't be able to personally go over 24kbps in terms of listening (and would lag over 16).

10 users over 64kbps is a little over half a megabit a second (640kbps). Most normal broadband users cap at about 512 or lower. 10 users on 24kbps is 240kbps. Most broadbanders have this UL.

If someone had a decent UL, you could get a lot more than that.

I think this is a great idea. The only problem is that we should get enough of the userbase here to get intrested in it or else this may turn out to be nothing of a fad. I'd hate to see us get a server then after about a month nobody listens to it...

It usually does.

It was an on-and-off fad over three or four years ago in IRC with Ace.

You can get a server running with everyone's IP wanting to contribute to this and what's playing and cap it that way. Not just necessarily running one set playlist. That way everyone could contribute that was willing for whatever their playlist was.

Just tested it with cpu. It's as easy as I remember.

If you guys seriously want to do this, view this link:

Heh, I just realized... too bad my mom's interweb isn't working well, I could use the (now rather useless) WB800 as a server

Receiving incoming transmission from The Captain...
You should call it KWTF

This sounds interesting. If only my speakers or headphone jack were functional...
