The proof is in my sig.

Or if you're lazy, here it is:

How it's done is, you run an image through a base64 converter and then you just do <img src="data:image/(image extension);base64,(base64 output)">

Isn't that just using the board as a host, though?

Though it is pretty cool...

Only some do (i.e., not IE ...)

Although I don't like seeing a ton of HTML going to personal image space, especially since you can't reuse it, you can't cache it, and overall it's just lame...

So that's why your images take forever to load...

Sorta lame. I mean, free space for hotlinking is everywhere.

Heck, I have about... 6 of those to leech off of. And they're better than photobucket/annoying orange frog/whatever.

They take literally no time at all.

I should run my minipic through it and save some extra loadtime.

Didn't Dwedit make a thread on this a few days ago on AB2 about this same thing?

Then you would be one of those people that don't know that's currently being taken care of.

Oh wait, you're one that's actually keeping the drama going by saying something like that.

My mistake.

I take it that it takes a little more processing power for the image to show up (since the browser has to read AND decode it) ?

The performance hit is actually relatively minor; I'm more worried about the bandwidth hit...

Since, with thoes, you can't do something like and have it only take up the space of the HTML + one copy of the image; the same thing in a data: URL would require 4 seperate copies of the image, so if you were using a 10K image, that turns into 40K for a repeating image. Bad bad bad.

Data URLs were a horrible idea in my opinion; uncachable, cheap way to waste bandwidth, and all around just pointless.

I can't think of a single good use for it, other than embedded, one-use generated images.

Annoy people, I guess?

But yeah, now that I think about it, it's pretty useless. Well, in a browser. Something like an IM program could take it, but then again, barely any uses.

Small image transport (i.e. somtehing small via PM or IM) would work when you have no other option, such as direct connect not working...

But yeah, aside from some small, very specific uses, it's rather... useless.

It won't work! Still, it's better than using an ASCII art maker that can utilise html and a really small font.
