Everyone who's played video games has a few tunes that have stuck in their memory for some reason. What video game songs top your personal list of [trope]CrowningMusicOfAwesomeVideoGames[/trope], and why do they hold a special spot in your heart? Do they remind you of a climactic part of a game's storyline, are they relaxing songs that you put on to get your mind off of other things, or are they just plain awesome songs to listen to anytime?

Here's a sample of my list, which is much too long to list here in full ():

Sonic Advance - Egg Rocket Zone: I liked this song as soon as I first heard it, and it's one of a couple I would put on in the sound test and listen to while I was at a summer program in 2005. Still brings back memories of riding the bus to and through New York City, which is where I first put it on loop to listen to.

Yoshi Topsy Turvy - Tale of the Spirit of Money: The other song I would listen to on that same summer vacation. This one's a little more relaxing than Egg Rocket Zone, but it still conjures up similar memories.

Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - Southern Face Shrine: This song's grown on me lately. It really sounds like something nostalgic and sad, which is fitting considering the setting it's played in in-game.

Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - Ballad of the Wind Fish: It should be self-explanatory to anyone who knows the story of this game why this song is so excellent and filled with emotion.

Subterranean Animism - Satori Maiden ~ 3rd Eye: One of the best boss themes in all of Touhou, so it's fitting for one of the best boss fights. The beginning is ominous, befitting the character and stage, and climaxes as she starts throwing out copied spellcards from previous games... The first time I reached her felt just as spectacular as the first time I played Touhou, which was something I hadn't felt in a while.

Mario Kart 64 - Credits: This one's one of my favorites just because it's such a great song. The video that plays over it makes it even better in my opinion, because it brings out a feeling of "You're at the end, so now let's remember what you went through to get here." (In other words, nostalgia again. )

---

I like a lot more songs than that, but those are just the first few to come to mind. What about you? Any songs that you hold a special place for? Give explanations, please--a list of songs is just that, but an explanation as to why they're awesome songs gives more content and is just more interesting.

Why is it that everyone loves this song? I...just think there are better (in it, even). Not saying it's bad but its popularity is odd to me.

You know I just made a lit on another board not too long ago...

10. King of Fighters 2003 - Splendid Evil / Ash, Duolon, Shen team theme (Tate-Norio, Masahito Hataya)

- You know, if there's anything about the KOF series...it usually has good BGM when you're kicking the crap out of someone. That's always a plus when it comes to fighting games since it just boosts your want to shove the opponent's face into the concrete. Most SNK fighters have this trait about them.

9. Phantom Brave - R&R Junkie / Walnut (Tenpei Sato)

- Sato's great. Most of the songs he comes up with can work with practically any game he's associated with since his SNES days. This song's no exception...and the only song I can think of in games when 'harmonica' is brought into the conversation (outside of Ar Tonelico).

8. Persona 3 - Mass Destruction / Battle (Shoji Meguro)

- Awesome battle theme. Hands down unexpected when it comes to playing something like this for the first time when it comes to what you'd expect out of most RPGs...

7. Dragonball Z Budokai 3 (JAPAN) - Ore wa Tokoton Tomaranai!! / Title, Eye-Catch (Hironobu Kageyama)

- Laugh all you want...but this was one of the best themes I've heard when it comes to openings in a fighter. Still has me doing fist-pump every so often if I'm not careful.

6. Akumajou Densetsu - Aquarius / Block-6, alt. path (Kinuyo Yamashita)

- I'd have to agree that VRC6 owns when put to good use. Leave it to her, a college grad in the FMC daze, to make a song like this and then some that would stick for decades.

5. Super Puyo Puyo - Final of PuyoPuyo / Final Stage (Einosuke Nagao)

- You know, no one I know - unless I mention it otherwise - ever looks towards Madou Monogatari as a source of decent music. It's fairly hit and miss with some games...but overall it's actually pretty good. This song had me head-banging for a long time back when I got started with SM. It got to the point I had to sim it, re-sim it, re-re-sim it...

4. Axelay - Mother / Stage 3 (Sotara Tojima)

- Swing in your ship. A most excellent track. A most excellent OST overall.

3. Kingdom Hearts II - A Fight to the Death / Final Battle (Yoko Shimomura)

- Probably one of the more short but epic final battle themes I've heard, honestly, and that's leaving the whole FF6/7/whatever games to themselves for obvious reasons.

2. Killer Instinct - Trailblazer / Cinder's Theme (Graeme Norgate, Robin Beanland)

- Love the shit out of this game. Cinder's theme is easily one of the best tunes in here and likely one of the most recognizable for me when it comes to games in general.

1. Valkyrie Profile 2 - Celestial Troupe / One of many Boss Battle themes...Hrist comes to mind... (Motoi Sakuraba)

- Motoi Sakuraba. How does I love thee? Let me count the ways. Moar guitar plz?

Honorable mention:

Dragon Quest VIII - BROAD WORLD [To a Vast World] / (Koichi Sugiyama)

- I once (or many times have) heard a custom NSF of this that kicks the original in the groin. Uses a plethora of instrument expansions to get the job done...VRC6, VRC7, MMC5, N106...I've also seen one cover of Chrono Cross's Scars of Time that does the job as well...somewhat...

Keep in mind, that's changed a bit...

I'd say some of the stuff I've seen since then are favorable...particularly Persona 4's battle theme kicking 3's to the curb...again with the unexpected nature of a battle theme.

Every of us has a littlehuge ⑨ inside.
----------------------------
Well, I can't think of many now... but I'll try a few. And yes, it's mostly Kirby.

Kirby 64 - Final Battle (0²'s theme): The entire scene and feeling of the fight definativelly gave me this "omnipotent omniscient evil" feeling. And unlike in the other games where Kirby would just beat him alone, he practically would have died if the fairy didn't come help him. It definativelly was the best way the final battle in that game could've been done -- And the music manages to express everything perfectly.
(To not make this post a "I love Kirby 64 is the best game evar1111!", I'll just say the factory, the river stage, shiver star world map and ripple star world map are also awesome)

Kirby's Adventure - Orange Ocean: I absolutelly love this song and I don't know how to explain why... It's kind of both energetic and calm, yet it sorta portraits the light and dark theme of the adventure. It gives me sort of both an "accomplishment" feeling and a "yet to accomplish". It's probbly my favorite song... at least when I am in a good mood.
Not to mention listening to it for days on the sound test since I unlocked it and having it playing on my head when I drew Kirby stuff for the first time.

Kirby Super Star - Credits: Seriously, why even explain this one.

Kirby's Dreamland 2 - Coo's Theme: I'd also listen to this for hours looping and not getting any tired of it, and was actually the first Kirby song I heard an awesome remix of... It sorta helps me with a few personal problems too.

Kirby's Dreamland 3 - a song first played in 2-5: Basically this song summarizes the entire Kirby series for me. I really don't know why. It's also one of the songs I'll listen to for hours randomly.

[insert a huge list of more Kirby songs here]

And now to other things.

Super Mario 64 - Credits: Nostalgia. It's sort of like Mario Kart's, you've beat the game and you recall the memories of all of it. Specially Mario 64 being a game I spent a lot of time with... so not only gives me memories of the stages as they are in the game, but my vision of the game.

Yoshi's Island: The entire Yoshi's Island soundtrack... Or more like, the stage's music. Each area gives me a feeling I've associated with it. The caverns one for example, it makes me immediatelly reflexive, no matter what my mood was.

Terranigma - Underworld: This one is kinda strange... Instead of giving the usual "you have a long journey ahead", it gives a sense of accomplishement for some reason, like the one you'd hear at the final chapter of the game or something...

Terranigma - Royd's theme: It reminds me of the part of the Dragon Castle. Which to me is practically the best part of the entire game. Or at least of the chapter.

Cave Story - Geothermal: Becouse of my first playthrough of the game I got the normal ending, I associate this song to how Curly and pretty much everyone died in a failed effort to stop the doctor.

This post came out being way longer than excepted (took 2 hours )... I'd write about Freudia's Thema or Mizuno from Ikachan, but eh... maybe another time.

Edit: Imperishable Night - Illusionary Night ~ Ghostly Eyes: HOW could I forget this?!

Radiant Silvergun - Space Battle Ship 130 33KI - The music for Stage 5(A), which is pretty much one big boss battle against a ship tossing gigantic missiles at you and closing itself up randomly, all in an attempt to kill you, the player. The Saturn version of the game has another boss battle (very similar, too) right afterwards.

Battle Bakraid - Sky Gunner - Surprisingly awesome Stage 1 music. Too awesome, in fact.

Radiant Silvergun - Return - Same as above. Only (slightly) more awesome.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Dracula's Castle (Michiru Yamane)

An epic intro to an epic game. The previous 8- and 16-bit titles were great and all, but man...once the lights came up and this song started playing, I could tell I was in for one hell of a ride. This is still one of my all-time favorite games.

NOT OVER YET
Chrono Trigger
Battle with Magus: I dunno, I just enjoyed how it nailed the "oh shit this is serious" tone
To Far Away Times: Satisfying, sweet, and ended the game (or, really, the first of the endings I get) on a wonderful note. Sometimes, I can feel a tear working up when the ending plays this song.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Overture: Always listening to the 1:58 it plays for when the title screen comes up, I can't help but smile at how grand and nostalgic the song is.
Strange World ~ Marching Through the Fields: Running through the wide, expansive fields got pretty boring after awhile. However, this particular song made the wide, expansive feeling of the overworld fresh again, and I always enjoyed the [first several minutes] of running around.
Heavenly Flight: I have a difficult time describing Heavenly flight. It starts of majestic and slow, then progresses to a moving, stronger feeling of... flying, among other feelings. It's great. I remember just aimlessly flying around just to listen to this song.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Snake Eater: The ultimate lip-syncing song featured in a video game. I fell in love with its Bond-likeness and the lyrics' meaning.
Sidecar - Escape From The Fortress: This song is incredibly climactic, and is played during the escape from Groznyj Grad. I absolutely love this scene, the climax of the game.

Final Fantasy VI
Aria di Mezzo Carattere: That song sung by Celes during the infamous Opera scene. I'm not sure how to even describe how great it is.
Searching for Friends: This gave the barren World of Ruin a feeling of hope, as missing friends were searched for. Another victim of aimlessly flying around while adoring the song.

Okami
Shinshuu Plains I/II: Gave me an open, outdoorsy-like feeling. It was like a breath of fresh air every time this song came up.
Ushiwaka's Appearance: Peaceful and flowing, this song combined the harp and flute, among other things, with a harmonious result. It made Waka's somewhat annoying dialogue far more enjoyable.
Competition with Idaten: Holy shit intense. The petty races with Ida were definitely beefed up with this upbeat, competitive song.
Ryoshima Plains I/II:: Much like Shinshuu Plains, except that the feelings were felt tenfold. I didn't think Shinshuu Plains could be topped, but when I got to Ryoshima Coast, I was blown away.

Suikoden
Theme of Sadness (Guitar version): Played during the death of a certain character, this song did not fail at teaming up with the scene to hit me in a soft spot and get the tears going. Theme of Sadness is full of emotion, and I can say that, without a doubt, I've never felt so sad from a song and scene like these.

Suikoden II
Gothic Neclord: The final showdown with that vampire Neclord couldn't have been pulled together so well if it weren't for this song. Epic.
The Chase: Fighting against Luca Blight. This battle (or, really, series of three six-member-party battles and a one-on-one duel) proved to be a tough cookie, and the song made it all the more epic. I screwed up and lost on the duel (which is actually supposed to be easy and last about five seconds), but with the crazy battle against Luca, I couldn't care less. It was great.

I'm pretty sure there's quite a few games/songs I've overlooked, but I either forgot them or don't feel like adding them, since it'll be more or less a rehash of "crazy awesome good shit."

Ah, this has always been a part of my life, I'd like to think. Here's my list.

Super Mario Bros. - Overworld Theme
Due to SMB1 being the first game I ever played, this just really takes me back. Then again, it takes everyone back, doesn't it? Almost every single person on Earth has played SMB1, but nobody really recognizes this theme, specifically, as awesome, except for nostalgia purposes.

Megaman 2 - Fortress Theme 1
Kimi ga kurete yuru ki wa okkusenman, okkusenman... I think Megaman 2 was one of the first games I ever beat. Even so, this song has an imprint on nearly everyone as well. The atmosphere was great, and when I listen to it, it always feels like "Alright, this is it. The beginning of the end." Some even consider it the best Megaman song ever.

Touhou 10 - Suwako's Theme
If you haven't heard this one, you're missing out. If you haven't heard the Ronald McDonald remix, you're missing out even more. It really feels like a final battle theme. Suwako may not look like much herself, but her theme just kicks ass.

Megaman 9 - Maze of Death
I've never played Megaman 9 myself, but if I ever download it off Xbox Live, I'll be sure to get Endless Attack as well, even if it's just for the music. This one just makes you strive to keep going. Keep pushing at the challenge given to you. Never give up, never give in... The arrange version almost does a better job. Maze of Death is a good thing to listen to when you're feeling overwhelmed by something, just about to give up... it'll pat you on the shoulder and say "C'mon, man. We're almost there."

Title Theme - The Lost Vikings
When you turn on a game, you expect to see a little demo or backstory and such, right? The Lost Vikings has something different - trumpets come in, and it feels like they're announcing your arrival to the game. Then you see the warriors you'll be controlling, Erik, Baleog, and Olaf, looking at you expectantly, as a knight would look at his king. You have to see it to know what I mean. ;

Ending Theme - The Lost Vikings 2
And then, when the warriors (and their new friends) complete their hardships, and overcome their final enemy, the game heralds the player again, as the Vikings return to their homeland. Victorious, they joke around with eachother, and celebrate, like an army who has just won a battle. And they return to their monarch, the player. I have the first eight seconds of this as my highlight on IRC.

Kirby Superstar - Skyhigh/Athletic Theme
This would be one of the songs I've heard an awesome remix for. You know how those crazy people at Nico Nico Douga put Kirby yelling "PAUNCH" over the Gourmet Race theme? Well, think of that, but more fast paced. Personally, I think the remix for this song is much better than the one for Gourmet Race.

Well, there you have it. Some of the songs that have been in my mind since I first heard them.

Favorite of all time:
Ducktales - The Moon
This just owns, the melody is amazing and the song brings me loads of memories.

Other good songs in no special order:
Garou: Mark of the Wolves - Spread the Wings (Rock Howard theme)
A very good and fitting song, with a certain surprise that most people will recognize.

Sonic 3 - Last Boss
Once again, very nostalgic theme. Gets my blood pumping, and makes me remember first time I saw the last boss of sonic 3. I nearly crapped my pants.

John Madden 91 - Main Theme (And only song)
This is so amazingly cheesy, and the rest of the game is fucking hilarious. True example of so bad that it's awesome.

I'm going to post more when I get around to it, but I really fell in love with Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia's "An Empty Tome".

The game in and of itself was spectacular, but the music really stuck out in my mind as what defined it.

Oh, yeah. That's the best track in the game by far.

I wasn't too impressed with the rest of the soundtrack, honestly. Portrait of Ruin's was so much better.

I love a whole bunch of songs (my music collection is more than 90% video game music) but I'll still try to narrow down my absolute favorites.

Athletic - Super Mario Bros. 3
One of my favorite Mario songs of all time from one of my favorite Mario games of all time. SMB3 was my first Mario game and as such, this song holds so many memories for me. I was so happy that they remixed it for DDR: Mario Mix and Super Mario Galaxy. I love it~

Ice Cream Island - Kirby's Adventure
One of my favorite Kirby songs of all time, etc. The fact that it's the music for the tropical island world makes me love it even more. I have four different versions of it in my collection, including the one performed by xoc. Kirby's Adventure had many great songs which I loved, but this one takes the cake.

Hop! Hop! Donut Lifts (Athletic) - Yoshi's Island
Yoshi's Island is another one of my favorite Mario games and by far my favorite Yoshi game. This song is tied for first of my favorite songs in the game. It's so upbeat, happy, and catchy. I was very pleased that it made it into Brawl. The levels I most strongly associate with this song happen to be my favorite levels in the game, particularly 2-5 and the levels with the beautiful sky view of the ocean with all the clouds and islands below (and of course 1-5, the namesake of the song). One of the multiple versions I have in my collection is the lovely arrangement from Idataki Street DS, that one Dragon Quest/Mario crossover board game. Hearing this song with its original instruments brings back so many memories.

Castle Theme - Yoshi's Island
The other song I love from the game. I've always loved the castles and fortresses in Yoshi's Island, and this haunting melody helps contribute to the atmosphere. In fact, a chance to know the castles inside-out was what made my start mapping Yoshi's Island in the first place. Castles are pretty much my favorite levels in the game. Like the others, this song holds so many memories.

Vs. Marx - Kirby Super Star
An extremely dramatic piece that fits perfectly with the final boss of one of the biggest and greatest Kirby games ever. It's even greater with Marx's laugh thrown in.

Milky Way Wishes Credits - Kirby Super Star
A song that almost brings me to tears. A fitting end to the game. Lots of memories in this one.

Credits - Mario Kart 64
A beautiful song that makes winning the last cup so satisfying. The OC Remix of it sometimes brings me to tears. Mario Kart 64 will always be one of my favorite Mario Karts.

Extol - Tetrisphere
My favorite of the normal tracks in the game. I love the chanting voices and synth. Needless to say, I set it as my defaut music in the game's settings. I linked to it because not many people have probably played Tetrisphere.

Sappy - Sappy
My favorite of the hidden chiptune-type tracks in the game. Despite the limited instruments, it still manages to be very beautiful.

From Seeing the Rough Wave (De Rol Le) - Phantasy Star Online
The dramatic music to my favorite boss in the game. Lots of memories of me me playing PSO with my brother with this song. Same with the next.

You Have Nowhere to Go (Vol Opt) - Phantasy Star Online
Another dramatic orchestrated boss song, this one very fitting of the hulking machine core of Vol Opt you fight inside the small computer terminal room. Me and my brother had a lot of fun and difficulty with this boss, so it still gives me a bit of the chills.

Checker Knights - Kirby Air Ride
Despite being originally made for the Kirby anime, it's still a video game song to me since it was featured in Air Ride. I could listen to it forever. Just like with all the other video game songs, this one is loaded with memories of me and my brother playing together.

Vs. Katina - Star Fox Assault
My favorite part of Assault was the multiplayer mode because of the freedom you had with interacting with vehicles, being able to hop in and out of them and ride on top of them. While Katina wasn't my favorite stage to play on, it has my absolute favorite song in the entire game. I especially love the intro.

Hooktail Castle - Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
While the entire game has an amazing soundtrack, this one seems to be my favorite of it all (not counting the final boss song). I don't know what it is about it, but I could listen to it for hours. In fact, several times I turned on the game just to sit Mario in the castle so I could listen to the music while I studied (before I had the soundtrack). Note that I also did this to listen to Punio's theme and Glitzville, as well as the menu theme.

Fury Volcano 2 - Super Princess Peach
This jazzy piece is my favorite song in the whole game. Oh, how I wish VGMTrans could work with it and extract a midi of this song. I would love to be able to play it myself.

Gloam Valley - Super Paper Mario
This is the first song that we first heard in trailers for the game, so its the song I associate most with the title. I once listened to it for seven hours straight. I also love the color orange.

The Ultimate Show - Super Paper Mario
The final bosses of games always have the best music, don't they? I once stopped to consider the full scope of the battle while listening to this song and it brought me to tears and gave me shivers at the same time. The fate of all existance depends on you fighting the monster that used to be your little brother, the person you've spent your entire life with and love more than anything. This monster happens to be nearly a sixty feet tall and bears the image of your brother, distorted into a mocking smile, and is being fought inside a castle floating in the middle of the Void. Think about that when you listen to the song.

Good Egg Galaxy - Super Mario Galaxy
The first level song and theme song I guess you could say of SMG. Like Gloam Valley, it's the first song we were shown in the trailers. In itself it is a beautiful song and has inspired me to make several drawings. In case it wasn't obvious by now, I like orchestral music.

Bowser Battle - Super Mario Galaxy
One of the most dramatic Bowser battle songs ever, if not the most dramatic. The fact that a choir is added in at the most intense parts of the battle really make it powerful. The second time I faced Bowser, I hit him at just the right time for the choir to come in at the peak of the song and it gave me chills. One could argue that the dynamic choir makes this song more dramatic than the final battle music, which is pretty dramatic as it is.

I tried my best only to pick my absolute favorites. I guess it's still a lot though. ;
