The core is still vista.

I count this more of a service pack than anything.

Typically speaking, you should use Google/Wikipedia/whatever when you don't know about something.

That way, you don't wind up sounding like an idiot, and we don't have to deal with it.

Since VMWare Fusion on this stupid laptop allows for having multiple virtual machines, I'm going to download it and give it a whirl. Unfortunately, at this moment downloading is disabled until they put up more servers to handle the huge amount of download requests.

For any of you who don't know already, Microsoft's site now has a section dedicated to Windows 7, with info on things like new features in the OS and in IE8.

Looks like you won't be able to test out all the new features unless you have multiple computers to test the new Homegroup feature or a touchscreen to test out the touch controls and handwriting.

So... anyone try gaming with 7? Cause if I can still run everything, and if I enjoy it enough, I could see us permanently switching over from Vista...

It's on its way here.

I'll let you know when it finishes and what I think.

I guess I can try installing Halo tonight and see how it goes...

In other news, I feel all dirty going back to XP. (considering I'm dual booting and all my files are there I have no choice but to go back just to function...) It's all laggy... And slow... and ugh... :| The interface is nice, and I love it, but Windows 7 just seems to win with speed and functionality.

I gotta admit...this thing's freakin' fast.

I'm actually surprised that it's better than XP is for me currently, even with the level of degree I take in making sure my system is being bogged down by crap...

So... really impressed by the speed.
Currently installing Steam, I'll report back with how well Left 4 Dead works.

Give gmod a try if you've got it. It's notorious for have a 20 min boot time... Though on Vista, it didn't take so long... I wonder how 7 handles it. <<

Ironically, even though it says it has DirectX -11- installed, you still need to supply the DX9 parts to it to make that area of it run.

Case in point, if you want to run Touhou, let's say, on it...just install the DX 9 distributable that Microsoft has. It'll clear it up.

So... L4D runs perfectly.
I'm pretty much sold on the beta. Wondering if I can claim the 80-gig drive my dad installed it on as my own.
Vista: Takes 10-15 seconds for the computer to respond after quitting.
7: Can open IE8 as soon as I quit the game.

I'll try with Gmod tomorrow, have to install it first.

Like I said...not sure what they did all differently, but this performance is nice.

They must've taken out something very large.

No kidding, considering the install size as compared to Vista.
EDIT: Something else I noticed. IE8 runs pretty good. (Still can't beat Firefox though) I've had some troubles rendering pages on IE7 that load nice and quickly now.

Well, I installed it as a virtual machine on my laptop via VMWare Fusion, and it works pretty nicely. However, due to the graphical limitations of this Macbook, it can't do any of the transparency effects in the windows or taskbar. Customizing things looks great, and I love how you can switch to not only the "Windows Classic" (aka 98) theme, you can also use an even simpler "High Contrast" theme. Unfortunately, it looks like there's no option for the XP theme, but there is a transparent-less version of the default theme for those who don't want the glassy look.

Paint has a lot of new features now, but I forgot to check if you can add text when zoomed in. I don't know how Vista's Paint was because I abandoned it pretty quickly, but you can use your scroll wheel to zoom in and out, and there are a bunch of new shape tools. Not only that, but you can drag around the shapes with editing handles if you need to reposition it before clicking out of the handles to set it in place.

IE8 seems to work fine, though I'm still trying to figure out how to rearrange the button layout on the top more. I remember reading somewhere a while ago that you could somehow choose IE6's arrangement, but I haven't figured out how. I'm looking forward to abusing testing out web slices.

Edit: Oh, and for whatever reason, when I checked the Task Manager, it seemed that a little over 500mb (half) of my PF Usage was already being used by something, but I couldn't figure out what was doing it. I'll have to check again to see if it changed.

Want to talk epic fail...I went to install this, out of curiosity, on one of our test comps for out company today.

Everything, even the German technology for Ardence/CIF-based services installed fine.

You get to our software? NNNK! Blue-screens. The software that we've created for ourselves is wholly incompatible with Vista/7. Apparently, they've rewritten a new version from scratch that doesn't bomb out with Vista (and probably 7) but it's in its beta stages and they've not yet released a copy for 'the lower people' to test out.

I'd rather they just give it to me.

Hey, guess what? Yeah, that's right.

Oh, and there's some kind of cool new feature that lets you take pictures of parts of the screen and mark them up before saving them as a .PNG file wherever you want. Take a look:

The tools you can use to mark it up are very similar to those available in PowerPoint but with more customization options. You don't even have to mark them up, even. You can just save em. It's pretty handy.
