What the hell? No harmful criticism? Does that mean I should just praise you for trying and say nothing should be changed when it looks like you put no real effort into it?

Clicking a checkmark in the blending options is NOT good Photoshop skills. In fact you would be REDICULED for even thinking it is proper design!

In fact, here is what a LITTLE effort can do. FIVE minutes tops.

Notice the font effects. Took everything you did with your font, but CHANGED the settings to make something new. Notice the gradient isn't black and white. Notice the drop shadow is brought to the top, opacity changed, and size/spread change to give it the effect of 3D. Notice the bevel is kept simple but not bulky. The only added effect is the Satin, which I modified as well.

THAT is what I'm telling you to fix! Using the default settings makes things look dull since everyone knows how to click checkmarks, not to mention it makes anything looks horrible.

Vintage? That is NOT vintage. That just looks like you spent no effort on resizing. And saying PIXEL ART looks horrible kept PIXELATED is absolutely hilarious. IT SHOULD STAY PIXELATED! How hard is that for me to explain!?

Pixel fonts should be kept pixelated. That is why they are pixel fonts. By anti-aliasing them you are better off choosing a compltely new font as the pixel font became completely trashed.

I've given enough criticism for you to put some effort into it, and all you are doing is giving me excuses as to why you didn't do more with your banner. None of those are valid excuses. You can start putting some effort into your banner and maybe then I'll consider taking you seriously.

Well he also meant the resizing. Basically, sometimes pixelation can be a nono artwise. Like in a fancomic, you don't want a lot of things look artificial like in a video game. But since this is a banner it could work. But drawing them just how they are instead, would boost the image up much better. Like kinda tracing them with the paintbrush tool. Just don't do it too fast or you'll make them all crooked.

well, this is the first time ever i use photoshop. i know that clicking a checkmark isn't good skills, i know i'm not good at image creating, but you could be a bit more encouraging with photoshop starters like me.

also, for my banner, you can tell it's ugly for whatever reasons, but i don't like seeing lots of "negative" stuff like "your banner looks horrible, the bevel is horrible, the mushrooms are horrible, etc...".

so you think that i should remove anti-aliasing because it's pixel art? hmm, yeah, i'll have a look at that...

btw, your banner looks really good! congrats!
of course, you're way better than me with photoshop.

if i understand right, i should draw the shrooms myself? well, it can be a good idea, but i've never been very good at drawing stuff with a paintbrush, using a mouse.

iT'S EAIER TO TRACE IT WITH A PAINTBRUSH WITH A MOUSE THAN TO DRAW THEM FROM SCRATCH. *types capslock* It won't be incredibly effortful I don't think. Also, listen to CPU. He knows a LOT. This forum is for criticism from all points and places. Even if it's a little hard to swallow.

When starting Photoshop look through cool tutorials.

You will learn things 10x faster doing it yourself doing other things than you will figuring it out without aid like that or using a tutorial for Photoshop. Trust me.

Since I want to stay out of the flame war, I'm just going to also say that using tutorials will help you learn Photoshop extremely fast.

I learned a lot in Photoshop with this:
http://fireball20xl.com/avast.html

It was for sprite comics, but after doing the entire thing and learning the various tools, you play around a bit on your own and get the gist of everything else pretty quickly.

Enjoy!

thank you!

i had some reflexion about all that before going in bed. thank you evenrybody for your advices! i'll try to follow them when creating the second version of my banner.

and, cpubasic13, i agree, your criticism is constructive, but a bit discouraging for photohop beginners.
but i should have said that i'm a potoshop beginner in the first post. i'll correct it.

Shiny new layout!
----------------------------------------------------

Constructive criticism can be hard to take when you're just starting out. That's why you've got to tell us you're a beginner in the first place.

I'm afraid I can't speak for everyone pushing tutorials, as I taught myself everything I know about photoshop by just screwing around with things and having a little fun with it. Believe me though, it's a lot easier to go out and do things with a program when you know exactly what that program can do.

Just keep fiddling with things on your own and you'll eventually hit something.

Also

I know it's not a banner, but it's just an example of something that I've done. Used the pen tool, gradients, and bevel. Just trying to prove that it's not what you use, it's how effectively you use it. Understand?

Also, google "photoshop brushed metal" in response to your earlier inquiries. There's multiple tutorials that should pop up.

The purpose of criticism isn't to mindlessly praise you. The point of criticism is to point out what's wrong so you can fix it.

I was actually about to mention this.
If it were to, say, blend smoothly from black surrounded by white to black surrounded by red, it could work, I think.

I was given an image and this is what resulted.

I ended up doing that for someone the other night. Pretty much a simple job of calling for the right text formatting on top of creating layers off originating ones (original layer, stroke layer, shadow layer all split). Then I used bevel, gradient and went from there. I'm not big on using the pen tool either (mostly because I dunno how).

Pretty simplistic and that generally feeds back into having a good banner by STAYING simplistic via KISS principle.

hmm... so, if i understand right, i should use different gradient/bevel/etc, not blur the mushrooms or the font, and make the font use different colors, right?

i'll take care of all your advices when creating the second version of the banner.

and, Data Genuis, about your picture, at the left side, i don't like the direct transition from white to dark red, but otherwise, it looks good.

Basically, if you just checkmark it, you aren't putting effort into it.

There is a LOT you can do with the blending options. You just have to experiment.
