I'm sure most of you already know.

Feel free to ask me anything about it and I'll boot it up and report back.

The interface is weird and I haven't figured some things out (go away, vile taskbar clock!)... other parts aren't that bad.

And, fyi, Windows 7 runs better than XP. When I leave the machine idle, it flatlines at 0%.

Overall, I kind of like it. The lack of the old Quick Launch thing is kind of distressing, though, and "pinning things to the taskbar" works weird.

Drag's Post #919
In XP, the hdd sounds like xp's writing something to it every second on the dot. That and the hdd light gives a weak flicker every second occasionally. Does Windows 7 do that too?

Edit: It isn't all the time, just occasionally.

Edit edit: I also wish they'd move the properties panel thing in explorer back to the side, instead of on the bottom.

XP might be defragmenting your machine, try checking that out in the Performance dialog.

What new or improved features are in explorer? In the display settings, what are the color schemes? How long do you expect a service pack to be released after the official release? How much space is it taking up on your HDD?

It isn't much different from Vista's, as far as I can tell.

In the display settings, what are the color schemes?

There are a few. The one I'm using is almost one, then there are some in various colors/backgrounds, and then one or two WIndows Classic variations.

uh

How much space is it taking up on your HDD?

Look at the C drive in that screenshot.

So is this just Vista except faster, more memory efficient?

How about all the annoying security warnings from vista, are those still there?

Somewhat. I got one when renaming a file in Paint (including "YOU NEED TO BE ADMIN TO DO THIS"), but you can configure how annoying UAC is.

Oh, renaming also popped up a UAC. I guess rename requests from within programs does it too, which can get pretty old fast. Good thing you can turn it off

I used to get those all the time with vista. Sad to see they've brought that back. Any new 'games?'

I didn't check. Most of the Vista shit (e.g. Windows Messenger, Movie Maker, etc) have to actually be downloaded now instead of coming pre-installed, so.

I hope it stays that way, most of the inbuilt shit I have freeware lightweight alternatives too.

But yeah I am interested, nice visuals whilst using 0% CPU? Sign me up. (After the beta that is)

CES is in session.

MS will have the test-drive beta on the 9th. So be sure to check that link later on tomorrow.

this beta looks like windows vista except that i think paint looks better.
i like all the 3D effects in vista, on the windows. too bad there's no effect when maximizing a window.

oops, stupid me. it's normal that it looks like vista, it's a beta version of windows vista. excuse my stupidness
but the paint stuff shown in the picture isn't the final paint at all.

How is it a beta of Vista if it's called "Windows 7 beta"?

SERIOUSLY

You do realize this post dug you deeper into the hole?... Right?...

Anyway, if you're going to argue that something is worth giving a chance in this build, I suggest you back it with some facts.
