Hi, well, a while ago I finally switched from CRT to LCD. Upon doing so, I found my LCD monitor insanely bright, so I turned the contrast waaaay down. However, my eyes began aching a while ago. I did everything possible: moving it back, changing lightning, what have you.

While I now have rather good reading vision (Seems almost like 15/15 15/20 20/15 (Evil Vision things)), I'm unsure if it was the CRT monitor which harmed my vision or if the LCD is harming it now. My vision seemed to become much sharper after using the LCD for a while, too..

Maybe you just need some sleep...

I've never had that problem with LCD monitors.

I sleep, on average, about 10 to 12 hours.

And sometimes it hurts when I wake up, too. So it isn't really that... (in fact, I don't notice it often until after I go off the computer)

Unless you had a really good CRT and/or a really crappy LCD, I'd guess it's the CRT's fault. When I made the switch it was like holy crap I can see. Could be that you have the brightness too high or too low, or a low refresh rate, or too high a resolution for the size of the screen.

Refresh rate is fine (70 Hz at 1360 by 768--even I am confused how I made that work)
I think it's the brightness, possibly. I've fiddled with it, but the acceptable contrast for me usually blurs stuff a little too much.

hmm, was the scan rate off (seems like screen is shaking a very slight bit?)

Give it some time. When I started using LCD monitors, I had a hard time trying to adjust to them. Now (about a year later), I can't stand looking at CRT monitors. YMMV.

CRTs, the good ones, are better than LCD anyway, save for their power consumption.

For one, CRTs can display black. LCDs can't.

I can't really say if I have a good CRT, but using both at the same time, you see differences.

And CRT's are great for low resolutions.

LCDs have a giant advantage due to the amount of space they don't take up.

And LCDs *CAN* display black, if your contrast ratio is good. The average I think is 800:1, but my screen has 1400:1. Black is black, white is bright white.

Stick with a Korean brand, like LG, when choosing anything LCD-related, because Korea has the best LCD technology at the moment (last I checked, anyway...).

So I just got an LCD monitor today.

I've noticed a few things about it. Like, it's bright enough so I don't have to use hardware gamma adjustment. And it has a perfectly clear picture on resolutions above 800 by 600. (These comparisons are based on my previous CRT.)

It may be cheap by some standards, but the response time is better than some I've seen, and the contrast ratio (450:1) is good enough for me, since now I can see the difference between dark colors.

Metal_Man: When I auto-adjusted it, I had a 4-pixel checkerboard pattern (white top left and bottom right, the other two black) set as my background. The effect was like TV static before adjusting. After, I could see individual white and black pixels. Try that pattern on your LCD monitor, it may need adjusting.

Also: ClearType looks nice.

Also also: I just noticed some light dots on my screen. They're less than half the size of a pixel, too, so they're not stuck pixels. Any ideas?

Considering a single pixel is made of three different sub-pixels (red, green, and blue), if one of those is dead/stuck, then of course it's going to be less than half the size of a pixel...1/3 to be exact.

Anyway, if it's already got more than one bad pixel, you should definitely exchange it. What brand/model is it, just out of curiosity?

The light spots are only visible on a dark background, and when I take off my glasses and look closer, the dots are a lot smaller than I thought, and they look like they're between pixels.

It's a 17-inch Gem monitor, model GM-170B. I got it used, so I can't exchange it.

You can unstick stuck pixels.

You need a program that will flash red, green, blue, white, black (for example) on your whole screen, really really really fast, and you leave it running for a few hours. Don't forget to turn off your screen saver when you do this.

This sometimes works. My old DS had a stuck pixel (stuck to cyan), and at some point in time, it changed to green, so the blue got unstuck at some point.

So... possibly not permanently stuck.

I don't think they're stuck pixels. The spots are between pixels, very small in comparison to pixels, and way too dark. They completely disappear on any color lighter than the purple in these tables. From what I've seen, stuck pixels are typically the lightest shade of red, green, blue, or a combination of those, and visible from more than 2 feet away. However, the spots fit none of these descriptions.

And I have seen stuck pixels before, so I know exactly what they look like. (School computers.)
On the topic of school computers, I can say confidently that I could do a better job of managing them. Fuzzy displays are caused by cheap video cables, and very annoying, so I use a high quality shielded cable for my monitor. Slow computers are a direct result of too much software crap, so I install only what I need to make my computer work, and no more. A laptop dying after 5 minutes running is caused by a dead cooling fan, not viruses (which appearently nobody was able to figure out) so I now have said laptop. I could go on and on.

In more news, after a while of using the LCD I have become accustomed to its sharpness. I am slowly adapting to the high contrast--it also appears to have cleaned up my own vision, which had begun to blur a little to match my CRT screen before. Ick.

Now I just have to slowly introduce higher and higher contrast to my eyes so they can get used to it.
