Simplicity v1.1
You're probably going to be getting crashes right about now if you liberally use MSN. Seems there's been a security update of sorts that doesn't allow it to run right.

So now, after a freaking long time, they're releasing a new version (3.1.7.0).

Nothing more than that, just thought I'd let you know. And to those of you who have Pro like me...my sympathies. :\

Odd, I'm not getting any crashes... do you actually have to do something besides sign in?

MSN plugin has to be enabled and running. Upon trying to login, it'll crash.

I mean as in actaully doing something e.g. sending a message.

I'm already online and often are, mostly because I liked to keep methods of contact open and some people only use MSN.

MSN does this occasionally. It's interesting, because often they claim it's an important security update involving big changes to the protocol, which makes the upgrade absolutely necessary, and yet really old versions keep working just fine.

I somehow suspect they find the small things the main non-MS protocol handlers don't handle, make sure that the current versions of the main MS program handle it fine, and then add it in to break third party implementations.

Nothing special, really, and completely understandable.

Try using pidgin for a multiprotocol client (it's what was formerly known as "gaim"). It doesn't lag my computer to high heaven and slap me around with stupid text and/or flash ads like the official clients do.

I don't think Pidgin supports direct connect in AIM yet, and I don't like the interface of it either... I tried Gaim a while ago but it just annoyed me more than anything.

The interface in pidgin is a bit better than it was in gaim, but Direct Connect is still a major WIP. Apparently it works better now, but for some reason it still crashes for me at random. Maybe if it was between two pidgin users?

I don't use Direct Connect much, really. If small images need to be shared, use ImageShack. If files need to be shared, send the file. (File transfers work great) If you want to do voice recording, use Google Talk or Skype, they're superior.

The problem is not doing it yourself, it is getting others to do it this way.

Direct connect has generally been working for me every time someone tries it with me.

... Could just be a fluke.

In my experiences, Gaim/Pidgin is pretty crappy (ugly interface, lack of features, etc), but Trillian is rendered completely unusable by bugs.

The case I'm thinking of in particular, even the current versions of the official client wouldn't work anymore (only the absolute latest), but for some reason very old versions still did. The obvious reason for this is that after a few versions they started having the clients check for some flag that says "pretend to be unable to connect if you're less than version soandso", and the older versions (which don't check for this) keep working because the change wasn't actually breaking at all; they just made that up to force everyone to upgrade. However, another possibility is that the change breaks a feature that those versions don't have. With MS, you never know for sure.

For the interface, it's not that bad. Hopefully you selected the "Windows Look-and-Feel" option for a skin, so that GTK+ uses whatever you have for Visual Styles when drawing things.
For the lack of features, it's because they want people to make plugins (in Python or Perl, IIRC) to add in said features. It ships with a bunch of plugins, but by default they are all turned off. Even the useful ones =/

Aside from the DC issue (never works with me), Pidgin is very good and I've gotten used to it. Fix that and I'm good to go.

It's still better than having multiple IM apps open for no real reason. :\
