So, I work as a stock clerk in a state-wide grocery store chain. As a stock clerk, I'm usually stuck walking around (although I should be taking breaks when necessary asdfasgasdg) checking crap on the aisles and generally working the floor (as well as collecting buggies outside, joy.)

Now, my manager is nice and all. Since she'll often send some of us home whenever there's nothing happening at the store, or allowing us to leave early should most of the floor has been worked (aisle-blocking, dust/regular mopping and other mundane tasks.) And, just as I was ready to go... a shop-back comes in!

A "shop back" is just where a customer cannot afford to purchase the groceries. As a result, they leave empty-handed, and a stocker has to return everything to the shelves. Luckily I have a good portion of the store memorized, so this isn't a problem.

Oh joy...

Force people to return products to the shelves they came from if they can't afford or don't want it.

PROBLEM SOLVED

As long as money's not a concern, I'd ask if you could do the job I just got.

That.

As in build it.

Now that we're back and money IS a concern, you'll make significantly more money doing jobs that make you want to pull your hair out (unless you're lucky enough to land a laid back job).

You ever think the customer has places to go?

Why the hell are they shopping if they can't afford it anyways?

At least someone didn't try to return an apple because they were dissatisfied with it.

A shop-back... Never heard that term. Anyway, a "shop-back" shouldn't be shopping if they can't keep track of how much money they have with them. It's common sense to know how much money you have...

At least you didn't have a hard time returning the items.

More importantly, you think they actually will?

It took maybe five to ten minutes tops for me to return it, there's twelve aisles in the store, and it isn't a very big store, either.

Oh it's a consistent thing...that's what sucks about stock positions. People aren't really wise spenders and probably will never be as such or will continue to get worse.

I remember working at Kohl's. It was nearly an everyday thing for someone to either walk in, get what they wanted and then either turn around and not want something, all of it, or not have money. People are dumb.

I never got what was so hard about it:

START-

- I want
- - Mountain Dew
- - Disc cases
- They cost
- - $7, $17 (arbitrary number alert
- I have
- - $48
- Conclusions
- - I have enough
- - I do not need anything else right now

-END

It's such an amazingly basic concept.

Just with the number 48% prepended to it.

See: exception 'not enough money in checking/debit account and not knowing that you went on a 1000 dollar shopping spree or paid bills or didn't care to remember that you got that extra tank of gas or identity theft'

And that is why I try to keep a minimum of $20 for anything I really need immediately without needing to worry if my bank account can handle it.

Keeping onhand cash always made more sense to me. The only real downside is the ease of which it, uh, vanishes. Hi theft.

When I was a bagger at Martin's, I had to deal with those occasionally. It was, thankfully, very rare. Except, instead of 12 aisles, we had 22, and a pretty large deli, bakery, and produce department.

Well, you guys convinced me never to work at a store because of all the morons that can wreck it with just the little things.

But then again. I doubt I could ever get a job anywhere else as I can't take too much physical labor.

What's a guy to do...

The morons are everywhere. You just hear about them more from retail because that's where a lot of people work and personally deal with the idiots. Same for food service.

Car wash attendant is no thrill ride either. 99% of it is sitting at the counter doing absolutely nothing. If I could use my laptop or play video games during this nothing, it'd be just fine, but no.

Also, I use a simple system to make sure I have enough money for whatever I'm buying. All my money is in one bank account, but I treat it as being two separate accounts - one for spending and one for saving. I track all deposits and withdrawals to each in a spreadsheet, and split all income 50/50 between them. So even though my general-purpose account is empty, the actual bank account still has plenty in it. I obviously try to avoid spending the rest of it; it essentially provides overdraft protection at no cost. (And I get interest on the total amount, not on two smaller amounts. )

I get that all the time in my store. Even when they're buying something. We try to keep the store alphabetized, but its like people can't understand that. And don't get me started on the parents who don't even watch their kids in the store...move accessories around, pulling instruction booklets out of the case and unto the floor.....

I've seen more idiots working at fast food outlets here, some of them giving you the wrong meal, or giving you the wrong amount of change ( I got #10 from a 5 pound note back once ) or they go and get your meal, 5 minutes later, come back and say "what did you ask for"

And I've seen a shop back at the shop I work at (summer jobs = ugh) and he tried to run away with the stuff.. which was like, 5 bags of food

I love it when customers, kids and grown-ups alike, hand you their money all crumbled up and without counting it. Most times, they'll hand you too much without knowing it and if their a real dick, they'll never know it. I mean, come on, why wouldn't you not count your money before handing it over?
