I think I know what you mean.

Like in the start menu in Vista, the button with the power icon hibernates the computer, and the program list is stuck in the menu. (Notice how both of those are different in Windows 7.)

As much as I dislike Apple, I have to give them some credit for sticking with a familiar interface for so long, instead of trying to reinvent the wheel every other release. The learning curve between XP and 7 is probably huge.

Actually, what I was going to suggest is that MS really is starting to copy some of what Apple does. Just look at the taskbar: it reminds me (although barely) of the way the Mac OS X handles open applications, but not open windows. e.g., each application has just one instance in the dock but can have many windows open.

One of my biggest complaints about Vista (and the default XP skin) is that the OS takes up so much screen space. It's very distracting. I don't use my computer to ogle gigantic shiny buttons and transparent glass windows (or, as MS calls it, the "user experience"), I use it to do stuff. When the "user experience" starts distracting me, or otherwise interfering with my ability to do said stuff, there's a problem.

I can tell you, as an expert that's done this before, that running Windows 3.1 on a dual-core 2.2GHz processor is very fast.

Actually, it's more like an overzealous "Grouping" mechanism, which was in XP.

I just turned it off because I hate grouping.

Also, am I the only one who thought "Joy, another fucking ribbon" when I saw that?

Yeah, the first thing I do is turn that nonsense off.

Also, M$ loves to mimic Apple. That way, they steal their ideas without needing to make their own, and look revolutionary when they aren't. Everything since Windows 3.1, in fact, has been in a way stealing from Apple.

Although DOS was also stolen, and so was the mouse... etc etc. Truthfully, Microsoft doesn't deserve the credit they like to claim.

I can at least list a few things even MacOS 7.0 had (around the time Windows 3.1 came out) that Windows introduced with 95 or later:

- Apple menu -> Start menu (at least the "Programs" part of it)
- Trash -> Recycle Bin
- Aliases -> Shortcuts
- Desktop
- 8bit color icons (not until Windows 98, or 95 with a tweak)
- Custom icon for any specific file or folder, labels coloring them (might not be in Windows yet, but who knows if they add it one day and call it revolutionary)

For the things Windows had first or did better, I wouldn't know how much was stolen from others ...

And yeah, I also see higher desktop resolutions as more space to fit stuff, not a higher definition ... so even in 1920x1200+1280x1024, I still like to keep things small and compact, with minimal toolbars, small fonts, 16x16 icons, thin scrollbars and so on

Good, so I made the right call with not upgrading.

I think you can tell MS is going for the safe approach by just calling the OS Windows 7 (for now) since they sure as hell can't call it Vista 2.0. I didn't upgrade because of the various problems and due to the system requirements... I could run it, sure, but some games have higher requirements in Vista as opposed to XP... there's a game coming out which I can run comfortably in XP, but I'm struggling to meet the Vista requirements and I'm sure that would damper the performance. :\

Windows 7 sounds like it'll be a good time for me to upgrade my PC, if not sooner.
