Well, it all started when I found a post on Gfaqs about "differences" from the original and VC versions of SMRPG. I was surprised to hear this and then I noticed two images showing two main differences.

This and this.

So naturally, I showed this to everyone who also became as intrigued as I was. So we grabbed the WAD file and after an hour of Acmlm magically unlzing, we got a working ROM of the VC version.

Now we were surprised to find that the ROM been edited a bit more than we expected.

Differences here. (Those are offsets BTW)

Also, the comparison program is kinda funny, so to clear up any possible confusion about the Inserted/Deleted...

(Deleted) 0xFFF00-0xFFF17 (A string not found in the original) <- VC ROM ONLY
(Inserted) 0xFFFE8-0xFFFFF (instead of that string we find in the VC ROM, we've got this long string of 0s in the original instead) <- ORIGINAL ROM ONLY

Much of the changes are either random strings or large hunks of graphics or sound data.

The sound data is completely altered so it streams from a .PCM file. There are a few instances where the graphics are altered as well...

At 0x226D16 - Bugger! was changed to Pest! so Europeans wouldn't be offended...

I didn't dig too deep, but I'm sure there are a few more notable changes within the ROM that I have not seen.

I am a big Mario RPG fan. this is very odd. I have also noticed that some of the enemies attacks Graphics are a little more sloppy than the original. would you call all this a Bad thing?

I'm gonna say, seeing as the sprites should be exactly the same as the original, that it's just you.
I mean, other than the few transparency and colour issues, it's a rom of the original.

Well yeah..... anyway. if you spot anymore. post the screen shots. I love these kind of things.
it's pretty funny. I was afraid that Mario RPG (VC) would freeze due to the fact that all the Mario RPG Roms I've ever tried would hang up on certain spots.

Nintendo specifically designs their emulators on a "per-game" basis. Sooo... No hanging...

Nintendo is probably still in damage control mode from that "Electric Soldier Porygon" incident, and thus isn't taking any chances when it comes to bright, flashy things. It doesn't mean they have to totally kill those effects, though...that's just being overly paranoid.

Now I wanna go watch the Japanese Pokemon.

As for differences, I don't find the things they changed to be that bad. A graphics problem is that sometimes layers are misplaced in a few battles. On certain enemies like the big spider like thing, when they attack some layers move around, like a part of Mallow will be over the enemy, another won't...
