According to Science™, the appendix actually has a purpose in the immune system. Also according to Science™, we don't use it all that often because of modern* healthcare.

*I suppose "modern" is the wrong term, since that seems to refer to the United States healthcare system. I just haven't thought of a catch-all for "tested and working system not funded by drug companies more interested in profit than your well-being". Perhaps "sane" would be acceptable?
