I never saw how it was so hard to create something nice, I mean even my little site took almost no effort and I'm told on a somewhat often basis how good it looks

Yeah, it should be immediately obvious when something is terribly ugly. Although sometimes it looks good on some systems, and lousy on others. (Really, this looks just fine to me, probably because I have a nice LCD monitor. )

I have a superbright LCD screen on my laptop, and it was almost unreadable.
