Wow, Nintendo's busy tonight! Why wasn't it like this at E3? Highlights:

- Nintendo officially announced the rumored new DS version, called the Nintendo DSi. GBA slot's gone, but in its place is a slightly larger screen, audio modifications, a .3 megapixel camera and a SD memory card slot. Wait... why a SD slot? So you can put pictures on there, of course... and there also seems to be a web browser, and DSiWare. Yes, the DS version of WiiWare, and hopefully Wii Points and DSi Points are exchangeable. Pricing for the DSi games range from nada to 800 points, and everyone who buys a DSi gets 1000 points for free. Release date: 11/1 in Japan, sometime early next year worldwide. About $179.
- Some neat DS games, including Mario and Luigi 3 and some sort of 3D Picross (!) game.
- Starting in the spring, Wii owners can put their SD cards to good use as well; Nintendo will finally allow you to copy VC/WiiWare games onto a SD card and play them. ABOUT TIME.
- GameCube games are going to be re-released on Wii as some sort of Greatest Hits thing. Pikmin's the first to be released, it looks like.
- Also, there's new Wii games coming, duh. Among the highlights... Sangoku Musou 3 (yes, the Dynasty Warriors series), Sin and Punishment 2 (!!!) and Punch-Out (!!!!!). Bunch of other stuff too... check here.

Not so bad, huh?

I wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole.

This isn't like the GB -> GBC thing.

With the GBC, it was a huge upgrade. From 4 colors (FOUR!) to hundreds, with a faster processor, better battery life, and everything.

The GBA SP introduced a better form, backlight, and more.

The DS Light had a better form and a nicer backlight, but not much else.

The DSi...? A point-3 mexapixel camera?? No GBA slot??? No improvement in speed or RAM?????

I used to be a pretty avid Nintendo fan, but the PSP... it just does it so much better.

The only thing that's keeping me on the DS right now is gaming, and from the way it looks right now, that won't last long. Ever seen store shelves? BABIEZ FROM IMAJINE! Oh, and fucktons of shovelware, too.

Where did Nintendo go?

You guys forgot to mention that the DSi's top screen is now touch compatible. That means that the DS and DS-lite won't be able to play any DSi games that use both touch screens.

I'm all for marketing strategies but that's just mean.

Huh. So, it seems that there may have been miscommunication along the lines, and dual touch screens might not be happening. We'll see how things work out, but it doesn't seem that way. The only proof we have at the moment is one picture of the media player touching the top screen, or so we think.

Edit:
"Well IGN just removed the quote about two touch screens so looks like there's still only one."

Punchout and Another Code looked fantastic.

For me, the DSi feels like GBA Micro - You'll buy it, if you want some extra stuff, but it's not required. Hopefully they won't make games only for DSi, well, except the DSiWare.

More than anything, DSi and the Wii versions of GC games just screams huge milking strategy.
Do not want.

I have to agree with Glitschen...why are they doing this ._. the DSi is like the Gameboy micro, only pointless and with failing attempts to be like the PSP. The Wii version of GC games is also kind of ridiculous...since you can play GC games. So...why not just keep selling those? Or re-sell whatever. Super dumb. You know it's just going to be the GC game burned on a Wii disk anyway...and if it isn't, then god help us when they bust out the GC emulator (and they WOULD emulate a system they natively support, I absolutely would not put it past them)

I love Nintendo. I idolize their designers. But lately...I just have to question some of their business decisions ._.

That was my first impression, too. Don't most companies wait at least a decade or two before they start doing the shovelware thing with older titles? Besides, the Wii still plays original GC games (it is a GC, just with added waggle), which you can still find in most game stores! Gasp!

As for the iPhone DSi...no. Just no. It does nothing my original DS + M3 Perfect can't do, aside from taking pictures. And I already have a (much better) camera for that.

After all the rampant innovation of the past few years, I get the feeling Nintendo's just...running out of steam. Either that, or they've become so wildly profitable that they just don't care anymore. Maybe both.

Yep, that's exactly right. They want to make more money, so they want to target the casual people. The casual people are dumbfounded with the current DS system. Most don't even know that it can play GBA games until I tell them. And this is after they've had the system for a while. They look at me, shocked, and say, "so that's what that extra slot is for!" OMFG!!!! So Nintendo is going to take that feature out and add more "casual" things to it.

Tsk tsk...

Nintendo better get on the ball with their portables. The PSP-3000 series are due out this month.

And they look a lot better than the upgrades to this.

I have to say I'm seriously considering the PSP-3000 once homebrew can run on it. I wouldn't be able to live without my GBS/MOD/etc. and emulators

Not only that, but the PSP's price point is $170 for the core system.

A lot of the reasoning behind the DS was that it was cheaper and had better games. So... now what?

Oops.

Really though, Nintendo has always tried since it's inception to capture the casual audience. I don't know about anyone else, but it feels like Nintendo's doing the same thing it always has - they just have the technology to better do what they always wanted to now.

The only thing that looks bad about this is that it can't play GBA games...

And the only thing that looked bad about the Nintendo DS was that it couldn't play Gameboy/Gameboy Color games...

I mean come on! Just because the Nintendo DS isn't a gameboy...

Good thing I have a GBA SP/flashcart in the back of my closet. And at least the NDS emulator fo GB games is good.

I'll just wait and see what happens before I decide if I want to buy this or not.

Edit: Mario and Luigi series has my money, no question. Also, Wii and DSi remakes of Gamecube games? Is this the replacement of remaking snes games on the GBA and N64 games on the DS?

Damn you Nintendo... D:
Well, maybe with SD card support, someone will create a homebrew GBA emulator :/ If the old methods even work with the DSi, looks like an entirely new interface.

(cut for space)

Where did Nintendo go?

You're talking about the company that, in the days of colored, backlit screens and networking (albeit wired at the time) released a system that had four colors, all of which can be described as "green".

They then re-released said system in a smaller package with the revolutionary feature of a screen that actually allowed for gray instead of green. Still no backlighting, though.

The GBA was released with the single worst screen on a handheld I've ever seen; in order to tell what's on it, you literally had to have either full sunlight (sunset/sunrise wouldn't work, and in fact would make it impossible to play without heavy curtains) or no background light at all besides one being shone on the screen at a proper angle.

The GB Micro was just a GBA made smaller with no GB support (and maybe a better screen? never compared it to an SP).

So you tell me. Where have they gone?

Also, considering that the Gamecube is out of production, there's no difference in their eyes between releasing Wii versions of GCN games and re-releasing the GCN one. If it's still priced the same, what does it matter?

Besides, plenty of people don't have the Gamecube one, and I think they'd prefer getting one that doesn't require them to also drop money on a memory card. Or Gamecube controllers, if they don't have any. Those things are $25 a piece, if you've forgotten.

It was released in 1989... I don't know what wired networking has to do with it, but okay.

As for the screen, it's been known exactly what the reason was; better battery life. Things like the Game Gear (1990) decided to say fuck that and implemented a backlight and color screen.

...and the system lasted for a few hours on six (!!!) batteries.

There were usually some bright ideas behind the reasoning for what they did (although the GBA's screen did suck), but this just seems downright stupid.
