Yes, friends, it's been many years since South Florida Entertainment Attorney Jack Thompson started his "Holy Crusade" against the medium of video games, using whatever asinine or slanderous reasons to try and forward his arguments. In more recent times, his motions became more and more ludicrous, turning almost whatever trial he was involved in, or attempted to be involved in, into what many described as, "a legal circus." From name calling, interrupting the judge during formal procedures, to even submitting pornographic evidence into the court record in the Miami-Dade County Legal System, Mr. Thompson has given the gaming media quite a bit of a stir.
But that is no more.
Today, the Florida Bar has formally ruled that Jack Thompson is unfit to continue practicing law in the State of Florida and has ruled to disbar him permanently.
Originally posted by Official Ruling The Court approves the corrected referee's report and John Bruce Thompson is permanently disbarred, effective thirty days from the date of this order so that respondent can close out his practice and protect the interests of existing clients. If respondent notifies the Court in writing that he is no longer practicing and does not need the thirty days to protect existing clients, this Court will enter an order making the permanent disbarment effective immediately. Respondent shall accept no new business from the date this order is filed.
On top of this, Thompson has to pay the Florida Bar a total of $43,675.35. Naturally, Thompson has the opportunity to appeal the maneuver, and already has, but the courts will not even honor the appeal unless it's filed by another lawyer in good standing with the Florida Bar. It's unlikely this will happen due to the reputation Thompson has made for himself, which will cause those same attorneys to shy away from the issue to protect their names.
Thompson has already fired a release immediately after the news broke. In it, he calls the move a perversion of justice and calls the actions of the Court a retaliatory attack to Thompson's book, Out of Harm's Way. His press release also hypothesizes as to why the Court field the motion so quickly.
The timing of this disbarment transparently reveals its motivation: This past Friday Thompson filed a federal civil rights action against The Bar, the Supreme Court, and all seven of its Justices. This rush to disbarment is in retribution for the filing of that federal suit. With enemies this foolish, Thompson needs only the loyal friends he has.
Thompson wrapped up his release by stating, "...this should be fun, starting now."
