Super Metroid: Volta

Let me start off with a screenshot montage of the planet, Volta.

Welcome to Gaia Heights, The Dual-Summit Mountain.

The outer caverns of Volta awaken.

Looks like this tunnel caved in...

High in the sky, Rippers guard their passages using their speed. Too bad Samus is faster.

Secrets are abound in Volta.

These ruin remnants are scattered around Gaia Heights, testament to a long lost civilization.

The mirror-still lakes of Cyclonia are a beautiful contrast to the dark caverns connecting the outdoors.

Inside the darkness, flying creatures abound, preying on anything foolish enough to come their way.

The Kago is a natural barrier, strong enough to repel all but a charged attack.

The caves here may be deadly, but they also hold many a treasure to be uncovered, as well as secrets of their own.

So close, yet so far away.
(I know that in the last shot, I have Supers, Varia, etc., but you won't have much at all the first time you come through here.)

As for a storyline, I have none yet. I'm debating whether or not the game really needs one.

I have no trailer, no release date, nothing, and I'm working at my own pace, which is probably a little slow compared to most. I won't make any predictions because even I don't know when this may come out. it's done when it's done and that's that.

Feel free to comment, discuss, make suggestions, whatever. I'll read all the comments. In fact, I love getting feedback on my projects so feel free to make as many as you want, barring getting too off-topic.

I've got a couple more screens since then and made lots more progress:

And the last screen:

What could this be?

So I'm working on this really enthusiastically when I get the time. As of now, I've return to Gaia Heights (Crateria) to do some more of the rooms in there. Once I get a new tileset, I can begin work on the Norfair-like area, and once I hear back from another person modifying an existing tileset of theirs as per my request, I'll be able to tackle another area in the western half of Cyclonia.

I've set up some progress meters at the bottom of my post so you can keep track of my progress as I work.

Lastly, there's a slightly outdated beta from a couple weeks ago if you're interested. It's for a headered Super Metroid (JU) [!] rom, meaning 3073 KB. You can click this link to download it:
http://forum.metroid2002.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7573.0;attach=5709

Not much else to say. I'll update this thread as I make progress. You'll get new screens every once in a while as well.

Hope I've gotten a couple of you interested in my project and thank you.

Progress meters:

Gaia Heights: ~50% -- Map finished
Cyclonia: 33% -- Map finished
Therma: 0%
Aquatic Rift: 0%
Fifth Area (Name withheld): 0%
Final Boss area (Name withheld): ~50% -- Map finished

Current Bug Count: 0 -- Bug free for at least 5 days!

Looks pretty darn fun to me. Design is nice, look is nice. Are you hacking anything other than world layout? Like new physics, moves, or objects? How would you rate the difficulty compared to the original? Planning on requiring any of those crazy morphball/Speed Boot moves? (Hope not for the only move I can do reliably is wall jumping)

If you can't think of a good storyline, don't bang your head about it too much. Pretty much all but the most unique storylines take a backseat to awesome gameplay that is Super Metroid. Although, I am curious as to how you came up with those area names. Are they referencing something? I bet they are and I'm totally clueless to it. :p

Keep up the good work. Its a great feeling when your actually enthused in your project. I haven't felt like even looking inside my romhacking folder in 2 years+

AlexAR: I've got a few public ASM hacks in place right now, looking to implement the no damage shinespark patch soon. I'm not planning any physics changes either. As for difficulty, I'm trying to keep it close to the original, slightly harder. With so many hard hacks these days, it's nice to have one that's based on your skills of exploration. Going along with that philosophy, the walljumping is not even required to beat the game. I have plenty of platforms to jump on. That said, walljumping will help sometimes simply because it's faster to skip platforms sometimes. The hardest skills you'll need to know how to do are mid-air morphing and shinespark.
As for the area names, they're basically just me coming up with names. Though since Gaia means "earth", so it fits a mountain range. The rest are just names, though you can guess what Aquatic Rift will be like.

My philosophy for this game, and coincidentally, the story, is, "What if Super Metroid took place on a different planet?" And that's exactly what this game will be. It's to be an alternate to Super Metroid. Storyline is the same, but the game is on a different world. I've had a few weeks since that post to think of a story.
