I can't get this stupid laptop on my wireless network. I feel like I've tried everything, but my best guess is that I am missing one little detail.

The network security type is Higher Security (WPA / WPA2).
It requires a password and has a SSID.
It is a linksys router.

The PC isn't wireless but the XB360 and Wii are and they work just fine.

Not sure if this information will be helpful..

I can see the wireless network on my lappy. When I click on it to connect I get this message: Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer in rage. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again.

It never asks to put in a password, it just goes straight to that pop up when I try to connect. There is no way that I am out of range since it's in the same room, less than 4 feet apart.

This lappy has worked on a wireless network before just not this one. Could it be that its just too old to work on this network?

Its a Vaio laptop.

Any suggestions?

So I'm online on the lappy at my father-in-laws, so I know that the lappy can go online on a wireless connection.

He told me to check which channel the wireless router is on...didn't think they had channels.

You need to see if there's a way to input a password -- how old is it?

If it's too old, there's a decent chance it doesn't support WPA.

The router and the lappy are both backwards compatable so it should be working...

Well, in that case you might have to enter it manually if you can. I haven't used the Windows zero-configuration tool in a long time, so I wouldn't really know much abuot the internals.

Maybe the message is wrong, and the network is still in rage.

Of course it's still in range.

Now I am at the point where the message doesn't show up anymore, but I still can't get it to go online. It was late at night when I started to work on it, so many if I have a chance later I'll give it another go.

She made a typo. Get back on topic or shut up.

Hm, if you're using WPA/WPA2, try the -PSK variants, because if memory served -PSK is Pre-Shared Key, whereas WPA might have done it differently. If that doesn't work either, is WEP an option?
