I miss the sounds of dial-up, though. You know, those beeps and other sounds when connecting. Could be just me though.

Ah yes, 56k. The sounds were awesome, but waiting for flash games to load, that sucked :x

I used to watch Homestar Runner on dial-up.

Best 5 minutes waiting for something to load each time.

Aggh, maybe I just had a bad modem, but when we had dial-up, the sounds were like shards of glass piercing my eardrum. Also, I had AOL, and near when we switched to dsl, the connection started dying after five minutes of use. Bleah.

So I was on the AOL homepage...

Seriously, I can't remember NOT surfing the internet on DSL...
Mostly it was me watching my dad years ago

All I did was play internet games back then. I was past Dial-Up when I started browsing forums years ago.

The signature and the useless header text are staying.

I remember that I had the dreamcast internet... It used dial-up I think...

I didn't do much on it anyways. Downloaded some kart thing for sonic adventure 2 or whatever.

The next one wasn't dial-up, but it wasn't dsl either... I don't really remember...

Well, apparently Windows fails at running DOS programs on a multi-CPU computer.

It managed to crash my monitor. (The backlight was on, the screen was black, and the power button didn't work.)

Sounds like a graphics card problem.

My desktop back home does that occasionally, but at least ATI drivers come with that GPU reset feature so the screen just kinda freaks out for a few moments, goes black, then fixes itself.

(Goddamned VisionTek graphics cards. Never had that problem with anything else...)

Yeah, except DOSBox emulates the PC speaker, which completely defeats the purpose of trying out a program designed to play music on the PC speaker.

You may be right about the graphics card, since this doesn't happen to a DOS program that doesn't try to change graphics mode.

I wonder if it would do that running with only one CPU... To the BatmobileBIOS! Edit: I guess not... Go Go Gadget Oil SlickDriver Update!

DOSBox's PC speaker emulation is a bit off. I think it outputs an "ideal" tone, rather than the sometimes gritty sound the real thing makes (a lot of old NES emulators had the same problem). It's most apparent in games that use a lot of low tones, like Duke Nukem.

Depends.

Did you have a run-of-the-mill one or did you have the asskicking 286 behemoth of a blarer?

I remember my 286 blaring when it came to Scorched Earth. No comp could take its PC speaker on. That was the only thing a Packard Bell was good for.

We have family at my house right, and I wouldn't mind if they just left me alone, but the teenager of about my age is adamant about getting me to hang out with him, both him and his little brother swear a lot and their mother smokes (sorry to the smokers here, but I just hate it). I always have the feeling than one of them is going to break something...

Yet my parents insist on me coming out of the room to talk with them and just sit down and do nothing.

Still, they're only here for a day and conversation wasn't bad during lunch, but I'll still have to deal with my brother's friends tomorrow while they works on projects run around and play with my stuff.

Hey, this is like my parents!

Except I literally live in the middle of nowhere so I'd have nothing to do anyway.

"Come out here and watch TV!"...

I still laugh at how little sense that makes. Yes, let's forget about doing something (converse, learn, program, whatever) and go sit in front of a television that does not provide us with anything except today's latest infotainment/whatever. Brilliant logic, genius.

Parents are almost universally dumb.

That is what my mom wants me to do.

And then she says I do nothing in my room...

Parents are sometimes annoying too... Especially when you're in the middle of something.
