Oddly, Google just extended its deal with Mozilla until 2011, and now they're making a competitor to Firefox?

That's what I was saying when I heard about this yesterday. It's pretty much part-in-part, hand-in-hand of this. The emergence of this really doesn't surprise me.

The comic was a pretty good read. Not too many people can make a technical press release entertaining. They've got a lot of subtle references in there, and some things that are just plain funny.

While it's dead obvious Google is trying to be influential with this one, it's kinda hard to compete with something when neither side has a customer base. All Google's saying is "We're real great! Use our stuff!" I don't see how anyone can hold that against them. It's basically the same renderer for both products, just with a different skin.

I don't quite understand how to interperate this. It seems like a negative response, but I don't believe that a Google operating system would bring about the end of the world.

Actually, from what I've read it uses the WebKit rendering engine (like Apple's Safari) rather than the Gecko engine used by Firefox.

gOS already exists. The world is not over. Your interpretation fails.

Wait for SkyNet.

This is damn nifty. It seems to go quite nicely, as in fast.
As for gOS, that's not made by Google. It seems to be just Ubuntu with a theme and various Google apps.

I used it a bit, but I found myself crying out for a status bar at the bottom, I like to have separation between the taskbar and the browsing area, plus that blue thing was distracting... I realize that this is the definition of a petty irrelevant issue, but it bugged me a lot for some reason.

Suggest improvements! Look for work-arounds in the mean-time! Remember to...

Hang on...

"Chrome does not support this version of Windows"

XP Pro with SP1? Not supported? Noooooo thanks, Google. I'm not infecting my computer with SP2 or Vista, thanks. Guess your browser's just too good for me.

I'm actually enjoying it, despite the fact that I'm so dependent on using Opera's one key shortcuts (like pressing 1 or 2 will jump left or right a tab). Also, this thing is causing the computer at work to crash a whole lot less.. so I now get just one or two crashes a day instead of eight (I assume it's because this computer prefers to do more processing than having things in memory. Or something, I don't know)

Aside from the lack of one key shortcuts and... possibly two other things that I can no longer remember, I'm perfectly fine with this browser. I definitely don't mind seeing what Google Chrome will turn into.

As long as this is not yet another step towards Skynet.

SP2 and SP3 are infections? Vista I can understand, but...

There are certain things I enjoy about my computer that I am not willing to compromise.

For instance, when I attempt to use it, I don't need Windows looking out for my best interests and asking if I indeed really did mean to run that program. Or browse to that directory. Or use that network connection. Or copy that file from one domain to another. These are things that I intend to do purposefully, and do not appreciate the friendly warnings of how things might conceivably go south where I one of those unfortunate souls who didn't have that message box to pop up in the first place.

The Security Center is idiocy incarnate. It not only indicates that you were trying to do something, but flat-out rejects your motion and prevents you from getting it done. To disable these features is to instead bring up a balloon tip as a reminder that your computer is at serious risk because security features are disabled, and that clicking there will re-enable them for you. Thank you, Microsoft, for discouraging the use of my computer. Now I don't feel so bad about using a pirated volume license key to bypass the need for your utterly foolish Product Activation.

I cannot count the number of networking problems I've encountered due to the Security Center's supposed safeguards, such as denying ICMP requests like Ping or other such tomfoolery.

Wireless networks are becomming more and more common, and I still have specific wishes and uses for them. I am a fan of the unsecured, non-broadcasted wireless network. Sure, someone driving down the road could conceivably detect it and somehow gain access to it without the SSID, but I'm sure I would begin to suspect foul play when there's a guy with a laptop parked out in front of my house for hours on end, so I don't worry about it.

So someone comes over with SP2+ or Vista, and wishes to connect to my network. What's that, Windows, you will not display the network in the Wireless Networks control panel despite me giving you the SSID manually? You must prompt that the user does in fact wish to connect to the network--after manually clicking the Connect button--because it is unsecured and therefore theroetically possible to be of some sort of harm to the user's machine? Thank you once again, Microsoft, for inserting yourself between me and those whom I know and trust.

"But Guy," you may say, "you can disable those features!" This is true. Alternately, I can save system resources and hard disk usage by not installing them in the first place. In not doing so, I am saving myself from all the disadvantages of having someone looking out for me.

So to answer your question, Ykito: yes, SP2 and SP3 are infections.

Sucks for you, I guess. [runs SP3 and installs on all computers that go out just fine]

Yeah, what a trip that you can disable most of those features! Gasp!

Jesus Christ you're whiny. Turn the fucking shit off and be done with it.

If you're not going to install it, then shut up and quit bitching about how everything requires SP2 because GUESS FUCKING WHAT! 99.9999% of us have NO PROBLEM AT ALL WITH IT.

Delete wscntfy.dll and any related files in system32, then it won't bug you anymore (I disabled the whole Security Center too, but true, some parts of it might still be there wasting space)

I stayed away from SP2 myself at first, until a program I needed required it (then I got this computer that came with SP2 installed), but now it's really not bad ... although I'd understand not wanting to upgrade from a perfectly fine Windows 2000 or XP SP1 setup when there's no other need for it

As for Google Chrome, I went to give it a try since it looked interesting, but it didn't take long to run into problems:
- The installer didn't run at all (I had to search for another way to install)
- It installed to C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome, with no option to have it in Program Files or wherever I want (can't even move it)
- There doesn't seem to be a way to disable the spellchecker (at least half of the words in the reply box right now are underlined in red, from checking in the wrong language)
- Maximizing the window in a secondary screen (on a dual screen setup) doesn't work properly
- It doesn't like dark color schemes (or maybe they really wanted white on white?)
- Yep, looks real nice

Another fun thing to do, since it uses a separate process for each tab, try closing some of them from the task manager
