See here...

And yes, there's a country named Georgia...apparently they're warring right now (or about ready to).

US is calling for a cease-fire as well...

Hm, conflicts have been growing for awhile... a few years back I found a page on pravda.ru (Russian news site) that was talking about it, complete with a map of Georgia... (though the map was the US Georgia) A shame I no longer have the screenshot.

Well, if I'm not mistaken, haven't they been doing skirmishes with them for some time. At the same token, wasn't Georgia PART of Russia at some point?

I mean Russia has invaded now...so it makes me wonder if it was just a matter of time or something...but oil prices dropped sharply and some are attributing it to this incident. Said oil is at ~$116 now instead of $150 like it used to be a month ago.

Georgia was part of Russia from 1812 until 1917. Of course, it was also one of the social republics in the uSSR, but that's different than being part of Russia.

Even when you think it's done with a truce... it gets broken 12 hours later...

What's the one Obiwan line...I have a bad feeling about this?

I'm with Russia on this one. Even if only to let the world know that US isn't the only one who can make Iraqs out of small countries.
Also, I wouldn't trust any information that comes from Georgians. During those 6 days they've been lying a lot.

Yeah, I'm with Russia here too! Damn those countries that think they have "sovereignty" or anything! They need to be put in their place- if you were once part of the USSR, you need to just accept that you should be a Russian slave state forever! Irrelevant mention of the War in Iraq!

Yep, and of course with the US you're going to bring about the fact that we've done this and so we can't say anything about Russia v. Georgia anyways. Guess the next part is it's all our fault.

Actually, there's a (not entirely incorrect) argument that this is Bush's fault doesn't use the war in Iraq at all... From The Boston Globe

"The Bush administration did its part to prepare the ground for this summer's war in the Caucasus when it recognized the independence of Kosovo earlier this year without United Nations authorization, and against Moscow's wishes. The Kremlin warned at the time that Bush had established a principle in Kosovo that Russia might want to apply to South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Now Russia has, and Bush has left the United States little basis to protest."

The Kosovo situation is one I didn't think of in this case...

Wow...what a call for bullshit...

But hey apparently we've got to take that one up the ass as well...the whole thing's been nuts. I think I read the other day that it was supposedly Obama's call for cease fire for something he...really didn't have the initial idea for but was credited anyways.

On the same token, some conservative extremist bashed the hell out of him yesterday for 'being on vacation during a crisis' in Hawaii when he was supposedly visiting family (course he was golfing)...

Just has to be done during the election year right at the Olympic games. Too well-timed.

Russia also had an awesome excuse to join the conflict though. At least, better than (I bet this will become Godwyn's Act2 in 10 years) "lol they have WMDs in iraq. i say this based on i'm the world's biggest power and will blow the shit out of you if you disagree".

Isn't it the same with Iraq?

I don't see how irrelevant it is to my point, considering my point is based just on that: that the world needs to know that the US isn't the only country that can bully the small ones simply because they have power. After USSR died, US had lost its rival and is pretty much dominating (think of the UT voice saying that )), being world's police. I don't like that. Any country could be next. When you're part of the superpower who tries to fight the axis of evilâ„¢, you really can only dislike when your former defeated enemy starts to show off some power like your country does.

Not really, but if you say that it'll be kinda hypocrite.

I haven't studied the Georgia/Russia scenario enough to know whether or not the US is involved, nor do I plan to. If anyone is involved, it would be Russia for inciting a revolt, but again, this is just some random speculation without any proof to back it.

My point is, I don't care about Georgian or Russian or South Ossetian lives. I don't. I care about how this will affect the international affairs all around the world. It'd be great to not live in a world where the only super power is also the one making dozens of vietnams out of small countries.

I opposed the invasion of Iraq, though So it's kind of hard to argue that's different. (but it is- the Russian invasion is probably better justified)

I somehow entirely forgot about the Kosovo situation, which is essentially the same thing but from the opposite perspective. And indeed, the South Ossetians don't want to be part of Georgia, and there are some evidences of Georgian atrocities in South Ossetia and Abkhazia... gah, now I'm conflicted again, damnit.

I'm watching a Fox News special right now called Russia: The Angry Giant, and I don't know if this is Fox News only, but the western propaganda is enormous. They even compared Russia to Nazi Germany, and said Russia investing in military is a bad thing (lol iraq again). The hypocrisy is astonishing.

Like Hiryuu said, Fox is a propaganda outlet. That and they really have no idea what the hell they're talking about half the time.
